  • The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network
PLATFORMS AND OUTSIDERS IN PARTY NETWORKS: THE EVOLUTION OF THE DIGITAL POLITICAL ADVERTISING NETWORK Bridget Barrett A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Daniel Kreiss Adam Saffer Adam Sheingate © 2020 Bridget Barrett ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Bridget Barrett: Platforms and Outsiders in Party Networks: The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network (Under the direction of Daniel Kreiss) Scholars seldom examine the companies that campaigns hire to run digital advertising. This thesis presents the first network analysis of relationships between federal political committees (n = 2,077) and the companies they hired for electoral digital political advertising services (n = 1,034) across 13 years (2003–2016) and three election cycles (2008, 2012, and 2016). The network expanded from 333 nodes in 2008 to 2,202 nodes in 2016. In 2012 and 2016, Facebook and Google had the highest normalized betweenness centrality (.34 and .27 in 2012 and .55 and .24 in 2016 respectively). Given their positions in the network, Facebook and Google should be considered consequential members of party networks. Of advertising agencies hired in the 2016 electoral cycle, 23% had no declared political specialization and were hired disproportionately by non-incumbents. The thesis argues their motivations may not be as well-aligned with party goals as those of established political professionals. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES AND FIGURES .................................................................................................................... Ray and Update I wanted to meet face-to-face to hammer out some organization directional issues and to set some mutual goals for the future. Our members should be aware that when you are a member of the USMC VTA you are also a member of the Vietnam Tankers Historical Foundation. We are beginning to see an increase in activity with the historical aspects of our organization. We are sending out a call for more and more of our members to get involved in recording the story of your time in-country before checking into the “The Big Tank Park in the Sky.” We have already lost several members and with their passing so goes their unique personal history of their Vietnam combat experience. Philippine Joumal ofPublic Administration, Vol. XXXIV, No.4 (October 1990) Women and Politics in Contemporary Philippines LUZVlMINDA G. TANCANGCO* .The study introduces the gender factor into the analysis ofthe nature, forms and qualityofpoliticalparticipation by Filipino women. In so doing, the inquiryseeks to offer "0 qualification on the "e:tceptiontilstatus" often claimed by Filipino women citing their impressive presence and achievements in social and economic fields as their empirical boses. Despite this, however, the political arena remains os a man's world in the Philippines. Thus, the investigation poses three hypotheses: (1) that male dominance in Philippinepoliticsprevents Filipino women from attaining fuUequalitywith men; (2) that continuedmaledominoncein politics is anchored on male control overkeydecisionmaking processes and mole monopoly ofthe use ofviolence during peace time; and (3) thot the persistence ofmole dominonte in politics is sustained by deep-seated bioses against the natureofwomen os internalized within the family. To transcend the constrainingfactors towardgreaterpoliticalparticipation by Filipino women, the cont;eptofpartnership and its operotionalization is e:tploredand offered. Introduction Objectives and Significance ofthe Study This paper serves as the final report of the research project on "Women and Politics in ContemporaryPhilippines"supportedby the Swedish Agencyfor Research Cooperation with Developing Countries (SAREC). 'For its empirical base, the inquiry benefited immensely from the Elections Study Series being conducted by the University of the Philippines, College of Public Administration (UPCPA) from 1984 up to the present. The study zeroes in on theobservationthatin thePhilippines, as in otherpartsofAsia, the role of women has always been an active one (Aquino 1985:319). However, it is meaningful to qualify the nature, forms, level or quality of women's participation in the Philippinesociety particularlyin thefield ofpolitics wherewomen'scontributionsaremost concealed.

  • Don't Tread on Me: Analyzing the Effects of the Tea Party on Voting
Don’t Tread on Me: Analyzing the Effects of the Tea Party on Voting Patterns of House Democrats Nicole DeMont Department of Communication Stanford University Advisor: Shanto Iyengar June 4, 2014 Abstract: The Tea Party reached its peak during the 2010 midterm elections and helped propel Republicans into the House of Representatives. While commentary has focused on the Republican Party’s shift to the right in response to the Tea Party movement, this paper examines the Tea Party’s influence on the Democratic Party. Using Washington Post data on party voting, I find that Democrats who beat Tea Party candidates in competitive races are 6.5 percent more likely to vote with the Democratic Party in the congressional session following the 2010 midterm election. This brings the likelihood of voting with the Party up to 89.4 percent on any given vote, compared to the baseline of 82.9 percent. Possible explanations for this Tea Party effect are presented. Amid the mounting concern over the national debt and the size of the federal government, the Tea Party movement emerged in early 2009. On Tax Day, April 15, 2009, in what would be one of the largest rallies the movement would see, Tea Party protests took place in over 750 cities across the country. President Obama’s proposed healthcare bill only fueled the growth and frustrations of the Tea Party movement. Although the Democratic leadership, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, had originally dismissed the movement, by August 2009 the Democrats were forced to pay attention.
