Many hands lent themselves, strumming autoharps and bowing strings, accompanying the lilting, soaring voice that can not be mistaken. Mirah’s whole new batch of songs stands solid and un-afraid; pianos and drums, truth and protest. If her first album, you think it’s like this but really it’s like this (KLP112) snuck up and surprised you, then her second album Advisory Committee (KLP135) stunned you with cannon fire. Now sit back and relax as C’mon Miracle washes over you and etches its subtle ways into your psyche. Mirah recorded most of C’mon Miracle at Dub Narcotic studio with Phil Elverum and Calvin Johnson. Lori Goldston (of The Black Cat Orchestra), Emily Kingan (of The Haggard and Sextional), Khaela Maricich (The Blow), Aaron Hartman (OTR), Jason Anderson (Wolf Colonel) and Nora Davidson and Themba Lewis (of Liarbird) are among the other players and helpmates who knew just how to coax the right sounds out of Olympia’s late summer and make this album such a whirl of audio pleasure. -

ZONE A: Religion/Family This section of the exhibition features a key work expanding on Ron Athey’s family and religious upbringing as a would-be Pentacostal minister: his 2002 live multimedia performance installation Joyce, which is named after Athey’s mother. It also includes elements from Athey’s archive relating to Joyce—including two costumes from the live performance—and his life within and beyond his fundamentalist origin family (such as unpublished writings from his period of recovery in the 1980s, and the numerous flyers advertising fundamentalist revivals he attended). The section is organized around materials that evoke the mix of religiosity and dysfunctional (sexualized and incestuous) family dynamics Athey experienced as a child and wrote about in some of his autobiographical writings that are included in the catalogue, including Mary Magdalene Footwashing Set (1996), which was included in a group show at Western Project in Los Angeles in 2006 and in the Invisible Exports Gallery “Displaced Person” show in 2012, a former gallery just around the corner from Participant Inc.’s location. -

Ryan Leach is a skateboarder who grew up in Los Angeles and Ventura County. Like Belinda Carlisle and Lorna Doom, he graduated from Newbury Park High School. Lead singer, guitarist, and figurehead Jeffrey Lee Pierce fits in easily with Tthe genius songwriting of Arthur Lee (Love), Chris Hillman (Byrds), and John Doe and Exene (X). Unfortunately, neither he nor his band achieved the notoriety of his fellow luminary Angelinos. From 1979 to 1996, Jeffrey manned the Gun Club ship through thick and mostly thin. Understandably, the initial Fire of Love and Miami lineup of Ward Dotson (guitar), Rob Ritter (bass), Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals/ guitar) and Terry Graham (drums) remains the most beloved; setting the spooky, blues-punk template for future Gun Club releases. At the time of its release, Fire of Love was heralded by East Coast critics as one of the best albums of 1981. -

These 11 songs are only a sampling of all new songs performed by Elverum in a two-week tour of Japan in early 2003. After spending five months in isolation in Norway, Elverum emerged with a cache of heart-felt and reflective songs reminiscent of The Glow Part II. A drastic change from 2002’s epic tale of Mount Eerie, we find Elverum playing acoustic pop songs with the bare minimum backing of instrumentation. Kyle Field (Little Wings) and Calvin Johnson (Dub Narcotic Sound System) join Elverum on “Universe Conclusion” and “I Love You So Much.” “Climb Over” features The Mools as the backing band. Julia Sweeney bio, 2018 Julia Sweeney is an actress, comedian, writer and film director. She is 58 years old and was born in the U.S. in Spokane, Washington. She’s appeared on numerous film and television shows. She’s best known for her original comedic monologues and stand up. Julia spent four and a half years on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1994. Her most popular recurring character was Pat, an androgynous person who caused people to become confused. She also wrote and starred in a film about Pat entitled It’s Pat! This film had a dismal reception at the box office and was universally panned by critics. That was basically the end of Pat, although the character still seems to be part of American popular culture. After Julia left Saturday Night Live, she became most well known as a monologist. Her first one-person show was entitled God Said Ha! which was about a terrible year when she and her brother were both diagnosed with cancer. This show was a tremendous success; it played in several U.S. cities and on Broadway at the Lyceum Theater in 1997. The audio of the show was nominated for a Grammy. Quentin Tarantino produced a film version of the show, which Julia directed. It still plays on cable. Julia’s second monologue was entitled In the Family Way. It chronicled Julia’s quest to become a mother and her eventual adoption of a child as a single person. She did theater runs of this show in New York off-Broadway and in Los Angeles. -

Reiff, Chair This dissertation provides a new perspective to apply in the study of metropolitan development at the turn of 20th Century America. It reveals a group of entrepreneurial men whose collective contribution to the real estate industry had just as much to do with shaping urban spaces as the wealthy, more established, and power-wielding elites that are often credited with such development. Los Angeles is the case study of the dissertation because it underwent such a dramatic transformation during this time period from a small California city to the largest and most important metropolitan region on the West Coast. Key to its growth and expansion were the members of the Los Angeles Realty Board. After organizing in 1903, the members of the board sought to bring legitimacy to their profession, encourage cooperation and fellowship among real estate men, and use their collective power to create a more dynamic business environment for their industry. -

West Hollywood, California’s go-to-guide to the City’s Three Districts The Sunset Strip After decades of notoriety, the Sunset Strip continues to blaze its own path as a world-famous cultural landmark, setting trends in music, hotels, dining and shopping. This most famous stretch of Sunset Boulevard begins and ends in West Hollywood, and like the city it calls home, it is constantly breaking new ground and reinventing itself. Though it’s often been portrayed in movies like Sunset Boulevard, Almost Famous and Rock of Ages, visitors say that nothing compares to seeing the Sunset Strip up close and in person. Bordered on the west by Beverly Hills and on the east by Hollywood, this iconic 1.5 mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard features an array of world-class hotels, nightclubs, restaurants, shops and spas. Through the years, the Sunset Strip has seen it all, starting with the seedy glitz of the 1920s, when Prohibition fueled the rise of nightclubs and speakeasies. Because West Hollywood was not yet an incorporated city, this strip of Sunset Boulevard was lightly policed, making the Strip the perfect playground for the rebellious denizens of early Hollywood. By the 1940s, swanky nightclubs like Ciro’s, Trocadero and Mocambo reigned supreme, attracting A-list celebrity clientele like Marilyn Monroe along with less savory characters like gangster Bugsy Siegel, who called the Strip his stomping grounds. In the 1960s, the Sunset Strip became the major gathering place for the counterculture movement in Los Angeles. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison were fixtures of the Strip and the surrounding West Hollywood landscape. -
