The Championship was organized by the Sports Division of HEC, led by its Director General Mr. Rahim Bux Channa, in collaboration with Pakistan Basketball Federation and Pakistan Sports Board. Other participating teams included Police, Punjab, Rangers, Islamabad, Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP. Both the teams put in their best effort to make the game electrifyingly spectacular for the equally charged audience. Among them were Pir Aftab Shah Jilani, Federal Minister for Sports and Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Special HEC team receives the trophy. Rangers scored an easy win over Islamabad by 47-32 for the third position. Speaking to the audience, after giving away prizes to the winners, the Minister expressed his gratitude to the HEC, Pakistan Sports Board and Pakistan Basketball Federation. “I urge all national sports associations to follow this event's example in promoting sports that will not only provide opportunities to our youth but will also bring out the tremendous talent that they have,” he said. While congratulating the winning team, he also e n c o u r a g e d t h e o t h e r competitors. “For those of you, who did not win any medal, remember that we are proud of you for having given your best. What is important is the spirit of competition. I look forward to seeing you compete in future games. True sportsmanship is reflected through the spirit of giving your best, never giving up and continuously striving to improve,” he stressed. The Minister said that this Championship has been a great event to arouse public interest, to promote the game of Basketball in Pakistan and, especially to encourage the female players. Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali said that sport has a huge part to play in the life of a healthy community. She said that it is an outlet for energies of the young people. “Sport develops individual character and teamwork. Washington, DC April 13, 2010 MASS MEDIA’S IMPACT ON EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: EVIDENCE FROM PAKISTAN Mahreen Hasan, LLB. Thesis Advisor: Gillette Hall, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Does the growing prevalence of mass media in the developing world represent a potentially untapped opportunity to improve educational outcomes in these countries? This paper presents empirical evidence on the academic impact of children’s access to and use of media at home. Using the 2003 Learning and Educational Achievement in Punjab Schools (LEAPS) dataset and multivariate analysis, it finds that weekly hours of media use has a significant positive impact on test scores, although the overall effect of media varies according to how the variable is operationalized. This study also finds that school quality and child characteristics are important determinants of academic performance, reinforcing the findings of the LEAPS researchers (Andrabi et al 2007). For education policymakers, these results provide some support for the potential role of mass media in enhancing learning levels in developing countries. Pakistan is a male dominant society where females are suppressed by the cultural norms. The situation is changing due to many factors that are advancement in literacy rate for both male and females and the awareness of women rights. The objective of the study is to examine the perception of employees about gender stereotyping which may leads to gender discrimination in the work places. The instrument used for collection of data was women as manager scale (WAMS); the sample was taken the higher education institute of Peshawar (University of Peshawar). The result of this study shows that women employee shall capitalize on their mechanical, technical and leadership role. Despite of many rights have been given to females but still there is lack of fit exist between women and the mannish work at managerial posts. Recommended efforts shall be made from government organizations, societal and cultural actors to make working culture favorable for females in the work places and to be taken women and men both equal. The study can be applied at organization level at HR department for the equal policies for both the genders. Females who are stepping into professional career must be aware of the barriers regarding gender stereotyping.
