“Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way. -

Oral History Center University of California The Bancroft Library Berkeley, California The Freedom to Marry Oral History Project Thalia Zepatos Thalia Zepatos on Research and Messaging in Freedom to Marry Interviews conducted by Martin Meeker in 2016 Copyright © 2017 by The Regents of the University of California ii Since 1954 the Oral History Center of the Bancroft Library, formerly the Regional Oral History Office, has been interviewing leading participants in or well-placed witnesses to major events in the development of Northern California, the West, and the nation. Oral History is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is bound with photographs and illustrative materials and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it is reflective, partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable. ********************************* All uses of this manuscript are covered by a legal agreement between The Regents of the University of California and Thalia Zepatos dated September 6, 2016. Appendix 2-2 1 ISSUE ID COMMENT NO
KLAMATH RIVER BASIN FISHERIES TASK FORCE MIDTERM EVALUATION INTERVIEW RESPONSES1 ISSUE ID COMMENT NO. I. WOULD THE SITUATION BE WORSE 3 Yes, would be worse without the Act and TF WITHOUT THE ACT AND TASK FORCE? Only have $1 million per year to address a huge basin with all kinds of problems The fact that came up with a plan at all, generated with citizen input, with the TF guiding the pen of the author, is a huge success But a plan is only as good as it its implementation 7 Probably would be worse without the Act and TF. At least TF does get interests to the table. If not talking would be suing. Does serve as a forum, attaches faces to names, become better educated on opposing issues. Members don’t agree on a range of issues, but the forum has merit. 13 Act has helped some; would be worse off without it. Provides a starting point, brings information to the table. Failure is weak stock management under current system. Listing was the only alternative. 14 No, the situation would not be worse without the TF. If TF weren’t there we wouldn’t miss it. There is a better way to address fisheries problems than putting the money into the political arena. Should spend the money on the fish. Is not proud of the way the TF is operating. Are not addressing the real problems from Iron Gate to the Pacific. Fish problems are also affected by the “black box” of processes in the Pacific, harvests in the ocean, Native American harvest and Trinity diversion, which the TF cannot or will not address. -

Inside the Acms with RAC Clark Our Annual Interview with Exec
April 18, 2016, Issue 495 Inside The ACMs With RAC Clark Our annual interview with Exec. Producer RAC Clark offers insight into the 51st ACM Awards (4/3) and many of its notable performances. CA: Let’s hit the numbers first and talk about this year’s ratings... RAC: They sucked. I’ll just say that. They sucked. [Ed. Note: 11.18 million viewers, 2.3 rating/7 share]. But it was one of the more competitive nights we’ve had since being up against the American Idol finale a few years back. The Walking Dead was big. The iHeart awards didn’t rate that well, really, so I don’t think that hurt us. The Walking Dead really got us and Steve Harvey’s Little Big Shots is a new hit on NBC that actually beat us in the second half-hour at 8pm. We won the night, but ratings were down year- to-year after a spectacular year in Dallas with the 50th. When we talked to producer Robert Deaton about the CMAs, he said, “I’ve never completely understood wanting to compare us against the AMAs, Grammys, ACMs or In A Big Way: EMI/Nashville’s Eric Paslay (third Oscars.” His point was, an awards show’s competition is from right) with (l-r) WEBG (Big 95.5)/Chicago’s Erik what it’s facing that night, not something that’s airing in Zachary and Mason, EMI’s Chris Fabiani and the an entirely different month. Do you agree? station’s Steve Stewart, Alabama and Remy. (continued on page 7) ©2016 Country Aircheck™ — All rights reserved. -
1 Breakfast at Tiffany's Truman Capote, 1958 I Am Always Drawn Back To
1 Breakfast at Tiffany's surrounded by photographs of ice-hockey stars, there is always a large bowl of fresh Truman Capote, 1958 flowers that Joe Bell himself arranges with matronly care. That is what he was doing when I came in. I am always drawn back to places where I have lived, the houses and their "Naturally," he said, rooting a gladiola deep into the bowl, "naturally I wouldn't have neighborhoods. For instance, there is a brownstone in the East Seventies where, got you over here if it wasn't I wanted your opinion. It's peculiar. A very peculiar thing during the early years of the war, I had my first New York apartment. It was one room has happened." crowded with attic furniture, a sofa and fat chairs upholstered in that itchy, particular red "You heard from Holly?" velvet that one associates with hot days on a tram. The walls were stucco, and a color He fingered a leaf, as though uncertain of how to answer. A small man with a fine rather like tobacco-spit. Everywhere, in the bathroom too, there were prints of Roman head of coarse white hair, he has a bony, sloping face better suited to someone far ruins freckled brown with age. The single window looked out on a fire escape. Even so, taller; his complexion seems permanently sunburned: now it grew even redder. "I can't my spirits heightened whenever I felt in my pocket the key to this apartment; with all its say exactly heard from her. I mean, I don't know. -
