Pinky Kumari, International Journal of Research in Engineering, IT and Social Sciences, ISSN 2250-0588, Impact Factor: 6.452, Volume 08 Issue 02, February 2018, Page 106-110 Quantitative and Qualitative Study of Population of Saran District (Bihar) Pinky Kumari (Research Scholar, University Department Of Geography, Bra Bihar University Muzaffarpur) Abstract: The need of data at the grass root level for the administrative and planning purposes at sub micro level as well as academic studies prompted the innovation of District. The census data contain several demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the lowest administrative unit i.e. of each village and town and ward of the district. The district of Saran is situated between 25º30' and 26º13' North latitude and 84º24' and 85º15' N East latitude in the southern part, often newly created Saran Division of north Bihar. The Ganges constitute the Southern boundary of the district beyond which lie the districts of Bhojpur and Patna. To the north lie the districts of Siwan and Gopalganj. The Gandak forms the dividing line with Vaishali and Muzaffarpur districts in the east. To the west Saran lies part of Siwan and district of Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, the Ghaghra constituting a natural boundary between Saran and Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, the Ghaghra constituting a natural boundary between Saran and Ballia contains three Sub-Divisions viz., Chapra Sadar, Mrhoura and Sonepur with headquarters at Chapra. Chapra happens to be the principal town of the district. There are 15 Anchals and 20 Community Development Blocks. Keywords: Saran, Bihar, Population, workers, people I. INTRODUCTION Saran district of Bihar has total population of 3,951,862 as per the Census 2011. Out of which 2,022,821 are males while 1,929,041 are females. In 2011 there were total 631,097 families residing in Saran district. The Average Sex Ratio of Saran district is 954. As per Census 2011 out of total population, 8.9% people lives in urban areas while 91.1% lives in the rural areas. The average literacy rate in urban areas is 75.1% while that in the rural areas is 65%. Also the Sex Ratio of Urban areas in Saran district is 912 while that of rural areas is 958. The population of Children of age 0-6 years in Saran district is 681142 which are 17% of the total population. There are 353738 male children and 327404 female children between the ages 0-6 years. Thus as per the Census 2011 the Child Sex Ratio of Saran is 926 which is less than Average Sex Ratio (954) of Saran district. The total literacy rate of Saran district is 65.96%. The male literacy rate is 63.56% and the female literacy rate is 45.19% in Saran district. Administrative Set Up The district of Saran which is situated in north Bihar. Administratively it constitutes the Saran Division and houses the Headquarter of and Divisional Commissionery at Chapra also. The Ganges constitute the southern boundary of the district beyond which lie the districts of Bhojpur and Patna. To the north of Saran lie the districts of Gopalganj and Muzaffarpur and district of Siwan and part of Uttar Pradesh (Ballia district) flank Saran from west and North West and river Gogra constitute the natural boundary between Saran and Ballia. Vaishali district lie in its west after Gandak which is dividing line between Saran and Vaishali districts.A total of 3 Sub-Divisions, 20 Community Development Blocks and 1764 villages constitute the present Saran-district. There were five Towns/Municipalities in the district namely 1. Marhaura (NAC), 2. Revelganj (M), 3. Chapra (M), 4. Dighwara (NAC) and 5. Sonepur (NAC) in 2001. However civic status nomenclature of all towns has been changed during the decade which is as follows 1.Marhaura (NP), 2. Revelganj (NP), 3.Chapra (Nagar Parishad), 4.Dighwara (NP), and 5.Sonepur (NP). No new town has been notified in the district during the decade. Besides three statutory towns, One Census town, namely, Sanrha also exists in Saran C.D Block. District Collector is head of the district administration; sub-division is headed by sub-divisional officers. Community Development Blocks and Circle Offices are the primary level of civil administration and revenue collections in the district. Block Development Officers and Circle Officers are posted in these offices respectively who assist Sub-Divisional and District officers of the district. Demographics The district is home to about 39.5 lakh people, among them about 20.2 lakh (51%) are male and about 19.3 lakh (49%) are female. 87% of the whole population are from general caste, 12% are from schedule caste and 1% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Saran district is 17%, among them 52% are boys and 48% are girls. Rural population density of Saran district is 1397 and urban population density is 5377 persons per km2. In 2001 census total population here were about 32.5 lakh. Female population growth rate of the district is 20.9% which is -1.5% lower than male population growth rate of 22.4%. General caste population has increased by 20.6%; Schedule caste population has increased by 21.6%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 451.8% and child population has increased by 5.2% in the district since last census. Literacy rate (children under 6 are excluded) of Saran is 66%. 77% of male and 54% of female population is literate here. Overall literacy rate in the district has increased by 14%. Male literacy has gone up by 10% and female literacy rate has gone up by 18%. For women 4% of total female population is main and 6% are marginal workers. Percentage of working population - Saran CONCLUSION Saran ranks 7th in terms of population (39,51,862) and 16th in terms of area (2,641 sq.km.) in the state of Bihar.
