No. 495 - June 2016 President: Vice President: Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace Nothing like a Dame (make that two!) The VW’s Shakespeare party this year marked Shakespeare’s 452nd birthday as well as the 400th anniversary of his death. The party was a great success and while London, Stratford and many major cultural institutions went, in my view, a bit over-bard (sorry!), the VW’s party was graced by the presence of two Dames - Joan Plowright and Eileen Atkins, two star Shakespeare performers very much associated with the Old Vic. The party was held in the Old Vic rehearsal room where so many greats – from Ninette de Valois to Laurence Olivier – would have rehearsed. Our wonderful Vice-President, Nickolas Grace, introduced our star guests by talking about their associations with the Old Vic; he pointed out that we had two of the best St Joans ever in the room where they would have rehearsed: Eileen Atkins played St Joan for the Prospect Company at the Old Vic in 1977-8; Joan Plowright played the role for the National Theatre at the Old Vic in 1963. Nickolas also read out a letter from Ronald Pickup who had been invited to the party but was away in France. Ronald Pickup said that he often thought about how lucky he was to have six years at the National Theatre, then at Old Vic, at the beginning of his career (1966-72) and it had a huge impact on him. Dame Joan Plowright Dame Joan Plowright then regaled us with some of her memories of the Old Vic, starting with the story of how when she joined the Old Vic school in 1949 part of her ‘training’ was moving chairs in and out of the very room we were in. -

PRESS RELEASE LOCKDOWN Theatre Festival launches as part of BBC Arts Culture in Quarantine initiative 13th & 14th June 2020 **EMBARGOED UNTIL 12:00NOON THURS 30 APRIL** LOCKDOWN Theatre Festival was created by actor Bertie Carvel in response to the closure of theatres amid the coronavirus crisis. This “scratch festival” will bring to the airwaves of BBC Ra- dio 3 and Radio 4 stage plays that had their scheduled runs cancelled or cut short by the pan- demic. The actors will link up via the internet to record “down the line” from isolation, drawing on the muscle memory of fully realised stage productions to reimagine their performances for the radio. Four productions will be broadcast across the Festival’s launch weekend 13th & 14th June as part of BBC Arts’ Culture in Quarantine initiative. Carvel said: “I want to create a cultural snapshot for posterity, because who knows what the future holds? Theatres up and down the country are fa- cing an existential crisis. If I can find a way, every single production that has been forced off the stage because of the lockdown will find a new platform at this festival!” Jonty Claypole, Director of BBC Arts commented: “When we launched Culture in Quarantine I was determined that we would support the performance sector by creating a repertory theatre of broadcast for audiences at home. Bertie’s ambitious project to shine a light on the work of the- atres that had their runs cancelled, with Radio 3 and Radio 4, will add to our growing collection some of the very best theatre talents in the UK.” The technical team have assembled home studio kits for each actor which are sterilised before and after delivery. -

There is some speculation that he served in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 when he was only thirteen. Farquhar entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1694, but left without a degree in 1696 to become an actor. He gave up the stage after accidentally stabbing a fellow actor during a performance of Dryden’s Indian Emperor. He moved to London and began writing comedies, including Love and a Bottle which premiered successfully at Drury Lane in 1698. He subsequently wrote The Constant Couple (1699) and its sequel Sir Henry Wildair (1701), The Inconstant (1699, based on John Fletcher’s The Wild Goose Chase) and The Twin Rivals (1702), the last of his plays to be produced at Drury Lane. -
