Invariably their infancies and youth are pinched, puzzling, and unpropitious and their adolescence, even when finally promising is bumptious and conflicted…”It is in this context, chronicling the institutional history of Ravenshaw, steeped with an intimate “colonial past”, with its heterogeneous moments of engagements over a period of two centuries defies any simplistic and linear imagination. “Monument which represents Orissa to the outside World”, “Temple of learning”, “stately in proportions which compares not unfavorably with the only other temple – The temple of Jagannath” and “source of justice and pride to every Oriya” were the qualifiers invoked to depict Ravenshaw in the high noon of a colonial order.

  • National Law University, Orissa
Prospectus 2011-12 National Law University, Orissa Hon'ble Justice K G Balakrishan, the then Chief Justice of India and Visitor of NLUO along with Chief Minister and Law Minister of Orissa Visitor's Message As the Visitor of the National Law University, Orissa, nominated by Hon'ble the Chief Justice of India, I would like to write a few words about the progress made by the University. In less than two years, the University has acquired a reputation for diversity in teaching, research, academic staff and students. NLUO prides itself on being a law university, which promotes legal education from cross disciplinary perspective, thus serving the cause of integrated knowledge. In my opinion, the defining attribute of this law university is its compelling vision of legal education. It is reflected in its effort to create an intellectual ambiance to ensure that the study of the law is firmly grounded in real-world experience and practice. It thus ensures that NLUO graduates are equipped with dynamic intellectual energy to offer outstanding contributions to society throughout their professional careers. With an active Chancellor in the Chief Justice of Orissa, dedicated Vice-Chancellor, unmatched faculty, motivated students, innovative course curricula and pedagogic method, NLUO surely has a very bright future ahead of it. The State Government has extended financial grants for putting up the infrastructure of the University and the class-rooms, administrative block and the hostels in the new campus in CDA are under construction. With all the facilities in place, I am sure, the NLUO will, in the near future, produce good and capable leaders of the Bar and the Bench.

NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY ODISHA [Established by Odisha Act IV of 2008] Our Logo NLUO’s logo is in the form of an escutcheon (heraldic shield) divided into four quarters, coloured blue and white alternately. On the top left quarter is a balance representing the scales of justice. On the top right quarter is a gavel representing the might of the judiciary. Just below them, across the Nombril Point, runs a scroll bearing the inscription ‘National Law University Odisha’. Below this is a representation of the Indian Constitution. Superimposed on the centre of the shield, centring on the Fess Point, is a Chakra or wheel from the Sun Temple at Konark, which represents the State of Odisha. Our Motto NLUO’s motto has been sourced from Kautilya’s Arthashastra, one of ancient India’s great legal texts. At Chapter III, Book 1, Sloka 39, four varieties of law are identified, namely Dharma (sacral law), Vyavahara (transactional law), caritra (customary law), and Rajasasana (royal edicts). Sloka 40 determines the source of each type. In this context the book asserts, ‘satye sthito dharmah’ or ‘Law locates in the truth’. This precept is surely as valid today as it was in Kautilya’s times.
