Accelerator-based BNCT system in Nagoya University (1) - Project status - kazuki tsuchida Nagoya university, Japan Email: [email protected] akira uritani Nagoya university, Japan yoshiaki kiyanagi Nagoya university, Japan sachiko yoshihashi Nagoya university, Japan kenichi watanabe Nagoya university, Japan shogo honda Nagoya university, Japan akihisa ishikawa Nagoya university, Japan keisuke abo Nagoya university, Japan atsushi yamazaki Nagoya university, Japan yukio tsurita Nagoya university, Japan kazuyo igawa okayama university, Japan hiroyuki michiue okayama university, Japan shuichi furuya okayama university, Japan yasuaki ichikawa okayama university, Japan go ichikawa nagoya university, Japan A low energy proton reaction using lithium is one of the most suitable reactions for the accelerator- based BNCT, because a sufficient flux and good quality of epi-thermal neutron beam can be obtained by using a compact beam shaping assembly (BSA) and low activation of accelerator facility reduces the radiation exposur for medical staffs. However, metalic lithium has several difficulties in chemical properties (low melting point, high chemical activity and 7Be production) as a target material. For resolving those isssues, we have developed a compact and sealed Li target in combination with a DC accelerator. We have constructed a compact accelerator-driven neutron source to confirm the practical reliability and performance of the sealed lithium target for the BNCT application in the Nagoya University. Metalic lithium on the target base plate is covered by a titanium foil. Low-energy and high current proton beam (2.8MeV, 15mA) is passing through the titanium foil and irradiates the lithium (Beam power density < 7MW/m2). Strong turbulent flow is arose with ribs in cooling water channels of the target and have been confirmed to be able to remove high beam flux.

  • Modeling Residential and Workplace Location Assessment on Car Commuting Energy
Transactions on the Built Environment vol 41, © 1999 WIT Press, www.witpress.com, ISSN 1743-3509 Modeling residential and workplace location assessment on car commuting energy S.MyojinO),H.AbeO) ^Faculty of Environmental Science and Technology, Okayama University, 700-8530, Okayama, Japan Email: [email protected] Abstract A model for assessing resident and workplace location on energy for car commute to work is dealt with in the paper. The paper consists of two parts : model building and assessing simplified location patterns. The model is composed of five submodels : location patterns, commute trip distribution, spatial distribution of commute trip density, road traffic speed and energy calculation. Three simplified location patterns are set to resident and workplace respectively, so nine sets of locations are put under assessment The study area is assumed to be circular. The location sets together with commute length distribution form respective spatial distribution of car commute trip density in the area The density is converted to traffic speed Car commuting energy is calculated by applying traffic speed-energy function to the speed distribution. Population is included in some of the submodels so that the model may be applicable over the wide range of population size. The model proved effective for the assessment on the whole on examination of the calculated average traffic speed against the observed in several Japanese cities of different population. The spatial distributions of car commute trip density are grouped into any one of bell, plate and plateau types. Plate typs is dented at and near the center and the plateau is intermediate between bell and plate.

INVESTIGATION OF ROOTZONE SALINITY WITH FIELD MONITORING SYSTEM AT TSUNAMI AFFECTED RICE FEILDS IN MIYAGI, JAPAN Ieyasu Tokumoto*1, Katsumi Chiba2, Masaru Mizoguchi3, and Hideki Miyamoto1 1Department of Environmental Sciences, Saga University, Saga, Japan 5 2Department of Environmental Sciences, Miyagi University, Sendai, Japan 3Department of Global Agricultural Sciences, University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan Correspondence to: Ieyasu Tokumoto ([email protected]) ABSTRACT 10 After the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, thirteen thousand hectares of farmlands were damaged by massive Tsunami near coastal sites in Miyagi, Japan. Some eighty percent of the damaged farmlands have been recovered in 2014, but subsidence and high salinity groundwater make it difficult to completely remove salinity from the soil. To solve the problem, management of saltwater intrusion plays an important role in 15 rootzone salinity control with the Field Monitoring System (FMS), which is remote sensing technology of wireless real-time soil data through the internet data sever to investigate high soil moisture and high salinity in tsunami affected fields. Using the FMS with the time domain transmission system, we monitored soil moisture, electrical conductivity (EC), groundwater level, and EC of groundwater at tsunami damaged 20 paddy fields. The field measurements of the FMS were conducted at two sites of tsunami damaged farmlands in Iwanuma and Higashimatsushima of Miyagi prefecture, Japan. After the Tohoku disaster, co-seismic subsidence of 17-21 cm and 50-60 cm of the land was reported at the sites, respectively.

  • 2013 TOMODACHI-Mitsui & Co. Leadership Program
2013 TOMODACHI-Mitsui & Co. Leadership Program Executive Summary The TOMODACHI Initiative sincerely thanks Mitsui & Co., Ltd. for the opportunity to develop an innovative U.S.-Japan leadership program that inspires, motivates, and engages a diverse set of young professional leaders in the U.S.-Japan relationship. This program set out to recruit participants for whom this could potentially be a transformative experience. We sought out young professionals from areas across the United States and Japan and fields that did not necessarily have strong U.S.- Japan exchange opportunities. We focused on young professionals (under 35, generally), with various level of experience with U.S.-Japan relations, each selected for their leadership potential and their passion to learn more about the relationship. We recruited both men and women, and we set an additional challenge of strong English language skills for the Japanese participants. This may have been very ambitious criteria, but we were thrilled by the quality and energy of both delegations. We have been impressed by the impact we’ve already seen for many of the participants. We look forward to building on Year One of the program over the next two years to continue to improve the program, and to build a network of young leaders across our two countries. Program Overview The TOMODACHI-Mitsui & Co. Leadership Program is designed to inspire and motivate the next generation of young American and Japanese leaders to be active in U.S.-Japan relations. This bicultural experience provides outstanding young professionals with unique access to leaders and counterparts in the U.S.-Japan arena, along with the opportunity to broaden their perspectives in ways 1 that could enhance their work or support initiatives in their professional fields.

A study on intraalveolar exudates in acute mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.∗ Takeo Yoshinouchi, Yuji Ohtsuki, Jiro Fujita, Yoshiki Sugiura, Shogo Banno, Shigeki Sato, and Ryuzo Ueda Abstract Pathologic features of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection (M. pneumonia) are generally non- specific, and the literature regarding the pathologic features of M. pneumonia with intraalveolar exudates is limited. Clinical and histopathological studies were performed in 3 patients with M. pneumonia which did not respond to erythromycin and minocycline, but all rapidly recovered after corticosteroid therapy. In pathologic findings, we observed intraalveolar exudates and focal organi- zation in M. pneumonia, and its intraalveolar lesions were compared between M. pneumonia and bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia containing fibrin (BOOP). Immunohistochemical studies were performed using the streptavidin biotin peroxidase complex method with anti-alpha- smooth muscle actin antibody and anti-pancytokeratin AE1/AE3 antibody. In pathologic findings, more fibrin deposits in intaalveolar lesions were observed in M. pneumonia than in BOOP. In in- taalveolar lesions of M. pneumonia, a larger amount of nuclear debris, more neutrophils, and more erythrocytes were noted.
