To update the application database, download the whole package of files – NawigacjaPDAmonitoring-lodzkie.zip and DataManager.zip – and follow the instruction.

DataManager allows for importing the newest version of the database for the NawigacjaPDAmonitoring program.

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move The PDA tourist navigation with the monitoring system allows you to ask another person about his or her position. The only thing you have to do is using the "Ask for the position" function and typing the number of a given person. If he or she agrees to send the coordinates, the position will be marked on the device's map.

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move If you want to feel safer, you can inform the Data Processing Centre about your own position. You can do that once, using the "Send information with my position" function, or set cyclic sending, which means that the Data Processing Centre will be automatically informed about your whereabouts every chosen period of time (minutes) or chosen distance (metres).

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move Application for mobile phones – the use

The most important functions of the "Monitoring" application are the following: ● checking the position of other members of the group – thanks to this function one participant of a trip can check the position of any of his or her friends using the map in the mobile phone. The function can be found under the tab "Group" and then "Options" and "Ask about the positions." ● monitoring a given person by other members of the group and the Data Processing Centre – the application sends automatic return messages with its position to other members of the group, who have sent a message asking about the position of a given user, providing that they are on the list of "friends." ● The application also allows for sending periodic messages with the position to the Data Processing Centre. After activating that function, the user's position during the trip is constantly monitored by the Data Processing Centre. The function can be activated under the tab "Settings" - "Send position every..." ● sending the SOS signal with information about the user's geographical location to the Data Processing Centre – this function can be found in every screen under the "Call Help" menu item.

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move The structure of the application

The "Monitoring" application consists of three main screens, that is: ● the "Group" screen, ● the "Events" screen, ● and the "Map" screen.

The user can switch between the screens using "left" and "right" buttons or the joystick.

The are two menu items displayed in every screen: ● "Settings," ● "Call help" (after choosing that option the application will send a text message with the user's geographic location to the Data Processing Centre).

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move The "Group" screen

The screen shows the list of friends from the mobile phone list of contacts. People from the list can send messages asking for the user's position and the application will send a return message with that position. In case when such a message is sent by a person who is not on the list, the application will not send the return message. The asking message will be ignored.

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move The "Group" screen

In the "Group" screen there are the following options:

● adding contacts to the list of contacts – to add a new friend to the list, enter "Options" – "Add the contact" and then find that person in your phone book. ● removing contacts from the list of contacts – to remove a given contact from the list of friends enter "Options" – "Remove the contact." ● asking for the position – to ask a friend for his or her position, enter "Options" – „Ask for the position;” then the programme will send an automatic text message to the given person asking for their position; ● displaying a friend's position on the map – to display the last known position of a friend on the map, enter "Options" – "Display on the map;" the device, having received the information about the user's location, will display it on the map.

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move The "Events" screen

The "Events" screen displays information concerning sent/received text messages, for example messages with one's own position sent to other people or similar messages received from them.

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move The "Map" screen

The "Map" screen shows the map on which there is marked the last known position of a given friend. To see the map, you need the access to the Internet. The map can be zoomed in and out after entering the menu and selecting "Options" – "Zoom in" or "Options" – "Zoom out."

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move "Settings" screen

The following options of the application can be configured in the "Settings" screen: ● SOS number – the telephone number of the Data Processing Centre where the SOS message will be sent to, ● Communication with the Data Processing Centre – the method of communication with the Data Processing Centre is selected (a text message or GPRS data package transmission), ● The Data Processing Centre Number – the telephone number which will be used to communicate with the Data Processing Centre via text messages.

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move "Settings" screen

Other elements of the application which the user can set on the screen are the following: ● The Data Processing Centre IP address – IP addresses, which will be used to communicate with the Data Processing Centre during the GPRS data package transmission (the first address is the main address of the Data Processing Centre, the others are emergency addresses); ● Show the position – this function allows for choosing one of two options: ● to everyone – after choosing this option the application "responds" to messages from users who are not on the list of friends in the "Group" screen, ● to friends – after choosing this option the application "responds" only to messages from users who are on the list of friend in the "Group" screen. Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move "Settings" screen

The "Settings" screen also allows for selecting methods of informing others about one's own position: ● Send the position every... – this option defines the period of time (minutes/seconds) after which the application sends new message with the user's position to the Data Processing Centre; after selecting this option the user's position is monitored by the Data Processing Centre; ● Send the position every... – this option defines the travelled distance (in metres) after which the application sends a new message with the user's position to the Data Processing Centre (for example, after setting 500 m as the distance, the application sends a message with the user's position to the Data Processing Centre every time the user travels 500 m).

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move The GPS tracker – description of functions

The GPS tracker allows for constant monitoring of a user on the trail, so he or she would be able to call help quickly by pushing one button.

Using the GPS tracker, every member of a trip can feel safer. The tracker allows for: constant monitoring of the user's geographic position (periodic messages with the user's changing position are sent to the Data Processing Centre). ● calling for help quickly by pushing the SOS button on the case of the tracker.

The GPS trackers can be rented in selected information centres along the Łódź Horse Trail.

Three diodes on the case inform the user about the current state of the device:

Central mobile system of monitoring tourists on the move The GPS tracker – description of functions

The red diode indicates that the device is turned on.

The blue diode indicates the state of the GPS module: ● blinking – when the diode is turned on for 0,1 second and turned off for about 3 seconds, it means that the device has determined the GPS position correctly (that is, the GPS has been fixed), ● blinking – when the diode is turned on for 1 second and turned off for 2 seconds, it means that the device has not determined the GPS position (that is, the GPS has not been fixed).

The green GSM diode indicates the state of the GSM module: ● blinking – when the diode is turned on for 0,1 second and turned off for about 3 seconds, it means that the device has been connected to the GSM network correctly. ● blinking – when the diode is turned on for 1 second and turned off for 2 seconds, it means that the device has not been connected to the GSM network.

Before every use, the tourist should make sure that the device is charged. It can be charged through the mini-USB port on the right side of the tracker. The battery holds 13 hours. The maximum charge time is 3 hours. You should also check whether you have enough money on your account to send text messages and GPRS data packages.
