  • God's Great Big Dysfunctional Family Tree: Sibling Rivalry
God's Great Big Dysfunctional Family Tree: Sibling Rivalry Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

  • Rachel and Leah
1 Rachel and Leah Like brother stories, a sister story is a narrative paradigm that construes the family primarily upon its horizontal axis. In a sister story, identity is determined and the narrative is defined by the sibling bond, as opposed to the more hierarchical parent-child relationship. As I note in my introduction, brother stories dominate the Bible. By the time we meet sisters Rachel and Leah in Genesis 29, Cain has killed Abel, Isaac has usurped Ishmael, and Jacob has deceived Esau. At the conclusion of Rachel and Leah’s sister story, brothers return to the spotlight as Joseph and his brothers become the focus of the narrative. The Bible’s prevailing trope of fraternal rivalry is essentially about patrilineal descent in which paired brothers fight for their father’s and for God’s blessing. Pairing the brothers helps focus the rivalry and makes clear who is the elder and who is the younger and who, therefore, should have the legitimate claim to their father’s property.1 There can be only one winner, one blessed heir in the patrilineal narratives. Naturally, a good story defies cultural expectations, and younger brothers, more often than not, claim their father’s and God’s blessings. Examining this motif in separate works, both Frederick E. Greenspahn and Jon D. Levenson observe how the status of the Bible’s younger sons reflects Israel’s status, and how their stories reflect Israel’s national story.2 Like Israel, younger sons have no inherent right to the status they acquire in the course of their narratives.3 And like Israel, younger sons must experience exile and humiliation to acquire their blessings.4 Isaac faces his father’s knife.

  • Sibling Rivalry
Sibling Rivalry Pentecost 23 T Genesis 4:1-151 T Pastor Petri When We Begin to Think We’re Too Special For God In the entertainment industry, entire families build empires. The Jacksons, Kardash- ians, and Osbournes, to name just a few. And where there are empires there is sibling rivalry. Of course, there’s nothing new about this. Take the example of two brother- actors, Edwin and John. Ed was highly acclaimed while younger John was panned by the critics. So bad was he that Edwin blackballed him from most theaters. Bitterly, John went South, where he joined an extremist group. Today, no one recalls Edwin Booth. But John Wilkes Booth? Today, too, sibling rivalry brings out the best and the worst. In the US, child abuse is comitted more often by siblings than adults. Annually, a third of all kids are battered by a brother or sister.2 Even in Bible times, Cain killed Abel. But why? [IT’S ROOTS] According to Scripture, the first assault took place over a religious issue! From the dawn of time, life had been tenuous. So the ancients sought to keep it in balance by ‘giv- ing back’ a portion of the land and livestock they took. ‘Sacrifice’ was a part of every world religion. Naturally, Adam saw God behind nature, so he would have taught his family to make their sacrifices to him. In fact, they were to give God the first of their yields. For no matter how empty the stomach or sparse the harvest, God came first. 3 With such a faith, Abel gave his first-fruits and pleased the Lord.4 Cain also made offerings but not his first yield.5 He needed the early crops to guarantee his survival, evidently deciding God could wait for the second harvest.

  • Joseph and His Brothers: Sibling Rivalry Revisited
JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS: SIBLING RIVALRY REVISITED JEFFREY M. COHEN Joseph, at the age of seventeen years, was a shepherd together with his brothers; He was a youth with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zil- pah…and Joseph brought back their evil report to his father (37:2). This disarmingly simple verse is replete with ambiguity. First, the difficulty of harmonising the two statements: ‘he was a shepherd together with his broth- ers,’ and ‘he was a youth (v’hu na’ar) with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah.’ ‘His brothers’ clearly refers to the principal sons - the offspring of Jacob and Leah - namely, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. Jo- seph and his younger brother, Benjamin,1 also enjoyed the status of principal sons - offspring of Jacob and his other full wife, Rachel - yet, the rivalry be- tween the two wives served as a catalyst for the bitterness that characterised the deteriorating relationship between their respective children, exacerbated by Joseph’s claim to leadership. ‘The sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah,’ on the other hand, were invested by birth with a lower familial and social status. The verse in question appears self-contradictory, therefore, as Joseph could not have been ‘together with his brothers’ of the Leah clan - enjoying the freedom of minding the flocks in the fields - while being at the same time ‘with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah,’ the family of the handmaids, whose centre of activity was around the homestead! Another ambiguity is provided by the phrase dibbatam ra’ah, literally, ‘their evil report,’ which leaves open the identity of the pronominal suffix, tam: Does it refer to evil perpetrated by ‘his brothers’ of the Leah clan, or by ‘the sons of the handmaids’, or by both groups in concert?2 Or does it refer to Jeffrey M.

  • DE-DEMONISING CAIN… and WONDERING WHY? Philip Culbertson Philip Culbertson Is the Author of Many Articles and Books on Psychology, the Bible and Theology
ARTICLES DE-DEMONISING CAIN… AND WONDERING WHY? Philip Culbertson Philip Culbertson is the author of many articles and books on psychology, the Bible and theology. He teaches at the School of Theology, The University of Auckland. Correspondence to Philip Culbertson: [email protected] Freud’s theory of sibling rivalry is cited relatively frequently by both biblical scholars and psychodynamic theorists as an explanation for Cain’s murder of Abel. But this seems inadequate to explain fully the dy- namics of the story. There seem to be two intergenerational processes at work in Cain’s violence that are often overlooked by biblical exegetes – maternal anger and paternal shaming. Yet this too seems overly- simplistic. A man – Cain – is so angry that he wants to murder someone. But who does he want to murder: the brother who seems to have stolen divine favour from him? The biological father whose shame he already carries, so that it erupts when he is shamed again? Or the great Father, the heavenly Lover with the ultimate power to bless or destroy? In New Zealand, where I live, we are presently subjected weekly to those reality shows about how to manage problem children. In each case, parents have seemingly uncontrollable children who act out their murderous rage toward their parents, and their envy of each other, and so a psychologist is sent to sort out the situation. But to whom does the psychologist turn her attention? Not to the children, but to the parents. In every case, the psychologist’s message is that children’s behaviour reflects their parents’ inability to parent adequately.

  • Sibling Rivalry and Religious Violence1 Parshat Toledot November 14, 2015 Rabbi Carl M
Sibling Rivalry and Religious Violence1 Parshat Toledot November 14, 2015 Rabbi Carl M. Perkins Temple Aliyah, Needham Wouldn’t it be nice if today’s Torah portion were about two random twin brothers who happened not to get along too well? Wouldn’t it be nice if today’s Torah portion simply set forth their story, and didn’t have any moral or other lessons to offer us? Wouldn’t it be great if it were only a human interest story, and had nothing to do with politics, nothing to do with ethnic groups or peoples or religious civilizations? Now, why do I say that? Well, it’s a troubling story, for several reasons. First of all, nobody comes across well in this story. No one. The father, Isaac, is blind in more ways than one. The mother, Rebecca, is purposeful, yes, but also devious and deceitful. Jacob is an active co-conspirator in cheating his brother out of his birthright. And Esau, who’s described as a hunter with a taste for wild game, falls, by the end of the parashah (Torah portion), into a murderous rage. In short, no one looks good. Second, we’re supposedly descended from these people. They are our ancestors. So perhaps we’re supposed to take this personally. What, therefore, does it say about us? But the fact is that, already at an early stage in Jewish history it was clear that this story isn’t just about two individuals named Jacob and Esau. It’s about two nations, the nation of Israel and its neighbor, the nation of Edom.

  • Sibling Rivalry: Ways to Help Children Manage It by Karen Stephens Warm, Supportive Sibling Attachment Is a Wonderful Parenting Goal
Sibling Rivalry: Ways to Help Children Manage It by Karen Stephens Warm, supportive sibling attachment is a wonderful parenting goal. After all, siblings are the people who will know each other longest. They hold an insider’s view of formative years that influence each other’s adult values, beliefs, and personality. But in every family, sibling rivalry crops up. In fact, reasonable sibling rivalry supports children’s social and emotional development. Through daily give and take, siblings learn to get along with others, to consider others’ perspectives, and to stand up for their own point of view. Below are parenting strategies to consider so children reap the benefits of a healthy sibling relationship — including the inevitable bumps of rivalry: • Root out suspected causes of rivalry. Observe children’s behavior to gain insight. Are children jockeying for family position? Are they trying to get adult attention or distract them? Are they fighting over a particular toy, friend, or relative? Does play deteriorate into fighting at a particular time of day, such as when the kids are hungry or tired? • Prevent rivalry causes as is reasonably possible. Reflect on answers to the above questions to help you plan prevention steps. • Role model constructive interactions. Make sure children observe you solving problems by talking and negotiating with a family member. • Create a cooperative, supportive home atmosphere. Include spaces where it’s easier to get along. Resist making • For preschooler and school-age children, create a “safe zone” where they can play without fear of younger toddler siblings destroying their toys or projects. unflattering • Firmly and consistently set and enforce boundaries for acceptable behavior.
