How Much "Stuf" is in an Oreo?

There have been a lot of varieties of Oreos over the years and they have not all succeeded as sustainable products. Oreos tend to vary in size and "stufiness". This past July, Oreo Thins were introduced. Could these new have enough "stuf"?

We were able to find these facts and descriptions:

Oreo Thin Original Oreo Double Stuf Oreo Mega Stuf Oreo Mini Oreo Triple Double Oreo

• Original Oreos (introduced March 6, 1912) • Double Stuf Oreos (introduced in 1974) have about twice the normal amount of white creme filling. • Mini Oreos, originally released in 1991, are bite-sized versions of ordinary Oreo cookies. After being discontinued in the late 1990s they were re-released in 2000 • Triple Double Oreos, for sale in the US in summer 2011, combine three wafers with two layers of creme, one vanilla and one . • Mega Stuf Oreos, introduced in February 2013, are similar to Double Stuf Oreo cookies, but with even more white cream filling. They come in both chocolate and golden varieties. • Oreo Thins, Released in 2015, are thin versions of these cookies. They come in chocolate, golden and mint kinds. They have only 40 calories per . At 66% thinner, and 33% less per bag at same cost.1

Dan Anderson, a mathematics teacher in upstate New York, asked his students to do an experiment to find out whether Double Stuf Oreos really have double the stuff. These are the measurements that he and his and his class determined; 36 Original Oreos weighed 416 grams 30 Double Stuf Oreos weighed 440 grams Measuring just the wafers; 23 wafers weighed 93 grams

1. Determine how much "stuf" is in one Original Oreo. Please show your work.

2. Determine how much "stuf" in in one Double Stuf Oreo. Again, show your work.

3. Do Double Stuf Oreos really have double the stuff? Please show your reasoning.

What about the new Oreo Thins? We are interested in replicating Dan’s study on the Oreo Thins. We want to know how much "stuf" and wafer are in a Thin. We also want to know how the ratio of wafer to "stuf" compares to the original Oreo. We collected the following data:

• 20 Oreo Thins weighed 146 grams • 15 Oreo Thin wafers (we weighed wafers with no stuf) weighed 39 grams.

4. How much "stuf" and how much wafer are in an Oreo Thin?

5. Consider the 2011 Triple Double Oreo, the regular Oreo, the Double Stuff and Oreo Thin. Which cookie is the "stuffiest" and which is the least "stuffy"? Rank them from “stuffiest” to least “stuffy”. Show your reasoning and work below.

Note: You have the data for the Thin, Double Stuff and Original. For the Triple Double Oreo assume each layer of "stuf" is the same weight as the Original Oreo layer of stuff and assume each wafer is the same weight as an Original Oreo wafer.

In the 1980's there was an Oreo cookie called "Big Stuf". It was packaged as a single serving cookie and was immense.

We found this info on the Big Stuf cookie from an old nutrition site. For a 0.25 ounce piece of a Big Stuf Oreo cookie;

200 calories, 2 grams of protein, 27grams of , 9 grams of

But we had some trouble finding out how much one Big Stuf cookie weighed and we couldn't do an experiment on the cookie and take it apart and weigh its "stuffiness".

But we did find a picture of the original packaging. We could see on the wrapper that the package (just one cookie) weighed 1.7 ounces or 48 grams.

6. Use this information to figure out the nutritional information for one whole Big Stuf Oreo cookie. Please show your work.

Type of Oreo Cookies Size (Number of cookies) Calories (kcal) Fat (g) Carbs (g) Protein (g) Big Stuf 1

7. Using what you have learned about the ratio of "stuf" to wafer in other Oreo cookies, how many grams of "stuf" and how many grams of wafer could be in the Big Stuff Oreo?

8. What would you like to figure out about a Mega Stuf Oreo?

Extension: Carry out some of your own research! How "stufy" are the Oreo Mini’s? Conduct your own research to determine the ratio of "stuf" to wafer in an Oreo Mini. How does the" stuffiness" of an Oreo Mini compare to the other Oreo cookies?
