The Heindel-Steiner Connection THE HEINDEL-STEINER CONNECTION PREFACE This study has been made with a view towards recapturing something of the bold and vibrant eclecticism that characterized the spiritual ambience of the Rosicrucian Fellowship during its first decade of existence. While the study demonstrates many points of affinity between the teachings of Max Heindel and Rudolf Steiner, it is emphatically not our intention to try to make converts to Anthroposophy, the term Steiner later used to designate his body of teachings. Rather do we believe that Christ-emulating, self- forgetting service, an ideal and practice tirelessly stressed by Max Heindel, is the proper focus for the Western spiritual aspirant. The pursuit of knowledge is subsumed by and ordered to the practice of this service. Nevertheless, in the application of supersensible truths to our daily affairs—in education, medicine, art, farming, and social organization, to name a few areas—Steiner’s science of spirit shows that Rosicrucian wisdom is eminently practical and ameliorative. Fellowship members can admit to considerable room for development in this direction; that is, we are called to make our higher knowledge fruitful for and directly serviceable to the needs of the four Kingdoms of nature evolving on this planet. All organizations face the prospect of entropy, of becoming ingrown, increasingly conservative, tradition-bound, preoccupied with rules, dogmatic and rigid—until they are no longer able to respond to their founding impulse. The Rosicrucian Fellowship needs to remain sensitive and compliant to the creative impulses of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of living Truth. Our earnest hope is that this study will help counter the tendency to organizational entropy by promoting a recovery of the open receptive conditions that prevailed at the time of the Fellowship’s inception. There is even a weekly farmers market held in the USDA parking lot in Washington, DC.2 The Roots of the True Organic Vision To see how this vision grew into the modern organic movement it may be helpful to review American and European history with this topic in mind. While I read many of the ‘classics’ of organic thought during my early years in Vermont, I didn’t fit the pieces together until my involve- ment deepened and I began teaching about the subject. The excursion that follows offers my own interpretation and selection of events and actors that has helped me to place my own experience in its historical context. Many people assume that the organic movement had its start with Rachel Carson and the environmental movement of the sixties that inspired farmers to “just say no” to pesticides. The activist uprisings of the 1960s certainly gave rise to the modern organic movement, but the birth of what became known as organic farming really occurred in response to the first widespread use of synthetic fertilizers in the early part of the 20th century. Most of the foundational organic innovators came from Europe, where concerns about the effects of using synthesized chemicals to fertilize crops sprouted a short time after they started being promoted. Around the end of World War I the munitions manufacturers found themselves with large stockpiles of explosives on hand.

THE ROSICRUCIAN FELLOWSHIP Qualities that Make It Unique Inquirers typically request a comparison between the Fellowship and another organization. Other groups may change from year to year, but it is possible to list certain qualities which together make The Rosicrucian Fellowship unique, even among organizations that use the word, Rosicrucian, in their names. The Rosicrucian Fellowship: 1. Has never been affiliated with any other organization. 2. Does not charge for its teachings. There are no dues, fees, or solicitations. The work is carried on by means of freewill offerings. 3. Emphasizes esoteric Christianity and the devotional/heart path as well as the mind path, its goal being to achieve a perfect balance between head and heart. 4. By its esoteric interpretations of the Bible, sheds light on the Christian mysteries, provides insight into Christ’s true mission and His gospel of love, and prepares students for universal brotherhood. “That Christ Jesus is our ideal” is integral to the Rosicrucian Fellowship program. 5. Recognizes that as differentiated Spirits in God we are reborn again and again in bodies of increasing efficiency on the physical plane to learn the lessons incident to material existence, and to unfold our latent divine potentialities into dynamic powers. 6. Promotes self-forgetting love and service; the ideal is that the teachings be used to help others, not to serve one’s self. 7. Studies principles of right living and practices spiritual healing. The healing work is carried on mainly by work in the invisible planes during the patients’ sleep.

    Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, Architects of Anthroposophy Dr John Paull [email protected] A century ago, on the 23rd of May 1912, the winning design of Canberra was announced. Soon after, two talented Chicago architects set sail for Australia. Their plan for Australia’s national capital, already named Canberra but at the time merely an empty paddock, had won first prize in an international competition which attracted 137 entries. The winning prize money for the design was a modest £1750 (McGregor, 2009). Walter Burley Griffin (1876-1937) and Marion Mahony (1871-1961) were married in the year preceding the win. Marion had nagged Walter to enter the competition, “What’s the use of thinking about a thing like this for ten years if when the time comes you don’t get it done in time!” She pointed out the practicalities: “Perhaps you can design a city in two days but the drawings take time and that falls on me” (Griffin, 1949, volume IV p.294). After the win was announced, Walter declared: “I have planned it not in a way that I expected any government in the world would accept. I have planned an ideal city - a city that meets my ideal of a city of the future” (New York Times, 1912). Marion chronicled events of their life together in a typewritten four- volume memoir of over 1600 pages (Griffin, 1949). Her memoir documents their life together and liberally reproduces personal correspondence between them and their associates. Her unpublished manuscript reveals the intensity with which she and Walter embraced the thoughts of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) and anthroposophy.

Rudolf Steiner founded the Experimental Circle of Anthroposophic Farmers and Gardeners at Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) in 1924. The task for the Experimental Circle was to test Steiner’s ‘hints’ for a new and sustainable agriculture, to find out what works, and to publish and tell the world. Ehrenfried published his book Bio-Dynamic Farming and Gardening in New York in 1938, fulfilling Steiner’s directive. In the interval, 1924-1938, 39 individual Americans joined the Experimental Circle . They were the pioneers of biodynamics and organics in USA, and finally their names and locations are revealed. Of the 39 members, three received copies of the Agriculture Course in both German and English, while other copies were shared (n=6). Of the 35 Agriculture Courses supplied to American Experimental Circle Members, over half were numbered copies of the German edition (n=20), and the rest were the English edition (n=15). A majority of members were women (n=20), along with men (n=17), and undetermined (n=2). Members were from 11 states: New York (n=18), New Jersey (n=5), Ohio (n=4), Hawaii (n=3), Connecticut (n=2), Missouri (n=2), California (n=1), Florida (n=1), Maine (n=1), Maryland (n=1), and Pennsylvania (n=1).

The first religions in my sample, Invitation to life and Christian Science, are Christian. The others are not: Antoinism stems from spiritism, Universal Alliance from Georges Roux’s followers and Scientology’s doctrines seem to belong to esotericism. For this reason, my interest in spiritual therapy was oriented towards esotericism, in order to assess the case of therapy and psyche within this “form of thought”. Of course, esotericism is not a healing religion since it is not a religion.
