    Biography CHARLOTTE C. BAER, MD October 11, 1908 - August 15, 1973 Dr. Charlotte Baer was born into a medical family of Wiesbaden, Germany where her father was a practicing physician. He served with distinction in the medical corps of the German Army in World War I and was decorated for his services. It was perhaps natural that his daughter, an only child, would attend medical school. Her father saw to it that at an appropriate time in her life she also attended a cooking school, which, no doubt, accounted for her excellence as a cook, a trait which continued throughout her lifetime. In the European tradition, she attended medical schools throughout Europe and, more than that, lived for varying periods of time in countries other than Germany, giving her considerably more than an elementary knowledge of foreign languages. By the time of her arrival in the United States, she could converse not only in German, but also in English, French, and Italian. As the result of her medical studies, she received MD degrees from the Goethe Medical School Frankfurt am Main and the University of Berne, Switzerland. Throughout her college and medical school years, she found time to continue her enthusiasm for swimming and, in fact, became the intercollegiate breaststroke-swimming champion of Europe. By the time of the Berlin Olympics, she was not permitted to compete for the German team by the Nazi regime because of her Jewish heritage. She did, however, attend the Olympic Games in Berlin and recounted with great pleasure seeing Jesse Owens receive his three gold medals for track and field events withAdolph Hitler being among those present in the stadium.

This qualitative study examines the biographical constellations which have led to the decision to go on pilgrimage and therefore a typology of biographical motivations was developed. To achieve the aim of a typology, methods of qualitative research were used. The database consists of narrative interviews that were undertaken mostly with German pilgrims. The life stories of the pilgrims were analysed with Grounded Theory Methodology and made into a typology of five main types of pilgrims: balance pilgrim, crisis pilgrim, time-out pilgrim, transitional pilgrim, new start pilgrim.

    WEIMARPOLIS, Multi-disciplinary Journal of Urban Theory and Practice Vol. 1, Issue 2, pp. 53-64, ISSN 1869-1692 City of Displacement: On the unsteadiness of Berlin sites and sights1 Marc Schalenberg Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies Email: [email protected] Abstract This essay starts from the observation that the city of Berlin, throughout the 20th century, has been particularly prone to shift buildings in their entirety or in parts to other sites. These shiftings have to be seen against their specific backgrounds, such as war destruction, technological refurbishment, myth making, symbolic or memory politics by the respective political regime, resuming the “spirit” or name of a place for reasons of identification or marketing. But beyond those, the disposition to translocate can be understood as symptomatic in a city whose narratives, images and practices have been explicitly oriented towards the “new”, “unsteady” and “shiftable”. Attempts to remove material objects – not less than their meanings – are to be found in completely diverse political and cultural contexts. It seems an interesting challenge, therefore, to transcend the level of individual instances of displacements and try to test some concepts recently suggested in Urban Studies, like “habitus” or “intrinsic logic” for Berlin. BY ZAC STEGER Castles of a Dynasty— The Hohenzollern Route he year 2008 quietly marked ninety years since Kaiser Wilhelm II was forced to abdicate, bringing an end to World War I and TImperial Germany. As one of the oldest and most influential families in Europe, the Hohenzollerns had made the Kingdom of Prus- sia the most dominant German-speaking power and, under the guid- ance of Otto von Bismarck, united the various duchies, principalities, and kingdoms into the German Empire. Their story begins far from Berlin in the hills of Swabia along the Hohenzollernstrasse (Hohen- zollern Route), where two castles explore the history of one of Europe’s Top: Sigmaringen Castle. As such, the concept of Jewish community was a multivalent one in early modern Germany, with Jews forming communities that could be simultaneously local and regional. At the same time, Jews also constituted something of a broader community as Jews of the German Empire or, more simply, as early modern Jews who lived in many different parts of the world. Early modern Jewish identity, therefore, was at once local or regional and universal. 2 Early modern German Jews could define their communities in many different ways, based on geography, religious practices, history, communal governing structures, and even the broader politics (civic, territorial and imperial) in which the Jews themselves lived. Some early modern Jewish communities were well established with roots stretching back several hundred years; most communities, however, suffered significant ruptures and were either re-constituted after pogroms or expulsions or newly formed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
