Anything to do with an eye pad? Or perhaps an eye patch - as worn by pirates? ‘I Pads in schools’ was the topic given to Lutterworth Speakers ‘Tag Topics’ team in a recent evening get together with Barwell Cedars Speakers Club and we opted for the more unusual interpretation. This resulted in a fairly silly presentation about children dressing in pirate costumes for World Book Day, with Health and Safety concerns over the construction of a pirate ship and the use of its attendant plank featuring quite strongly. Barwell's team had the more sober topic of the retirement age going back to 70, with the likely ramifications of this unpopular move. The evening also featured speeches from Edward Taylor about global weather and young Thomas Roe from Barwell about his future career. An unresponsive casualty warrants an immediate 999 ambulance call with an 8 minute response time. Illuminate the house well so the ambulance can find it readily. Fibrillation occurs when the heart beat is out of phase and is the symptom of a cardiac arrest. The excruciating pain is felt deep in the central chest area and usually continues to worsen (but sometimes there is no pain). To ease pain, sit on floor with back resting against a wall and raise knees so the body is in a “W” shape. The ambulance call receiver will identify from the post code if there is a defibrillator within 500m and providing that the casualty will not be left on their own, will give the four figure access code for the box. The defibrillator is foolproof giving instructions beginning with bare the chest, diagrams show where to fix two sticky contacts (chest hair may have to be shaved) and the machine then relates clearly what it is doing. It will not work if a heart beat is detected so keep away from the patient. After the shock is administered, chest compressions for 2 minutes are recommended which entail 2” deep depressions 100 per minute. These are administered by the heel section of one hand with the other hand above, to the centre chest between nipples and because the activity is exhausting a short rest after each 30 is recommended. This should take place on a rigid surface like the floor. If patient coughs or vomits, place in the recovery position. If there is still no response a further shock will be administered. Pete was thanked for both his excellent talk and demonstration by Ivy Hall. The Rose Bowl for 2014's monthly competitions was won by June Whiting and the February competition winner was Linda Hollingworth. Enquiries may be made on 01455 202499.

Andrew has a wealth of knowledge in the clothing fashions through the ages and on this occasion he revealed how clothing was influenced by the culture changes during and after the First World War. This was a period when women were called upon to tackle many of the jobs hitherto carried out by the menfolk who had gone off to the trenches. After the war the pinched waists of women’s styles gave way to more relaxed and loose fitting dresses and trousers. Email: [email protected] The Lutterworth & District Journal 27 TV News Presenter to support Leicestershire’s Hospice Anne Davies, the popular television presenter is to become a patron of LOROS. Currently presenting BBC Today, Anne has had extensive broadcast experience including radio and TV, both behind and in front of the camera as well as being recognised by the Royal Television Society in 2012 as ‘Best on Screen Personality’. Anne visited LOROS in the summer of 2014 and was very touched and impressed by the services she saw at first hand. “To see the difference LOROS makes to so many local patients and their families was a very moving experience”, said Anne, “I am delighted to become a LOROS Patron so that I can help LOROS continue to provide their much needed services to terminally ill patients and their families”. Anne will be joining Alan Birchenall, Julia Bradbury, Ali Mauchlen, Martin Johnson and Mark Selby as fellow patrons. Patrons are household names, locally and in some cases nationally, who generously provide support in a variety of different ways to help promote LOROS and raise funds. “I am thrilled that Anne is joining us”, said Diane Morris, Fundraising Manager at LOROS, “She brings a wealth of experience and we hope to be working closely with her over the coming years”. LOROS is very much reliant on voluntary donations to deliver free, end of life care to over 2,500 patients a year in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, so the support of Patrons like Anne is vital. “This is our 30th year of delivering invaluable care to our patients”, said Paul Keirnan, Director of Income Generation and Communications, “The support from people like Anne is an amazing boost”.
