Laichwiltach Family Life 5th Annual Every Child Matters Orange Shirt Day Walk National Day of Truth & Reconciliation Who: You! Families/Community Members/Children/Youth Where: Campbell River Spirit Square When: September 30, 2021, 11:00am COVID-19 Rules in effect: safe distancing, mask wearing, hand sanitizing September 30 has recently been known as Orange Shirt Day, a day that is meant to recognize the tragic history of loss, and the lasting effects of Canada’s residential school system. It honours Indigenous residential school survivors, their families, and communities as a vital part of the process of reconciliation.

Why orange shirts? Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.

Before the first day of school on September 7, School District72 wants to share two important updates:

Return to School – COVID Health & Safety Measures

While we all continue to live with the COVID-19 pandemic, health and safety continues to be our top priority as we once again look forward to welcoming students and staff back to school.

Unfortunately, over the last couple of weeks, BC, like many other provinces, has seen a rise in COVID cases due to the Delta variant. This has led the Ministry of Education and provincial health officer to continue some of the health and safety measures that were put in place for schools this past June.

All students in grades 4-12, all K-12 staff, and visitors are required to wear a non-medical face mask while indoors, including at their desk and on school buses. This also applies to younger students in split classes with grade 4 students. Kindergarten to grade 3 students are strongly encouraged to wear a mask.

Daily health checks are also still required for students and visitors before they enter the school and anyone who is feeling unwell or has symptoms of COVID will need to stay home. Families can use the K-12 health check app for help in determining if they can go to school or stay home and get tested for COVID. The app can be found at: https://www.k12dailycheck. gov.bc.ca

Vaccines are the most effective way to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in schools, as well as severe illness, and we encourage everyone that is eligible to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19, if they haven’t already.

We appreciate that some will disagree with the safety measures, either considering them too restrictive, or not restrictive enough, and that some families may still be feeling anxious. We continue to take health and safety direction from the provincial health officer, Ministry of Education, and our local medical health officer.

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation – September 30

We are pleased to share that the federal and provincial governments have recognized the importance of honoring a day for Truth and Reconciliation and all provincial public- school districts will recognize September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Campbell River School District and all its schools will be closed on September 30 to observe this day in reflection.
