JULY/AUGUST 2006 4-H NEWS PAGE 12 New York City Career Exploration Trip April 17th – 20th Wyoming County participants: Greg Cox, Ariana and Sara Berkemeier Article and photos submitted by Sara Berkemeier

Even though it was primarily the fashion aspect that drove me to apply for the New York City 4-H award trip, I discovered that New York City has a lot more to offer than just fashion. It was a long bus ride to NYC but it was worth it. After we arrived we were able ride on the Staten Island Ferry and see the Statue of Liberty. We also took a bus tour of the city and after dinner we went to the Top of The Rock (Observation Deck on the 70th floor of Rockefeller Center). You could see all of NYC from the Top of The Rock, and even though it was dark, the city was full of lights and was really beautiful. The rest of the trip went so fast that it seemed like if I blinked, it would all be over. We had the opportunity to see two Broadway shows: Jersey Boys and Hairspray. They were both great shows! While we were there, we were also able to see Central Park, Times Square, Ground Zero, the Radio City Music Hall (where the Rockettes got their start), the Hilton Hotel, Ulysses S. Grant’s memorial, and so much more! We even went on three tours of television stations. While in the city, we also saw a lot of celebrities! We saw two American Idol contestants on different days. Unfortunately, I am not an American Idol fan, so I couldn’t tell you who they were - all I can tell you is that I saw them. Many of us believe we saw Jay Leno and “Sayid” from Lost. I personally saw Joy from The View while I was in a Border’s bookstore, and I even got an autograph. Our group had a chance to be on the Today Show, and many of us got our pictures taken with Katie Couric. There was lots of shopping to be done! We visited Little Italy and Chinatown, words cannot express how much I enjoyed Chinatown. We also had the opportunity to shop at Macy’s and other shops along 34th street. The food in NYC was amazing too! Every morning we went to a little place called The Variety Café for breakfast New York style. Their bagels and breakfast sandwiches were to die for. The highlight of NYC food was the pizza - it was great. As you can see, there was something for everyone on this award trip. We all had so much fun and we became educated in the ways of NYC. If you ever decide to apply for an award trip, I strongly suggest this one!

Take the Rural YOUth Visioning Survey And help influence the direction of your community…

What does your community look like? Can’t wait to finish your education and get out of town? Are you thinking that your future doesn’t include returning to where you grew up? Why? What’s happening that makes you want to leave? Either way, do you have ideas for what would make your community better?? ...Of course you do! We’re looking for young people interested in telling us about what’s happening in their community. Won’t you please take a few minutes to complete this survey so that we have a better idea of what youth consider important when it comes to community? We want to know what you like, what you don’t like, and what programs and services you want to see in your community. With your input, the information collected will be used to help make your community a better place to live, work, and enjoy. This survey is all about having your voice heard as a young person living in rural New York! Adults have already begun to discuss these very issues. Don’t you think it’s about time they hear from YOUth? To take the youth survey and make your voice heard, for more information on what the Rural Visioning Project is about, and to see what other youth who participated in a visioning session at the 4-H STARR conference said about their communities, please go to: http://hosts.cce.cornell.edu/rnyi/ and follow the links on the left of the page!

JULY/AUGUST 2006 4-H NEWS PAGE 27 ATV Riding Tips for Safe Summer Fun

Memorial Day weekend signals the start of summer fun for many people, a time for enjoyable outdoor activities such as riding ATVs (all-terrain vehicles). But ATV safety should never be taken lightly. According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 125,500 people have been seriously injured in ATV-associated accidents since 1982, and more than 5,700 people have been killed. Children are at the highest risk, with the under-16 age group accounting for more than 31% of injuries in 2003. The 4-H Community ATV Safety Program recommends these tips for ATV safety:

• SELECT the right model ATV. Make sure it is right for age, size, strength and skill level. Kids under age 16 years should not be riding ATVs with engine size over 90cc and under age 12 should not be riding an ATV with an engine size 70cc or greater. • PROTECT your body. At a minimum, always wear a helmet, face shield or goggles, long sleeved shirt, gloves, long pants and leather boots. The helmet should be designed for motorcycle use, properly fitted and comply with current US Department of Transportation safety standards. • RESPECT yourself, proper use of roads and trails, other people and laws. The top risk factors involving ATV accidents include riding double and riding on pavement. Never carry a passenger or hitch a ride. Ride only on designated trails, never on or alongside paved roads. Be courteous to hikers, bikers, cars and other ATV operators. Supervise children riding ATVs at all times. Learn and follow your state’s ATV operation laws and read the manufacturer’s warning label on every 4-H Days at Six Flags machine. Darien Lake • INSPECT your vehicle. Animals must be free of all contagious diseases such as ringworm, warts, mange, orf, respiratory infections and contagious hoof infections. Warts must be removed and healed prior to coming to fair. 3. Animals must be uniquely identified. Usually this means a tattoo, tag in ear, brand or ear notches. Horse pictures and sketches with all identifiable markings should be signed by the attending veterinarian. 4. For New York State animals, certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) is required. This is a health chart (Form A161). The CVI is often referred to as “health papers” or “health certificate.” This chart must be completed on or after May 1st of the current year. All animals, even those under 3 months of age, need to be identified and included on the health chart. 5. Tuberculosis testing on New York State cattle will not be required. 6. A signed written statement from the attending veterinarian is required as proof of vaccination. 7. Cattle must be vaccinated against Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (shipping fever, etc.) if they are 3 months of age or older. Shots should be administered at least 15 days prior to the fair. Young animals receiving their first series of shots, should receive 2 shots at least 3 weeks apart. After the 1st year animals can receive just one shot. Depending on the vaccine it usually is good for 1 year from the date of vaccination. Vaccination must include immunization against bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), bovine respiratory syncytial vitals (BRSV), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis(IBR), and Parainfluenza(PI3). 8. Observe milk and meat drug/vaccine labeled withholding times. (Usually it is 21 days required between giving a rabies shot and slaughter and 21 days on the Bovine Respiratory shots.) 9. Out of state animals coming to the fair must satisfy import health and test requirements for that species. The interstate health chart is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance with regard to entrance into New York State. Import test requirements are different for different states, based on diseases that are found in that state. For more detailed information contact Suzy Berry at N. Y .S. Department of Ag and Markets (518) 457-3971. 10. Vaccinations and Health charts will not be required on meat animals to be slaughtered prior to the fair. 11. If any sheep or goat within a flock shows evidence of Soremouth, the whole flock must be removed from the fairgrounds. 12. Sheep and goats must be identified with an official scrapie tag or tattoo. In order to prevent scrapie contamination, any sheep or goat showing any uterine drainage will be sent home.
