Inspired by this, the Metro Rough Guide to 50 Great UK Events ion describes the best, brightest and downright quirki- ion T T c est events for 2008, aiming to give you a year to re- c U member. We have split the book into five categories U od – Sports, Offbeat, Culture and Food, Iconic and Spec- od TR tacle – so you can home in on your particular inter- TR in in ests. At the end of each section we also give you a list of relevant photography tips that will ensure you end up with a great portfolio of images to remember each event by. In our first category, Sport, as with the rest of this guide, we’ve tried to avoid the obvious. The Blackpool Dance Festival might not be top of eve- ryone’s list, but the resurgent interest in dance in our opinion makes it a sequinned stunner. Another criterion was beautiful and unusual settings, so the Isle Of Man TT roared into the final straight. In the Offbeat category, Arm Wars and the World Conker Championships are the last word in British eccen- tricity, while the Bog Snorkelling Championships offer a unique if bizarre location. Under Culture and Food, the Common Ridings in Scotland is a unique and colourful occasion with deep historical roots, while the bountiful produce of the Aberga- venny Food Festival should provide plenty to attract wannabe gourmets. Our choices of Iconic events provide perfect opportunities for happy snapping – from the outrageous hats of Ascot to the grace- ful sails of Cowes Week. In the Spectacle category, too, photographers are spoilt for choice, from Chi- nese New Year in London, with its drummers and lion dancers, to the jousting knights of England’s Medieval Festival in Sussex and the cross-country caper that is the Aviemore Sled Dog Rally. Whether you bring your camera along or simply immerse yourself in the collective quirks, there’s heaps to enjoy in the rich variety of events that Britain has to offer.     INTERNATIONAL MIRE NEWSLETTER CONSERVATION GROUP issue 2005/3, September 2005 The International Mire Conservation Group (IMCG) is an international network of specialists having a particular interest in mire and peatland conservation. The network encompasses a wide spectrum of expertise and interests, from research scientists to consultants, government agency specialists to peatland site managers. It operates largely through e-mail and newsletters, and holds regular workshops and symposia. For more information: consult the IMCG Website: http://www.imcg.net IMCG has a Main Board of 15 people from various parts of the world that has to take decisions between congresses. Of these 15 an elected 5 constitute the IMCG Executive Committee that handles day-to-day affairs. The Executive Committee consists of a Chairman (Jennie Whinam), a Secretary General (Hans Joosten), a Treasurer (Philippe Julve), and 2 additional members (Tatiana Minaeva, Piet-Louis Grundling). Viktor Masing (†), Hugo Sjörs, and Richard Lindsay have been awarded honorary membership of IMCG. Editorial Several important events are laying ahead of us, first of all the Ramsar Conference of Parties (CoP9, 8-15 November, Kampala, Uganda), where IMCG will be actively present. In this Newsletter you may find an overview of the peatland issues in the conference documents and information on some of the activities that IMCG organises, including a fascinating excursion to Uganda mires and a side event together with CoCoGAP. Furthermore, we are working on promotion material: a peatland brochure (with CoCoGAP), a flyer on African peatlands, and a new general IMCG flyer. Michael Trepel has already produced a beautiful set of postcards to bring the major global peatland issues under wide attention.

    MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2019 KEENELAND SEPTEMBER A STRANGE YEAR FOR 3-YEAR-OLDS GETS EVEN WEIRDER SALE CONCLUDES The Week in Review, by Bill Finley Just 12 days before this current crop of 3-year-olds would graduate from its juvenile year, a $16,000 maiden-claiming race at Gulfstream turned into the key race of 2018. It was won by Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) and the third-place finisher was Math Wizard (Algorithms), the winner of Saturday=s GI Pennsylvania Derby. Two Grade I winners coming out of a $16,000 maiden claimer has assuredly never happened before and will never happen again, but it foreshadowed what was to become a very strange year for the 3-year-old male division. With the GI Pennsylvania Derby, the last two-turn dirt race on the year restricted to 3-year-olds, having now been run, the division is a bigger mess than ever. Perhaps it was fitting that Math Wizard won the race because he fit the narrative. He was claimed for $25,000, a race he won $8.2-million American Pharoah filly | Horsephotos by 18 1/2 lengths Jan. 31 by trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. Cont. p9 by Jessica Martini IN TDN EUROPE TODAY The 13-day Keeneland September Yearling Sale, paced by a BRIDGING THE GAP: HOOKED ON KEENELAND record-setting $8.2-million filly, concluded Sunday in Lexington Kelsey Riley investigates the European buyers purchasing with its fifth-highest gross ever. In all, 2,855 yearlings sold for Keeneland yearlings with an eye to next year’s breeze-up sales.
