Administrative Information Provenance The German Captured Documents Collection consists of material captured by American military forces in Germany after World War II. In 1982 the Library agreed to return all captured German material in the Manuscript Division that the Bundesarchiv of the Federal Republic of Germany wanted for its holdings or for transfer to other German archives. German archivists identified the material to be returned and underwrote the cost of filming by the Library's Photoduplication Service. The collection was filmed in stages over the next few years and the last installment was filmed in 1991. Some German Captured Documents Collection 2 original materials remain in the Manuscript Division because they were not wanted by the Bundesarchiv. As each installment was filmed, the originals were sent to the Bundesarchiv in Koblenz. Much material from the Manuscript Division and other Library collections was returned in earlier years. Machinery was established by 1951 to return any collections or individual publications that belonged to legitimate private organizations or governmental agencies. Many collections of books and serials were returned as early as 1948 to individuals, the German government, public and private libraries, and a labor union. All returns were approved by the State Department. Additional Guides For many years, the sole access to the collection was Gerhard L. Weinberg's Guide to Captured German Documents (Columbia University, Bureau of Applied Social Research, 1952). It can no longer be used for sequence, but as it is indexed it still provides specific information. Processing History The collection was processed beginning with its receipt in the late 1940s. Revisions and additions were made as material was transferred into or out of the collection from other divisions of the Library or other institutions. The current finding aid was produced in 1989 and revised in 2011. Transfers Approximately half of the German material received by the Library of Congress was transferred to other libraries in the United States by 1951. Much of the material retained at the Library consisted of publications that were absorbed into the general collections and thus were ineligible for return. Related Material Related captured German documents in the Library include technical reports collected by American and British research teams during and after World War II and organized in the Science, Technology and Business Division as the PB Historical Collection. Copyright Status It is the researcher's responsibility to determine requirements of domestic copyright laws and international treaties and conventions. Access and Restrictions The German Captured Documents collection is open to research. Researchers are advised to contact the Manuscript Reading Room prior to visiting. Many collections are stored off-site and advance notice is needed to retrieve these items for research use. Microfilm A microfilm edition of this collection is available on 508 reels. Consult reference staff in the Manuscript Division concerning availability for purchase or interlibrary loan. To promote preservation of the originals, researchers are required to consult the microfilm edition as available. Introduction to the German Captured Documents on Microfilm In the fall of 1982, the Library of Congress and the Bundesarchiv of the Federal Republic of Germany agreed to an exchange arrangement involving these documents. The collection was to be microfilmed in a sequence selected by the Bundesarchiv, and, following the completion of segments of the film, the originals were to be delivered to the Bundesarchiv. German Captured Documents Collection 3 The Manuscript Division prepared the selected material for the camera, and the following shelflist is a product of that work. The researcher should be aware that Gerhard L. Weinberg's Guide to Captured German Documents (Columbia University, Bureau of Applied Social Research, 1952), which for years was the sole access tool to the collection, can no longer be used for sequence but as it is indexed it still provides specific information. Containers may be traced by the conversion chart preceding the shelflist. The chart, which is arranged by former container number, converts the former number to the new container that went to the camera.     Amtliche Bekanntmachung Öffentliche Bekanntmachung der öffentlich-rechtlichen Vereinbarung zur Bildung des „Gemeinsamen Gutachterausschusses Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis“ Präambel Zur Verbesserung der gesetzlichen Aufgabenerfüllung der Gutachterausschüsse bilden die Städte Adelsheim, Buchen, Mosbach, Osterburken, Ravenstein und Walldürn, sowie die Gemeinden Aglasterhausen, Billigheim, Binau, Elztal, Fahrenbach, Hardheim, Haß- mersheim, Höpfingen, Hüffenhardt, Limbach, Mudau, Neckargerach, Neckarzimmern, Neunkirchen, Obrigheim, Rosenberg, Schefflenz, Schwarzach, Seckach, Waldbrunn und Zwingenberg gem. § 1 Absatz 1 Satz 2 der Gutachterausschussverordnung (GuAVO), in der Fassung vom 11.12.1989, zuletzt geändert durch Verordnung vom 07.05.2020 den gemeinsamen Gutachterausschuss „Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis“. Hierzu wird gem. §§ 1, 25 des Gesetzes über kommunale Zusammenarbeit (GKZ), in der Fassung vom 16.09.1974, zuletzt geändert am 17.06.2020, die folgende öffentlich-rechtliche Vereinbarung geschlossen: § 1 Gegenstand der Vereinbarung (1) Die Städte Adelsheim, Buchen, Osterburken, Ravenstein und Walldürn, sowie die Gemeinden Aglasterhausen, Billigheim, Binau, Elztal, Fahrenbach, Hardheim, Haß- mersheim, Höpfingen, Hüffenhardt, Limbach, Mudau, Neckargerach, Neckarzimmern, Neunkirchen, Obrigheim, Rosenberg, Schefflenz, Schwarzach, Seckach, Waldbrunn und Zwingenberg - abgebende Gemeinden - übertragen die Bildung von Gutachterausschüssen nach § 1 Abs.1 Satz 2 GuAVO sowie die Erfüllung der in § 193 Baugesetzbuch geregelten Aufgaben des Gutachterausschusses

Primarily through loans to build up the economy and diplomatic pressure, the United States and Great Britain helped to maintain an independent Austrian state and prevent an Anschluss or union with Germany from 1918 to 1934. In addition, this study examines the minority of Austrians who opposed an Anschluss . The three main groups of Austrians that supported independence were the Christian Social Party, monarchists, and some industries and industrialists. These Austrian nationalists cooperated with the Americans and British in sustaining an unwilling Austrian nation. Ultimately, the global depression weakened American and British capacity to practice dollar and pound diplomacy, and the popular appeal of Hitler combined with Nazi Germany’s aggression led to the realization of the Anschluss .

Dr. Jackson is also the Editor of the Bloomsbury book series A Modern History of Politics and Violence.     Nazi Party Membership in Canada: A Profile by Jonathan WAGNER* During the Depression a National Socialist movement with two rel­ atively distinct components developed within Canada's German com­ munity. A pro-Nazi society, the Deutscher Bund Canada (DBC =German Association of Canada), was established for the so-called V olksdeutsche (Germans who had been born outside the Reich). The Bund held monthly meetings for its members and staged pro-Nazi celebrations such as Hitler birthday parties; it imported and distributed Nazi propaganda materials to Germans and non-Germans alike ; it joined with other indigenous German­ Canadian organizations and clubs to organize social events and to establish German language schools. The second arm of the Canadian Nazi move­ ment was a separate Nazi party organization (NSDAP). This group was composed of non-naturalized German Canadians and Reichsdeutsche (Germans born in Germany proper) residing in Canada who had applied for and been accepted into the National Socialist Party. Although frequent contact existed between the NSDAP units and the Bund (the two groups often combined to hold public displays and to promote common causes), efforts were made to keep the memberships separate. Up to the present time little serious effort has been made to deal with the Canadian Nazi movement in general and nothing has been pub­ lished specifically describing the National Socialist Party here. 1 Part of the reason for this neglect relates to the problem of sources. Most often those Canadian historians who have dabbled in Nazism have stopped their investigations upon exhausting the limited Canadian (mostly English) sources. They have failed to look outside the country to European sources for additional information.

Statements: - Exhibitions of architecture are part of a socio-political discourse. (“Critical” in this context of this lecture class means: exhibitions introducing a new theoretical and / or practical concept in contrast to existing traditions) PREHISTORY I. - Model Cabinets (Modellkammer), originally established as work tools for communication purposes and as educational tools for upcoming architects / engineers. Further aspect: building up an archive of technological inventions. - Example: The medieval collection of models for towers, gates, roof structures etc. in Augsburg, hosted by the Maximilianmuseum. - Originally these cabinets were only accessible for experts, professionals, not for public view. Sources of architecture exhibitions: - Technical and constructive materials (drawings, models). They tend to be private or just semi- public collections built up with education purposes. - The first public exhibitions of these models in the arts context didn’t happen until the end of the 18th century. Occasion: Charles de Wailly exhibited a model of a staircase in an arts exhibition in 1771.

    Quantifying Hitler’s Salon: A Statistical Analysis of Subjects at the Great German Art Exhibition, 1937-1944 Patrick J. Jung Department of Humanities, Social Science, and Communication Milwaukee School of Engineering Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202, USA Email: [email protected] Abstract: In recent decades, scholars have reassessed earlier historical interpretations that argued German art produced during the Nazi era was little more than kitsch. This reassessment has occurred in part due to the increased accessibility to the various sources required to thoroughly research Nazi-era art. The availability of the artistic oeuvre of the Third Reich has been enhanced by the 2012 launch of the online database Grosse deutsche Kunstausstellung, 1937-1944. This database makes possible a quantitative analysis of the artworks exhibited at Adolf Hitler’s annual art exhibition, the Grosse deutsche Kunstausstellung (Great German Art Exhibition), from 1937 to 1944. Tabulating the information found in this database indicates that landscapes and related works constituted the dominant subject category. Portraits, nudes, and depictions of animals were also significant, but overtly political art was uncommon. The subjects of Nazi-era art reflected the racial ideology of the Third Reich, but several subject categories remain largely unexamined in this respect. This essay provides statistical evidence that supports many of the scholarly interpretations concerning these subject categories and suggests new directions for future research.
