William Boyd's Sweet Caress captures an entire lifetime unforgettably within its pages. It captivates. William Boyd is one of my favorite writers. For me, any new book by Boyd is a cause for celebration, a good reason to drop everything and schedule a few long days with nothing else to do but enjoy it. So, that's exactly what I set out to do, but "Sweet Caress" took far longer for me to Sweet Caress: The Many Lives of Amory Clay than most of his books. This book wasn't a complex character-driven literary mystery, nor was it a nail-biting suspense-filled thriller; this was a fictionalized literary memoir covering the greater part of a century. The main character, Amory Clay, an independent, attractive, professional photographer, led a complex and complicated life that brought her face- to-face with many of the key moments of 20th century history. Amory's life journey from to -whether motivated by affairs of the heart or necessitated by a fascinating set of career challenges-takes her from London to Berlin, back to London, across the Atlantic to New York, back to London, on to Paris, then to the German WWII front lines, back to Paris, to the French countryside near Bordeaux, back to London, to the west coast of Scotland, many trips back and forth to London and Edinburgh, to Vietnam during the warback to Scotland, to Southern California and back to Scotland a few times, and finally back to Scotland to the small island of Barrendale in reality a peninsulaoff the far northeastern coast. I could tell you a bit about what motivates Amory to make these abrupt changes in location, but I don't think it would help illuminate the literary merit of the book and it might lessen your enjoyment of the novel should you choose to read it. Perhaps it is enough to say that her life is complex and complicated With Amory, Boyd creates a fully authentic human being. I find it nearly impossible to believe any reviewer who says that she or he found this character unbelievable. Especially women reviewers who says they find Amory not appropriately female enough. There is much about Amory that reminds me of many women I know including meall of us highly intelligent and independent.

A nymph of the sky falling in love with a man of the earth affords a theme which has captivated the minds of men in all ages and climes. Venus and Adonis, in the West, and Urvashi and Pururvasa, in India, have given to world literature poetry and drama of the noblest stature. In this poetic play the characters have not been given any names (except the nymph in the second half), on which technical point Puran Singh may be said to have anticipated a modernist tendency. But, as he claims, the characters have persistent individualities which serve for names equally well. The story is simple but has vast dimensions, like a geometric or cubist drawing. A nymph is flying about in the earthly air when a young man sees her. He instantly falls in love with her. The nymph responds to his love, comes down to the earth and stays with him for a day and a moonlit night, and then flies back to heaven. The young man goes mad from the ecstatic pain of love. But his madness is heightened by a mystic silence which makes the people around hail him as a saint. Then again one day the nymph ‘steals away from the side of heaven’ and ‘appears in the crowd wearing the earthly guise of woman. The young ascetic ran into her arms. over- whelmed her with his kisses.

In this masterpiece, Boyd, beautifully, brings to life Amory Clay, a female war photographer, in an inventive, clever and masterful way. The novel is written in the first person and interspersed with photos, bringing home the point that we are reading not just another book or autobiography but that of a photographer. The Prologue straightaway tells you about the first moment Clay gets hooked on photography, “In my hands I had the power to stop time, or so I fancied.” The book is divided into different parts, spanning almost a decade, as you travel with the protagonist on her life journey. Some parts, such as entries in her “The Barrandale Journal 1977,” are dotted throughout the book, recording flashbacks and other aspects of her life at that moment. The story starts with Amory, talking about her growing up years, the influence of her uncle, who first hands her a camera at the age of 7, and her way of killing perceptions of the people of her time. When she is born her father, who always wanted a son, gives her an androgynous name and announces that he has a son. The way she relates the incident makes it clear that she is a woman with a mind of her own, and as we watch her life unfold we see her not only unwilling to fit into a box but is restricted by no limits.

This question, vexed enough for most novelists, given the variety and transformation in any life case because the obvious answer he is a contemporary British novelist introduces follow-up questions of a currently unanswerable nature. Where is Britain; and what does it mean, in the twenty-first century, to be a British novelist? These definitions, for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, seemed not to matter greatly, as Britishness, in its local national variations, provided an ambiguous synthesising terrain for Scottish, Welsh and English writers. National identity in Scotland, Wales and England could, through the long reign of the British Empire, be assimilated more-or-less successfully into a broader British identity: British novelists were, quite simply, novelists from Britain. In the twenty- first century, with devolution and moves to full independence on the ascendant in Scotland, greater calls for Welsh autonomy, and the fact of multiculturalism a lived reality in English cities like Birmingham, London and Manchester, the question of what it is that makes an author British becomes rather more interesting, and rather more vexed. William Boyd, a Scottish author born in Africa and long resident in London, fits uneasily in accounts of the regionalisation .1 This may explain why, * Dougal McNeill teaches in the English Programme, Victoria University of Wellington. PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION. The visit to the United States of the venerated pioneer of American Missions to the East, the Rev. Dr. Judson, is an event too interesting to be suffered to pass without some appropriate memorial. Spared by the kind providence of God for more than a third of a century, amidst dangers and sufferings unparal leled in the history of modern Missions — honored as the translator of the whole Bible for the millions of Burmah — it was not surprising that an earnest desire had long been felt by American Christians, of every name, to look upon the man, whom God had thus highly honored. That desire has, at length, been gratified. After declining repeated invitations to revisit his native land, providential circumstances, of a peculiarly afflictive kind, have brought him in our midst.
