Muhammad Speaking of the Messiah: Jesus in the Hadīth Tradition
MUHAMMAD SPEAKING OF THE MESSIAH: JESUS IN THE HADĪTH TRADITION A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Fatih Harpci (May 2013) Examining Committee Members: Prof. Khalid Y. Blankinship, Advisory Chair, Department of Religion Prof. Vasiliki Limberis, Department of Religion Prof. Terry Rey, Department of Religion Prof. Zameer Hasan, External Member, TU Department of Physics © Copyright 2013 by Fatih Harpci All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Much has been written about Qur’ānic references to Jesus (‘Īsā in Arabic), yet no work has been done on the structure or formal analysis of the numerous references to ‘Īsā in the Hadīth, that is, the collection of writings that report the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. In effect, non-Muslims and Muslim scholars neglect the full range of Prophet Muhammad’s statements about Jesus that are in the Hadīth. The dissertation’s main thesis is that an examination of the Hadīths’ reports of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward ‘Īsā will lead to fuller understandings about Jesus-‘Īsā among Muslims and propose to non-Muslims new insights into Christian tradition about Jesus. In the latter process, non-Muslims will be encouraged to re-examine past hostile views concerning Muhammad and his words about Jesus. A minor thesis is that Western readers in particular, whether or not they are Christians, will be aided to understand Islamic beliefs about ‘Īsā, prophethood, and eschatology more fully. In the course of the dissertation, Hadīth studies will be enhanced by a full presentation of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward Jesus-‘Īsā. -
Mary in Early Christianity and Islam
Religious Inquiries Volume 6, Number 11, June 2017, pp. 37-49 Mary in Early Christianity and Islam Morteza Rezazadeh 1 Received: 09-01-2017 / Accepted: 29-06-2017 This article explores the life and importance of Mary in Islam and Christianity, aiming at clarifying the criteria for which Mary has been revered in each tradition. It will be shown that Mary in Christianity is almost merely important because she was the mother of Jesus, while the Muslim reverence for her is based on her own noble characteristics. From the Muslim perspective, even if Mary had not been Jesus’ mother, she would have been a prominent figure and a great example for believers. Keywords: Mary, Jesus, Christian-Muslim dialogue. Introduction As a highly respected figure in both Islamic and Christian traditions, Mary can be a source for reconciliation and can open doors for a more accurate knowledge about her as the mother of Jesus Christ, as well as understanding the position of women in the two traditions. Given the high respect for her in both Islam and Christianity, she 1. PhD Candidate in Comparative Religions and Mysticism, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran ([email protected]). 40 / Religious Inquiries can also be a good ground for interfaith dialogue, as well as an important way to fix the place of women in both traditions. The important role of Mary is unknown to many. This paper is a humble effort to investigate the life and importance of Mary in the light of early Christian and Muslim sources. The aim is to clarify the criteria for which Mary has been revered in Islamic and Christian early sources. -

FRANK DUFF: A LIFE STORY PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Finola Kennedy | 224 pages | 01 Jul 2011 | Continuum Publishing Corporation | 9781441167477 | English | New York, United States Frank Duff: A Life Story PDF Book Along with a group of Catholic women and Fr. Duff, having concern for people he saw as materially and spiritually deprived, got the idea to picket Protestant soup kitchens as they were giving aid in the form of food and free accommodation at hostels for not attending Catholic services. We use cookies to ensure that we give you the best experience on our website. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Dr Kennedy's research highlights how the Dublin clergy, indifferent to spirituality, feared an organisation which dared to promote mixed membership of men and women. I have no fear of plurality in school patronage where parents desire it. At the same time he felt that trust in lay people should also be accompanied by intense formation of lay people in spirituality and in theology. That said, I believe that the Catholic school retains its particular place which must be fostered. For information on how we process your data, read our Privacy Policy. He served as private secretary to Michael Collins. He retired from the Civil Service in to devote all of his time to the Legion of Mary. In July , the cause of his canonisation was introduced by Cardinal Desmond Connell. Quote of the Day Above all the vision of Frank Duff concerning the priest and laity can only be understood in the context of evangelisation and the salvation of souls. -
The Mystical Body of Christ in the Spirituality of the Legion of Mary March 2011 by Fr
The Mystical Body of Christ in the Spirituality of the Legion of Mary March 2011 By Fr. Bede McGregor O.P. Spiritual Director to the Legion of Mary The prayer for the beatification of the Servant of God Frank Duff begins as follows: 'God Our Father, You inspired your servant Frank Duff with a profound insight into the mystery of your Church, the Body of Christ and of the place of Mary the Mother of Jesus in this mystery.' There can be no doubt about the truth of the assessment of Frank Duff in this prayer. He loved the Church with his whole being and lived his life in and for her. His vision of the Church was pivotal for him and the Legion of Mary which he founded. For him the Church is a Person. It is the Risen Lord living and acting in his Body the Church. It is in and through and with the Church that he and we legionaries find Jesus. This is truly one of the deepest insights of his life and it is the central truth in the doctrinal and practical life of the Legion. Inseparably connected to this insight is his total conviction concerning the place of Mary in this mystery of the Body of Christ. There are many different images of the Church in both the old and new testaments, in the time of prophecy and in the time of fulfilment. But the image that meant most to Frank Duff and the Legion is the image of the Body of Christ. I have not found in any of his writings or spoken words concepts like the institutional church or the charismatic church so popular in much post- Conciliar discussion. -

From the Pastor's Desk
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK THE LEGION OF MARY-THE BLESSED MOTHER’S ARMY… There is an old story told about a priest who was greeting his parishioners after mass one sunny Easter morning. He saw a couple that was very friendly but whom he had not seen in church for months, in fact since Christmas! So the priest said, “Listen- I’m happy to see both of you but you need to join the army of the Lord!” The wife said, “Oh Father, we are in God’s army already!” “Then how come I only see you at Christmas and Easter?” The pastor inquired. The husband chimed in, “Father, we are in the Secret Service!” Perhaps many people are in that service since Mass attendance is way down in the Catholic Church. Perhaps some people would not like to think of the Church as an army and it’s members as “Soldiers of Jesus Christ,” but its true to say that as Catholics we are engaged in a battle to save our souls from our enemy the devil. A couple of years ago, I received a book with an interesting title, the title? Onward Catholic Soldier. It’s all about spiritual warfare and how prayer, fasting and right conduct is our armor as followers of Jesus Christ. It’s something interesting to think about. Since Vatican Two, the Church has emphasized that every one of us-not just the priests and nuns have a vocation and that vocation is to holiness of life. Holiness involves not only saying prayers as important as they are. -
