Interestingly, this individual has dark and pale tailbands that appear equal in width, the most commonly held criteria for Besra. However, other features such as short tail, long primary projection, weak mesial stripe and weak chest markings point to Japanese Sparrowhawk. A good reminder that identification cannot be based on a single feature alone. Summary for migrant species: October 2017 is probably the least remarkable October on record, with only 6 migrant species recorded (we usually record around 9 species in October). For the second year in a row, there were no records of the Black Baza in October, not that they no longer come to Singapore, just that they arrive only later in the year. The bulk of the 70 migrants recorded were made up by the 33 Oriental Honey Buzzards, and 25 Japanese Sparrowhawks. There were 8 Chinese Sparrowhawks, including one female spotted regularly at Ang Mo Kio. Two Western Ospreys were recorded at the Kranji- Sungei Buloh area and one adult Peregrine Falcon was recorded at Kent Ridge on the 3rd. Sembawang, which derived its name from the Mesua ferruginea or the Sembawang tree, has also been home to people from all walks of life – from seafaring villagers who dwelt in kampongs; Asian dockyard workers from Kerala and Hongkong who lived at quarters along Canberra Road; to British naval officers who stayed in black-and-white houses – adding to the area’s rich history and cultural diversity. 2 These lesser-known stories of Sembawang’s naval history and diverse communities will be showcased in the National Heritage Board’s (NHB) new Sembawang Heritage Trail. The trail features 31 trail sites and nine heritage trail markers, which invite trail-goers to explore Singapore’s northern coastal town from when it was first mentioned in maps in the early-1800s, to the decades before and after World War II.     ANNUAL REPORT 2013/2014 1 Grow With Us The seeds of Singapore’s greening campaign were sown in 1963, when former Prime Minster Mr Lee Kuan Yew planted a Mempat tree at Farrer Circus. Fifty years later on 16 June 2013, he set a Rain Tree sapling firmly in the ground at Holland Village Park, marking the start of a series of activities to commemorate our greening journey. As we look back at the greening efforts over the past 50 years, we can see the dramatic transformation that has taken place in Singapore’s landscape as we transitioned from those nascent years to a Garden City and now to our City in a Garden. Going forward, we will continue to be guided by the vision of our pioneering leaders to make Singapore a distinctive and attractive place to live in. We will continue to build on the foundations that have been laid over the past five decades and we invite everyone – individuals, communities and corporations – to Grow With Us.
