    GE partners with Ministry of Skill Development to give boost to Skill India Mission; Sources skilled workers for its Greenfield manufacturing base in Bihar New Delhi, 13 June 2017: General Electric (GE) in partnership with Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is planning to source workers and skilled technicians from Bihar itself , in line with its Greenfield manufacturing base being set up in Marhaura (Bihar), se rvice facilities in Roza (UP) and Gandhidham (Gujarat). Th is project was launched as a part of PM’s ‘Make in India’ scheme in which GE agreed to invest close to $200 million and will certainly boost employment opportunities for the local people. Under this project, GE even plans to set up state of the art Skilling Centres with support from the Skill Ministry which is headed by Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy . As part of the project, t he production of first railway coaches will start from mid -next year from Saran. GE, in collaboration with India Railways, is nearing completion of a Diesel Locomotive Manufacturing Plant in Marhaura, Saran district in Bihar. A new transmission line to Marhaura is being created to provide electricity to this factory. GE is also coming up with a state of the art maintenance shed for diesel locomotives in railway’s land in Roza near Shahjahanpur. To discuss the progress of the project, John G. Rice, Vice chairman of General Electr ic Company met Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy today . Mr Rice thanked Shri Rudy for his consistent support on the project.     DISTRICT PROFILE SARAN INTRODUCTION Saran district is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar. Saran district is a part of Saran division. Saran district is also known as Chhapra district because the headquarters of this district is Chhapra. Saran district is bounded by the districts of Siwan, Gopalganj, West Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Vaishali and Bhojpur of Bihar and Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. Important rivers flowing through Saran district are Ganga, Gandak, and Ghaghra which encircle the district from south, north east and west side respectively. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Saran was earlier known as ‘SHARAN’ which means refuge in English, after the name given to a Stupa (pillar) built by Emperor Ashoka. Another view is that the name Saran has been derived from SARANGA- ARANYA or the deer forest since the district was famous for its forests and deer in pre-historic times. In ancient days, the present Saran division, formed a part of Kosala kingdom. According to 'Ain-E-Akbari’, Saran was one of the six Sarkars/ revenue divisions, constituting the province of Bihar. By 1666, the Dutch established their trade in saltpetre at Chhapra. Saran was one of the oldest and biggest districts of Bihar. In 1829, Saran along with Champaran, was included in the Patna Division. Saran was separated from Champaran in 1866 when Champaran district was constituted. In 1981, the three subdivisions of the old Saran district namely Saran, Siwan and Gopalganj became independent districts which formed a part of Saran division. There are a few villages in Saran which are known for their historical and social significance.

The census data contain several demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the lowest administrative unit i.e. of each village and town and ward of the district. The district of Saran is situated between 25º30' and 26º13' North latitude and 84º24' and 85º15' N East latitude in the southern part, often newly created Saran Division of north Bihar. The Ganges constitute the Southern boundary of the district beyond which lie the districts of Bhojpur and Patna. To the north lie the districts of Siwan and Gopalganj. The Gandak forms the dividing line with Vaishali and Muzaffarpur districts in the east. To the west Saran lies part of Siwan and district of Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, the Ghaghra constituting a natural boundary between Saran and Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, the Ghaghra constituting a natural boundary between Saran and Ballia contains three Sub-Divisions viz., Chapra Sadar, Mrhoura and Sonepur with headquarters at Chapra.
