Founded by His Exalted Highness Mir Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII, the Nizam of Hyderabad, it takes pride in being the seventh oldest university in the country, the third oldest in South India, and the oldest in the state of Telangana. It was the first University to impart higher education through Urdu as the medium of instruction, until the mid-1950s, when the medium of instruction was changed to English. Until recently, Osmania University was the largest affiliating University in Asia with more than 1000 colleges affiliated to it. Currently, around 721 affiliated colleges spread over three districts of Telangana (Hyderabad, RangaReddy,Medchal-Malkajgiri, Siddipet, and Medak) cater to the educational needs of nearly 3.35 lakh students. It was accredited with a ‘FIVE STAR’ in 2001, reaccredited with ‘A’ in 2008, and with ‘A+’ grade in 2017 by the NAAC.The University has also been granted ‘Category I’ status by the MHRD and UGC in 2018. It has been ranked 26th among Universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework for 2019. It has figured among the “Top 300 BRICS and Emerging Economies 2019” and ranked among the “Top 250 Asian Universities” by the Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking. It was ranked 34th in the first-ever QS India Ranking 2019 and 141st in the QS BRICS Ranking 2019. It has been consistently ranked among the best ten universities in the country for the last nine consecutive years as per the surveys conducted by the India Today - Nielsen and the Week-Hansa Research Survey. Osmania University has been conferred with the coveted status of University with Potential for Excellence (UPE)
