  • The Disastrous Impacts of Trump's Border Wall on Wildlife
a Wall in the Wild The Disastrous Impacts of Trump’s Border Wall on Wildlife Noah Greenwald, Brian Segee, Tierra Curry and Curt Bradley Center for Biological Diversity, May 2017 Saving Life on Earth Executive Summary rump’s border wall will be a deathblow to already endangered animals on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. This report examines the impacts of construction of that wall on threatened and endangered species along the entirety of the nearly 2,000 miles of the border between the United States and Mexico. TThe wall and concurrent border-enforcement activities are a serious human-rights disaster, but the wall will also have severe impacts on wildlife and the environment, leading to direct and indirect habitat destruction. A wall will block movement of many wildlife species, precluding genetic exchange, population rescue and movement of species in response to climate change. This may very well lead to the extinction of the jaguar, ocelot, cactus ferruginous pygmy owl and other species in the United States. To assess the impacts of the wall on imperiled species, we identified all species protected as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act, or under consideration for such protection by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (“candidates”), that have ranges near or crossing the border. We also determined whether any of these species have designated “critical habitat” on the border in the United States. Finally, we reviewed available literature on the impacts of the existing border wall. We found that the border wall will have disastrous impacts on our most vulnerable wildlife, including: 93 threatened, endangered and candidate species would potentially be affected by construction of a wall and related infrastructure spanning the entirety of the border, including jaguars, Mexican gray wolves and Quino checkerspot butterflies.

“The Dark Side of the Moon”—Pink Floyd (1973) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by: Daniel Levitin (guest post)* Dark Side of the Moon Angst. Greed. Alienation. Questioning one's own sanity. Weird time signatures. Experimental sounds. In 1973, Pink Floyd was a somewhat known progressive rock band, but it was this, their ninth album, that catapulted them into world class rock-star status. “The Dark Side of the Moon” spent an astonishing 14 years on the “Billboard” album charts, and sold an estimated 45 million copies. It is a work of outstanding artistry, skill, and craftsmanship that is popular in its reach and experimental in its grasp. An engineering masterpiece, the album received a Grammy nomination for best engineered non-classical recording, based on beautifully captured instrumental tones and a warm, lush soundscape. Engineer Alan Parsons and Mixing Supervisor Chris Thomas, who had worked extensively with The Beatles (the LP was mastered by engineer Wally Traugott), introduced a level of sonic beauty and clarity to the album that propelled the music off of any sound system to become an all- encompassing, immersive experience. In his 1973 review, Lloyd Grossman wrote in “Rolling Stone” magazine that Pink Floyd’s members comprised “preeminent techno-rockers: four musicians with a command of electronic instruments who wield an arsenal of sound effects with authority and finesse.” The used their command to create a work that introduced several generations of listeners to art-rock and to elements of 1950s cool jazz. Some reharmonization of chords (as on “Breathe”) was inspired by Miles Davis, explained keyboardist Rick Wright.

  • Brit Floyd Comes to the Vets
Brit Floyd Comes to The Vets Okee dokee folks… Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour turned 74 years old a couple of days ago, and Roger Waters is 76 as is Nick Mason. Founding members Richard Wright and Syd Barrett have passed away. The band has not played together in many, many years and for all intents and purposes Pink Floyd is no more. Their music, however, lives on. More than 250 million Pink Floyd albums have been sold worldwide. David Gilmour doesn’t tour very often. Roger Waters performed at the Newport Folk Festival a couple of years ago and will be in Boston this coming July. While he surely will perform Floyd cuts you probably won’t get to hear some of the deep cuts or many of the songs that you would like to. One cure for this lack of Pink is Brit Floyd, “The World’s Greatest Pink Floyd Show” from England. They will be bringing their Echoes 2020 production to Veterans Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday, March 10. I spoke with Brit Floyd guitarist Damian Darlington via phone about the band and their upcoming show at Vets. Brit Floyd just returned from a mini tour of Japan so I asked what other countries that they have performed in. He informed me that they have performed “in just about every country in Europe” as well as Lebanon, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Russia, and “all sorts of places!” Being in a tribute band myself, I was curious as to how he wound up part of this Floyd Tribute. As he put it, “A chance opportunity that came my way” landed Damian in another Pink Floyd tribute starting back in ’94 and lasted for 17 years.

  • Parents Make When Hiring an Au Pair… and How to Avoid Them! by Susan Asay, Host Mom, Founder & President of A.P.EX
Mistakes 9Parents Make When Hiring an Au Pair… And How to Avoid Them! by Susan Asay, Host Mom, Founder & President of A.P.EX. ProAuPair Dear future Host Parents, If someone asked you to name your greatest accomplishment in life, you would immediately think about your children. Right? No matter how prestigious your career might be, your children are and always will be the best thing you have ever achieved. Unfortunately, your “greatest accomplishment” doesn’t help pay the bills. No matter how much you love your kids (and as parents ourselves, we know you can’t even quantify that amount) it doesn’t magically free you from your other responsibilities. In fact, you added more chaos to your life the moment that first child arrived. Now, like millions of other parents, you’ve found yourself trying to juggle your career, the demands of life, and your children. And it feels like your children are what you neglect the most. That’s why you’ve been searching desperately for the perfect solution. And hiring an Au Pair - bringing someone in your home who can offer your child the consistent, loving care you wish you could - seems like a great solution. But wait! Before you take that first step, you need to realize that hiring an Au Pair is not as simple as finding a babysitter for a weekend date. This is a life-changing experience. But far too many parents rush the hir- ing process and inadvertently shake up their home life, make their children and the Au Pair unhappy, or, worse yet, even put their children in danger.

  • Halina Goldberg
Halina Goldberg The Topos of Memory in the Albums of Maria Szymanowska and Helena Szymanowska-Malewska The custom of maintaining friendship albums, blank books in- tended to be filled with keepsakes inscribed by friends and ac- quaintances, persisted in Europe for some four centuries, though its social contexts and the resulting artifacts underwent many transformations. Mementos left in a friendship album (also known as keepsake album, album amicorum or Stammbuch) could take on various forms – poems, drawings, paper cuttings, musical compo- sitions – depending on the interests of the recipient and the talents of the inscriber. In this essay, I examine one aspect of the album tradition: its emphasis on memory. Using the albums of Maria Szymanowska and her daughter, Helena Szymanowska-Malewska, I discuss three ways the topos of memory takes shape in album inscriptions. First, I explore what musical mementos can tell us about ways in which memory intersected with the nineteenth-century cult of relics. Then I contextualize the role musical album inscriptions had in constructing and maintaining the memory of the Polish nation. Fi- nally, I demonstrate how specific compositional features of musical gifts were designed to invoke psychological processes characteristic of a remembered experience. Mementos and Relics “Where are the hours that oh! so swiftly vanished?” exclaimed Johann Wolfgang Goethe in the much-celebrated poem known today under the title “Aussöhnung”, but originally composed for Maria Szymanowska’s album.1 Goethe’s poem, while extolling music’s power to bring back the past, reminds the reader that even as the present, through music, catches a glimpse of the past, it is 1 “Wo sind die Stunden, überschnell verflüchtigt?” From Johann Wolfgang Goethe inscription in the album of Maria Szymanowska.
