You Can’T Break €˜Luke Cage’ in Season 2 You Can’t Break ‘Luke Cage’ in Season 2 03.06.2018 "You can't burn me, you can't blast me, and you definitely can't break me," Luke Cage (Mike Colter) tells viewers in Netflix's teaser for the premiere of the Marvel superhero series' sophomore season. It picks up with Cage having cleared his name, and becoming a celebrity on the streets of Harlem, "with a reputation as bulletproof as his skin," says Netflix. "But his visibility has increased his need to protect the community and find the limits of who he can and can't save. With the rise of a formidable new foe, Luke is forced to confront the fine line that separates a hero from a villain." And it seems nobody is going to get in his way. "Wanna test me?" he says to the camera in the teaser. "Step up. I'm right here." Netflix also released first-look images (posted above) that show him in a renovated Pops, goofing around with kids, encountering new enemies, and fighting alongside NYPD detective Misty Knight (Simone Missick, Ray Donovan) who now has her trademark bionic arm after it was cut off in Marvel's The Defenders. Luke Cage also stars Alfre Woodard (The Lion King), Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy), Mustafa Shakir (The Deuce), Gabrielle Dennis (Rosewood), and Rosario Dawson (Marvel's Daredevil). Season two is executive produced by showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker (Ray Donovan), Jim Chory (Marvel's Jessica Jones) and Jeph Loeb (Marvel's Jessica Jones), who also serves as Marvel's head of television. The series is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix. The season two premiere episode is directed by Lucy Liu. Marvel's Luke Cage returns June 22 on Netflix..

  • Loving, Black Teenage Instagram Celebrity Converts to Islam. Here's
A shape-shifting, pepperoni- loving, black teenage Instagram celebrity converts to Islam. Here’s what happens. THE STORY Summer is a 17-year old carefree black girl, whose world is turned upside down when her mother, a popular meteorologist named Jade Jennings, abruptly converts to Islam and becomes a different person, prompting Summer to reevaluate her identity. When her mother coerces her into converting, Summer rebels. But, while Summer initially resists Islam, she eventually becomes drawn to its teachings, particularly around the "Jinn," supernatural beings who occupy a parallel world and have free will, like humans. Summer soon realizes that the religion is more complex than she thought, and that people interpret it in different ways. Yet, Summer's need to be free and untethered to any one way of being clashes with her mother’s strict interpretation of the faith and causes a growing rift between them. When Summer meets Tahir, a fellow Muslim classmate who attends the same masjid, she is further drawn to the religion and especially to his parent’s fluid, freeing practice of it. As Summer and Tahir build a connection based in laughter, curiosity, and beef pepperoni, a budding sexual attraction ignites, causing a major conflict between physical desire and piety. • Luke Cage: Review of Netflix Original Series
Luke Cage: Review of Netflix original series Author : Robert D. Cobb Marvel debuted another one of its Netflix gems Friday. Anticipation had built up since Mike Colter appeared as Luke Cage on Jessica Jones in the Marvel shared universe. So much so, Netflix servers couldn't handle the workload. The streaming service went down for hours on Saturday, leaving viewers to watch regular cable, like animals! So just what was so exciting enough about Luke Cage that broke the internet? http://gty.im/120347526 Mike Colter as Luke Cage: Mike Colter is everything you’d expect out of our title character. He’s got the size to pull off the tough guy roll. However, it’s his acting ability that carries the character. Too many times shows cast a muscle-bound actor who has limited acting ability and the character suffers. Luke Cage is a vigilante of the people and to go that route would’ve doomed the show. Not only is Colter’s version of Cage believable, but he also manages to make him likable and relatable. A character with no powers to show than super strength, Colter had the challenge of bringing the character to life without the awe of devices like Mjölnir or Captain America’s shield. He nails it, earning Colter a 4/5. http://gty.im/612083430 Mahershala Ali as Cornell 'Cottonmouth' Stokes: Very few times does a villain steal the show. Ali’s Cottonmouth is that villain. Cornell Stokes is the smooth talking, get anything he wants, then snap the next moment, kind of guy.

  • Afrosurrealism, Aristotle, and Racial Presence in Netflix's Luke Cage
e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Afrosurrealism, Aristotle, and Racial Presence in Netflix’s Luke Cage Angela D. Mack Texas Christian University Fort Worth, Texas, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT This essay examines Netflix’s Luke Cage as a rhetorical reading of racial embodiment and productions of the cultural identity of Blackness and People of Color, and the tensions they produce to help audiences understand the current climatic flux between racial hostility and American idealism. With only two seasons in the small-screen version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Cheo Hodari Coker’s adaptation of the 1970s Blaxploitation Power Man comic foregrounded the recent wave of superhero narratives that expanded minority/gender representation from both major comic houses (MCU and DC Extended Universe [DCEU]). This examination employs the lens of Afrosurrealism, a conceptual framework of understanding Blackness through its many complex manifestations of cultural and aesthetic representations in art across time. It is through this Afrosurrealist concept where references to race such as “Black”, “Brown”, “White,” and “People of Color” are applied to describe specific people groups/collectives throughout this essay. Using Afrosurrealism, I argue that Luke Cage can be analyzed through Aristotle’s three species of rhetoric: the judicial rhetoric of the past, the epideictic rhetoric of the present, and the deliberative rhetoric of the future. By using these three rhetorical branches, this analysis demonstrates a diasporic reading of race with Harlem as its bridge to the “realms” of New York City and beyond. This reading of a Black superhero’s world, Luke Cage’s “Harlem World,” thus brings about an awareness of a necessary racial presence, resulting in a grounding of racial realities, that subverts an ideal post-racial afterlife in the post-Obama “American” universe.

ABSTRACT Netflix released Marvel’s Luke Cage in 2016 to critical acclaim. Born from a 1970s comic book, the series features Luke Cage, an African-American superhero. Cage is a big, bald, bulletproof black man. Instead of tights and a cape, Cage wears a hoodie calling the audience to remember Trayvon Martin and other victims of white racism. Theologian James Cone created Black Liberation Theology in the 1970s. As a result of Cone’s work, Black Liberation Theology addresses the issue of white racism from a theological standpoint.
