    GOLF MEMORABILIA A ROYAL TRIBUTE The oldest club in the country is showing off a new look that pays tribute to the pioneers of South African golf. By Brendan Barratt In 2016, US website Golf Advisor provided a ‘global’ list of 15 must-visit spots for golf memorabilia lovers. While the intent was honourable, it was far from a comprehensive register and, somewhat predictably, despite the sport’s European origins a few hundred years before the game made its way across the Atlantic, this collection of venues is disappointingly US-centric. Conspicuous by its absence among this list of museums, clubs, shops and even a pub – The Dunvegan in St Andrews – is arguably the greatest collection of golfing memorabilia of all, located at the British Golf Museum in St Andrews, Scotland. Another historically significant – and rather valuable – golfing collection omitted from the list can be found at the oldest golf club in England, London’s Royal Blackheath. The club recently sold the most famous painting from its collection for the equivalent of R13-million in order to purchase the land on which the course is situated. Closer to home, Royal Cape Golf Club, in Cape Town, has launched its newly curated and refurbished collection of historical golfing memorabilia. The project, driven by former club captains Peter Sauerman and David Leslie, showcases the history of the country’s oldest golf club and its important role in the origins of the sport in South Africa. It is an honour to be delivering my State of the Province Address in front of this community, and it is a special honour to be delivering it in this venue. The Rocklands Civic Centre is no stranger to historic events. It was here that the United Democratic Front rose up against the evils of Apartheid. It was here that people of all walks united behind the idea of a democratic South Africa in which everyone would be free. Over the years, thousands of people have entered through those doors- for community programs, important discussions, for weddings and celebrations. There is no better place than this place, a Provincial heritage site, for us to host this historic SOPA - the first SOPA outside of the Provincial Parliament, right here in one of our communities. So, let’s get down to the business of this house, which is for me to reflect on what we have delivered to date, and to lay out our delivery priorities for the future, to our audience here today, and across the province.

    CONFORMITY AND CONFLICT: AFRIKANER NATIONALIST POLITICS IN SOUTH AFRICA, 1948-1961 by John Lazar Balllol College Oxford University Michaelmas Term, 1987 One of the principal themes of this thesis is that it is incorrect to treat M Afrikanerdom" as a monolithic, unified ethnic entity. At the time of its election victory in 1948, the National Party (NP) represented an alliance of various factions and classes, all of whom perceived their Interests in different ways. Given, too, that black resistance to exploitation and oppression increased throughout the 1950s, apartheid ideology cannot be viewed as an immutable, uncontested blueprint, which was stamped by the NP on to a static political situation. The thesis is based on four main strands of research. It is grounded, firstly, in a detailed analysis of Afrikaner social stratification during the 1950s. The political implications of the rapid increase in the number of Afrikaners employed in "white-collar" occupations, and the swift economic expansion of the large Afrikaner corporations, are also examined. The second strand of research examines the short-term political problems which faced the nationalist alliance in the years following its slim victory in the 1948 election. Much of the NP's energy during its first five years in office was spent on consolidating its precarious hold on power, rather than on the imposition of a "grand" ideological programme. Simultaneously, however, intense discussions - and conflicts - concerning the long-term implications, goals and justifications of apartheid were taking place amongst Afrikaner intellectuals and clergymen. A third thrust of the thesis will be to examine the way in which these conflicts concretely shaped the ultimate direction of apartheid policy and ideology.
