Emergence of the State Constitution Is the Duty of All Citizens of Myanmar Naing-Ngan Subhasita ca ya vaca, to have words well spoken; this is the way to auspiciousness. Established 1914 Volume XI, Number 335 11th Waning of Tabaung 1365 ME Tuesday, 16 March, 2004 As good sons of the State, serve the interests of the people The Tatmadaw at present is endeavouring to ensure peace and stability of the State for the people to live with peace of mind and earn their living unhindered. In addition, it is working hard to raise the per capita income annually and develop the national economy. In every part of the nation, its endeavours are for the annual growth of the gross domestic product as it will lead to improving the life expectancy and raising the health, education and social standard of the people. Moreover, its building of economic and social infrastructures including roads, bridges and dams in all sectors in every direction of the nation is not only for the present, but also for the posterity. Here, I would like to say that as we are good sons of the State, we are working in the interest of the people. Vol. 14, No. 2 June 2015 ISSN 1811 7023 Police torture & crackdown on protests in changing Burma Opposing the Rule of Law The rule of law is a political ideal today endorsed and promoted worldwide. Or is it? In a major contribution to the field, Nick Cheesman argues that Myanmar is a country in which the rule of law is 'lexically present but semantically absent'. Charting ideas and practices from British colonial rule through military dictatorship to the present day, Cheesman calls upon political and legal theory to explain how and why institutions animated by a concern for law and order oppose the rule of law. Empirically grounded in both Burmese and English sources, including criminal trial records and wide ranging official documents, Opposing the Rule of Law offer the first significant study of courts in contemporary Myanmar sheds new light on the politics of courts during dark times and sharply illuminates the tension between the demand for law and the imperatives of order.
