a Wall in the Wild The Disastrous Impacts of Trump’s Border Wall on Wildlife Noah Greenwald, Brian Segee, Tierra Curry and Curt Bradley Center for Biological Diversity, May 2017 Saving Life on Earth Executive Summary rump’s border wall will be a deathblow to already endangered animals on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. This report examines the impacts of construction of that wall on threatened and endangered species along the entirety of the nearly 2,000 miles of the border between the United States and Mexico. TThe wall and concurrent border-enforcement activities are a serious human-rights disaster, but the wall will also have severe impacts on wildlife and the environment, leading to direct and indirect habitat destruction. A wall will block movement of many wildlife species, precluding genetic exchange, population rescue and movement of species in response to climate change. This may very well lead to the extinction of the jaguar, ocelot, cactus ferruginous pygmy owl and other species in the United States. To assess the impacts of the wall on imperiled species, we identified all species protected as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act, or under consideration for such protection by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (“candidates”), that have ranges near or crossing the border. We also determined whether any of these species have designated “critical habitat” on the border in the United States. Finally, we reviewed available literature on the impacts of the existing border wall. We found that the border wall will have disastrous impacts on our most vulnerable wildlife, including: 93 threatened, endangered and candidate species would potentially be affected by construction of a wall and related infrastructure spanning the entirety of the border, including jaguars, Mexican gray wolves and Quino checkerspot butterflies. -

“The Dark Side of the Moon”—Pink Floyd (1973) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by: Daniel Levitin (guest post)* Dark Side of the Moon Angst. Greed. Alienation. Questioning one's own sanity. Weird time signatures. Experimental sounds. In 1973, Pink Floyd was a somewhat known progressive rock band, but it was this, their ninth album, that catapulted them into world class rock-star status. “The Dark Side of the Moon” spent an astonishing 14 years on the “Billboard” album charts, and sold an estimated 45 million copies. It is a work of outstanding artistry, skill, and craftsmanship that is popular in its reach and experimental in its grasp. An engineering masterpiece, the album received a Grammy nomination for best engineered non-classical recording, based on beautifully captured instrumental tones and a warm, lush soundscape. Engineer Alan Parsons and Mixing Supervisor Chris Thomas, who had worked extensively with The Beatles (the LP was mastered by engineer Wally Traugott), introduced a level of sonic beauty and clarity to the album that propelled the music off of any sound system to become an all- encompassing, immersive experience. In his 1973 review, Lloyd Grossman wrote in “Rolling Stone” magazine that Pink Floyd’s members comprised “preeminent techno-rockers: four musicians with a command of electronic instruments who wield an arsenal of sound effects with authority and finesse.” The used their command to create a work that introduced several generations of listeners to art-rock and to elements of 1950s cool jazz. Some reharmonization of chords (as on “Breathe”) was inspired by Miles Davis, explained keyboardist Rick Wright. -

REVIEWS ADAM MICKIEWICZ: THE LIFE OF A ROMANTIC. By Roman Koropeckyj. Ithaca and London: Cornell University Press, 2008. xvii, 549 pp., illustrations, notes, bibliography, index. ISBN (cloth) 978-0-8014-4471-5. Roman Koropeckyj begins his biography of Adam Mickiewicz (1798–1855)— Poland’s greatest poet, canonically speaking—with a jocular epigraph from a Polish hip-hop artist who suggests that Mickiewicz would make a good rapper if he were still alive today. The juxtaposition of this epigraph with an excerpt from Mickiewicz’s famous autobiographical lyric, a retrospective, somber summa of the poet’s life, seems to encapsulate Koropeckyj’s approach to a task that is certainly not for a scholar who is faint of heart: writing a biography of the Polish “national poet” that re/presents Mickiewicz’s voice in its own historical, social, and literary context with a twenty-first century audience and its frame of reference in mind. This monumental biography—a somewhat risky adjective to use since the authorial design appears, inter alia, to remove Mickiewicz from the symbolic monument erected to him by Polish culture during the last two and a half centuries—is a tour de force. To begin with, it is meticulously researched, which is no small feat given the wealth of materials on Mickiewicz, as well as flawlessly written. Koropeckyj writes with sprez- zatura and flair, a combination that makes Mickiewicz seem truly alive in a human, writer-next-door kind of way. At the same time, the biographer turns Mickiewicz into a character, a hero perhaps, of a romantic work of art and “of his time.” Mickiewicz the rebel, exile, pilgrim and wanderer, melancholic, wieszcz (poet-prophet, spiritual leader of the nation), improvisatore, thinker and scholar, “teacher and preacher” (p. -

With these words, Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski captured the enormous impact of Niemcewicz’s Śpiewy historyczne on Pol- ish culture. In my study, I will focus on the music, created for all 33 chants by a group of amateur and professional composers, including Maria Szymanowska. This monumental and patriotic poetry collection was written by a poet, politician, educator, jour- nalist, and freedom fighter, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (1758–1841) who was also a deputy to the Four-Year Seym, a member of the Patriotic Party, a leading advocate of the Constitution of May 3, 1791, Tadeusz Kościuszko’s right hand during the 1794 Insurrec- tion, a member of governments in the Duchy of Warsaw, the Con- gress Kingdom and the November Uprising, and the president of the Society of Friends of Learning in Warsaw (1827–1831). Niemcewicz’s educational approach to history was the prima- ry reason for the design and content of Śpiewy historyczne where each of the 33 poems was accompanied by an essay (Przydatki do śpiewu…) explaining its historical background. Each poem was also set to music and illustrated with an engraving of a no- table scene from the life of its hero. -
