Kids Rock: NXNE brings the next generation of artists to Harbourfront Centre – June 14-15
Harbourfront Centre joins forces with NXNE for a fun-filled weekend of live music, crafts, films, games, workshops and more!
TORONTO, ON (June 9, 2014) – Harbourfront Centre is proud to continue its annual partnership with North by Northeast (NXNE), presenting music, film and family activities as part of the larger, Toronto-wide NXNE music festival. NXNE activities at Harbourfront Centre offer varied experiences for people of all ages and all interests, including performances by Toronto’s emerging musical talents, as well as and creative workshops. Girls Rock Camp, at the centre of this year’s programming, bring the extraordinary talents, skills and abilities of girls and young women aged 8- 16 to the Redpath Stage.
“Now in its 20 th year, NXNE has become the most anticipated summer entertainment event in Canada,” explains Ryan Tonkin, NXNE’s Music & Comedy Programming Coordinator. “Though based in Toronto, NXNE brings a global perspective to programming. This June, NXNE Music will present over 900 artists from across the globe in just 5 days, and will be taking to Harbourfront Centre stages to present some of these buzz-worthy artists. NXNE is the Canadian festival destination for unsigned bands, indie favourites, and major-label headlining artists alike, and has a history of generating major worldwide breakthroughs. This event is not to be missed.”
At Harbourfront Centre, Girls Rock Camp and Broken Pencil’s Zine Machine bring their family- friendly energy to the stage. Looking to the next generation of NXNE artists, Harbourfront Centre and NXNE programmed bands exclusively featuring musicians 18 years and under.

ABOUT GIRLS ROCK CAMP Girls Rock Camp Toronto offers girls and young women aged 8-16 of all musical abilities and economic backgrounds a safe space to learn an instrument of their choice, while providing strong female mentors and role models, and tools to develop life skills and confidence. Professional musicians act as band coaches and instrument instructors, teaching fundamental music theory, improvisations, and performance, as well as effective communications, patience, empathy and negotiation skills.

MUSIC: Girls Rock Camp’s finest rockers make their NXNE and Harbourfront Centre debut as they perform some of their favourite songs on the Redpath Stage.
Brighid Fry Saturday, June 14 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. – Redpath Stage Brighid Fry is only 11 years old and already she has performed across Toronto. This talented young multi-instrumentalist has been making music since she could walk and talk. She has been with the Miles Nadal JCC Suzuki strings program since she was 4, and has played at the Tranzac Club and appeared on CBC Radio 3, as well as Global and CBC news.

Unicorn Patrol Saturday June 14 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. – Redpath Stage Inspired by a wide range of genres and musical artists, the Unicorn Patrol bring together childhood fun and wonder with the pain of growing up and social issues in their original songs, while putting a fresh twist on their favorites for their cover songs. With a depth and maturity beyond their years, these four girls will both tug at your heart strings and make you laugh. These four 10 and 11 year olds have all been learning to rock for years through the amazing organization Girls Rock Camp Toronto. The Unicorn Patrol was born at Girls Rock Camp in the summer of 2013 and they recently added another Girls Rock Camp alumnist as their drummer. Brighid (bass, violin, keys, guitar and vocals), Maaike (lead guitar and vocals), Patia (keys and vocals) and Saylor (drums and vocals) form the band. These talented girls have already graced venues such as Hugh’s Room, the Gladstone Hotel, the Tranzac and played for the BIG on Bloor Festival, Shameless Magazine launch parties, Community Environment Days and Familypalooza.
Pony Metal Orchestra Saturday June 14 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. – Redpath Stage Pony Metal Orchestra is a musical collective that seeks to experiment with different genres of music and push their musical talent. They believe in using music to build friendships and community. They have performed at several local events in Toronto.
The Overtones Saturday June 14 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. – Redpath Stage The Overtones are four thirteen year olds from Toronto: Alice (piano and vocals), Michau (drums, guitar and vocals), Miranda (bass, piano, and vocals) and Theadora (guitar, vocals and piano). The group was formed last summer at Girls Rock Camp Toronto and has performed as part of Canadian Music Week at the Royal Theatre and at the Dundas Street Festival in Toronto. The Overtones perform songs ranging from pop to alternative rock, including some of their own compositions. They’re excited at the opportunity to play at NXNE with so many amazing artists and inspiring musicians.
D'N'A Sunday June 15 1-1:30 p.m. –Redpath Stage Danae Trejo and Annika Forman are D'N'A –a singer and songwriting duo and former Girls Rock Campers who are striving to put a piece of themselves and their lives into their music
Deanna Petcoff Sunday June 15 2:30-3 p.m. –Redpath Stage Deanna Petcoff is a member of the band Pins & Needles, as a guitarist and a vocalist. She is a veteran of Girls Rock Camp Toronto and has played venues such as Lee's Palace and The Horseshoe Tavern among others.

Lyric Dubee Sunday June 15 4-4:30 p.m. –Redpath Stage Lyric Dubee is a multi-genre artist born and raised in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Proficient and at ease playing Rock, Pop, Blues, and Jazz, his deep appreciation and experimentation with all the genres led Lyric to personalize his own style of music known as Revolution Rock. He recently returned from Nashville where he recorded 3 new songs, 2 of which were co-written and produced by Bobby Amaru (Saliva frontman) and Nolan Neal (producer Cold, Shinedown, and Saliva). The other 2 songs were produced and recorded in Toronto at Oak Studios with Damon de Szegheo (engineer/ producer with a who’s who of Canadian music including Juno Award winners Serena Ryder, The Barenaked Ladies, and Bruce Cockburn). Lyric has opened for or shared the stage with performers such as Walk Off The Earth , David Usher , Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, Lee Aaron , Holly Woods of Toronto, Goddo, Drew Parker, Grant Boyer, Sean Ashby, The Wheelers, Steve Strongman, Virgil Scott, Downchild Blues Band with Chuck Jackson and many more talented musicians. His music can be heard in regular rotation on Internet radio and found on iTunes, Amazon, CDBaby, Soundcloud, Reverbnation, songza and many other sites.
Riverdale Sunday June 15 – 5: 30-6 p.m. –Redpath Stage Still in their early teens, Riverdale are eight-year vets of Toronto's club stages including many years playing at NXNE. Flynn Tanner (guitar, vocals), Reed Hollett (drums, vocals), Jack White (bass, vocals), Dexter Hornsby (keyboards), and newest addition Ava Tobias (sax, vocals) mix a growing list of originals with classic and contemporary rock covers.

NXNE Flicks Girls Rock! The Movie Saturday June 14 and Sunday June 15 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. – Studio Theatre NXNE will be showcasing the film: Girls Rock! The Movie, which is a documentary about four girls who transform their lives at the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls. Battling over band names, lyrical intent, and musical direction, these featured young rock stars captivate the audience with their vivid personalities, and exceptional journey.

Women Who Rock! Bingo Saturday June 14, from 12:00-4:30 p.m. – South Orchard Tent The patrons are invited to play a fun trivia game where they get to test their knowledge of women in music who ROCK! From Hip Hop to Punk and Folk to Gospel, they will learn about

Broken Pencil’s Zine Machine for Teens and Tweens Saturday June 14, from 12-5 p.m. – HarbourKids Zone Tent Sunday June 15 1-5 p.m. – HarbourKids Zone Tent Teens and Tweens can create their own ‘zines’ with Broken Pencil Magazine. Using various materials, such as cut and paste collage techniques and black-out writing, teens can create their own magazines.
