chapter 1 Introduction : Siting and Experiencing Divinity in Bengal-Vaishnavism background The anthropology of Hinduism has amply established that Hindus have a strong involvement with sacred geography. The Hindu sacred topography is dotted with innumerable pilgrimage places, and popu- lar Hinduism is abundant with spatial imaginings. Thus, Shiva and his partner, the mother goddess, live in the Himalayas; goddesses descend to earth as beautiful rivers; the goddess Kali’s body parts are imagined to have fallen in various sites of Hindu geography, sanctifying them as sacred centers; and yogis meditate in forests. Bengal similarly has a thriving culture of exalting sacred centers and pilgrimage places, one of the most important being the Navadvip-Mayapur sacred complex, Bengal’s greatest site of guru-centered Vaishnavite pilgrimage and devo- tional life. While one would ordinarily associate Hindu pilgrimage cen- ters with a single place, for instance, Ayodhya, Vrindavan, or Banaras, and while the anthropology of South Asian pilgrimage has largely been single-place-centered, Navadvip and Mayapur, situated on opposite banks of the river Ganga in the Nadia District of West Bengal, are both famous as the birthplace(s) of the medieval saint, Chaitanya (1486– 1533), who popularized Vaishnavism on the greatest scale in eastern India, and are thus of massive simultaneous importance to pilgrims in contemporary Bengal. For devotees, the medieval town of Navadvip represents a Vaishnava place of antique pilgrimage crammed with cen- turies-old temples and ashrams, and Mayapur, a small village rapidly 1 2 | Chapter 1 developed since the nineteenth century, contrarily represents the glossy headquarters site of ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness), India’s most famous globalized, high-profile, modern- ized guru movement. -

But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being. -

Department of A.I.H.C. and Archaeology, Deccan College Postgraduate and Research Institute, Pune – 411 006, Maharashtra, India (Email: ganeshbhongale333@ gmail.com) Received: 29 August 2018; Revised: 03 October 2018; Accepted: 12 November 2018 Heritage: Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Archaeology 6 (2018): 720‐738 Abstract: The present paper highlights a temple which is not discussed in the realm of the Vaishnavite tradition of Early Medieval South‐Western Maharashtra. If we delve further in the nature of Brahmanism during this period, Shaivism was in its fully developed form in that region as compared to rare occurrence of Viṣṇu temples. The temple discussed here stands on high platform pertaining exterior and interior plain walls and decorative pillars with diverse iconography. This temple is perhaps a rare example where the iconographic combination of Hayagriva and Surya is depicted, hinting at the possibility of prevalence of joint worship of Hayagriva and Surya. The prominent nature of Vaishnavite iconography suggests that this temple is associated with Viṣṇu. It is rare to find independent Viṣnụ temple during this period, hence this temple is probably the only temple of Visṇ ̣u in South‐Western Maharashtra. This region has witnessed a political presence of all important Early Medieval dynasties. Their presence can be testified through their written records and monumental activities. The period onwards, 10th century CE observed to be the period of large‐scale building activity of the temples in this region and elsewhere in Maharashtra. -

Bhagavata Purana
Bhagavata Purana The Bh āgavata Pur āṇa (Devanagari : भागवतपुराण ; also Śrīmad Bh āgavata Mah ā Pur āṇa, Śrīmad Bh āgavatam or Bh āgavata ) is one of Hinduism 's eighteen great Puranas (Mahapuranas , great histories).[1][2] Composed in Sanskrit and available in almost all Indian languages,[3] it promotes bhakti (devotion) to Krishna [4][5][6] integrating themes from the Advaita (monism) philosophy of Adi Shankara .[5][7][8] The Bhagavata Purana , like other puranas, discusses a wide range of topics including cosmology, genealogy, geography, mythology, legend, music, dance, yoga and culture.[5][9] As it begins, the forces of evil have won a war between the benevolent devas (deities) and evil asuras (demons) and now rule the universe. Truth re-emerges as Krishna, (called " Hari " and " Vasudeva " in the text) – first makes peace with the demons, understands them and then creatively defeats them, bringing back hope, justice, freedom and good – a cyclic theme that appears in many legends.[10] The Bhagavata Purana is a revered text in Vaishnavism , a Hindu tradition that reveres Vishnu.[11] The text presents a form of religion ( dharma ) that competes with that of the Vedas , wherein bhakti ultimately leads to self-knowledge, liberation ( moksha ) and bliss.[12] However the Bhagavata Purana asserts that the inner nature and outer form of Krishna is identical to the Vedas and that this is what rescues the world from the forces of evil.[13] An oft-quoted verse is used by some Krishna sects to assert that the text itself is Krishna in literary -

Course Description and Objectives: An encounter with the Krishna tradition as expressed in the classical Sanskrit text, the Bhagavata Purana. The course will primarily consist of an in depth reading of the first 10 books of this Purana. Secondary readings will give students some sense of the varied contexts within which the text is experienced in Krishna bhakti. Course Prerequisites: None. Course Requirement: Class attendance and participation, 10% of the final grade (10 or more absences constitutes a Fail grade); 3 quizzes (20% of the final grade each); a final paper, due the last day of class (30% of the final grade. Please note: there are no make-ups for missed exams except in the case of an absence caused by an unexpected emergency and evidenced by a doctor's or dean's note. In the event of such a documented emergency, the instructor must be informed of the impending absence immediately (i.e. on the day of the quiz), and the make-up must be taken on the day after the quiz. Before analyzing Siva Diksha which was conducted by Rajaraja I Chola it is worthwhile to understand meaning; types; secrets and stages of Siva Diksha. Diksha is a Sanskrit word moreover, Diksha (दीक्षा) is often mentioned and it is a Devanagari script. Diksha is also spelled as Diksha, Deeksha or Deeksa in common usage. Most of them translated Diksha as a "preparation or consecration for a religious ceremony.1 Diksha is giving of a mantra or an initiation by the Vedic teacher (Guru) in Guru– Shishya of our tradition of Indian religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Diksha is given in a one-to-one ceremony, and typically includes the taking on of a serious spiritual discipline.2 The word Diksha is a combination of two words dā + kṣi. The word Diksha derived from the Sanskrit root dā ("to give") plus kṣi ("to destroy") or alternately from the verb root dīkṣ ("to consecrate").3 The Siva Diksha is a ritual which initiates interested, committed, dedicated & sincere seekers to the most sacred Pancha (Five) Akshari (Letter) Maha Mantra. This Maha Mantra was mentioned in Holy Scriptures. Thus, the Siva Diksha is uplifting individuals, and the society at large. -

Introduction Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, an incarnation ofKrishna who appeared 500 years ago, taught the easiest method for self-realization - chanting the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra. Mantra means "a sound vibration that relieves the mind of all anxieties". We chant this mantra every day, but why? B. Chanting is the recommended process for this age. As you know, there are four different ages: Satya-yuga, Treta-yuga, Dvapara-yuga and Kali-yuga. People in Satya yuga lived for almost 100,000 years whereas in Kali-yuga they live for 100 years at best. In each age there is a different process for self realization or understanding God .
