Spirit Night, Donates It has been 21 years since McK- enzie last qualified for the state tournament and there is one per- Funds for Rebels’ Trip son on McKenzie’s staff that has had a front row seat to both trips. That would be assistant basketball coach Larry Joe Smith. He was the head coach of the ’98 Rebels that made the trip. It’s ironic in a way that the ’98 team was just honored during this season while this team was working their way through the regular season. The first words from Coach Smith were that he didn’t want this to be about him. Well it is and it isn’t. You see, Coach Smith has been a teacher and coached multiple sports at McKenzie for the last 35 years or so. And if you include the two years at DeSoto Academy in Arkansas, he’s clos- ing in on 40 years in the educating and coaching business. At one time or another he has coached nearly every sport sponsored by the McKenzie School System. He has coached football, basketball, baseball, softball, and golf.
