Spawn: The Eternal Prelude Darkness. Pain. What . oh. Oh god. I'm alive! CHOOSE. What? Oh great God almighty in Heaven . NOT QUITE. CHOOSE. Choose . choose what? What are you? Where am I? Am I in Hell? NOT YET. DO YOU WISH TO RETURN? Yes! Yes, of course I want to go back! But . what's the catch? What is all this? IT IS NONE OF YOUR CONCERN. WHAT WOULD YOU GIVE FOR A RETURN? TO SEE YOUR LOVED ONES, TO ONCE MORE TASTE LIFE? WHAT WOULD YOU GIVE? I . I'm dead, aren't I? YES. But . what can I give? I am dead, so I have nothing! NOT TRUE. YOU HAVE YOURSELF. Myself? I don't understand . is it my soul you want? NO. I ALREADY HOLD YOUR SOUL . I WISH TO KNOW IF YOU WOULD SERVE ME WILLINGLY IN RETURN FOR COMING BACK. Serve . to see my wife again . yes . to hold my children once more . yes. I will serve you. VERY WELL. THE DEAL IS DONE . In a rainy graveyard, something fell smoking to the ground. It sat up, shaking its head, looking around itself. Strange. Why was he lying here? He tried to stand up, surprising himself by leaping at least twenty feet into the air, landing as smoothly as a cat. How . then something caught his attention. He stared into the puddle of rainwater, trying to discern the vague shape that must be his own face. And then he screamed. Because what stared back was the burn-scarred skullface of a corpse, its eyes glowing a deep green.

  • Invincible Jumpchain- Compliant CYOA
Invincible Jumpchain- Compliant CYOA By Lord Statera Introduction Welcome to Invincible. Set in the Image comic book multiverse, this setting is home to older heroes and villains like Spawn, The Darkness, and The Witchblade. This story, however, focuses on the new superhero Invincible (Mark Grayson), the half-breed Viltrumite-Human hybrid and son of the world famous hero Omni-Man (Nolan Grayson). Invincible spends the beginning of his career working alongside the Teen Team, and with his father, to defend not only Baltimore but the Earth from many and varied threats. Little does he know that his father, rather than being an alien from a peace loving species, is actually a harbinger of war to the planet Earth. Viltrumites are actually a race bent on conquering the universe, one planet at a time. And with their level of power, not much can stop them. Fortunately, there is one secret the Viltrumite Empire has been hiding. Over 99% of the Viltrumite population had been wiped out using a plague genetically engineered by scientists of the Coalition of Planets, they are forced to wage a proxy war using their servant races against the Coalition, all the while sending individual Viltrumites out to take one world at a time, in their attempt to conquer the stars. As humans are the closest genetic match for the Viltrumite race outside of another Viltrumite, the remnants of this mighty alien race turn their sights on Earth in the hopes of using it as a breeding farm to repopulate their race. To help you survive in this universe, here are 1000 Choice Points.

  • “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... • The Adventure of the Shrinking Public Domain
ROSENBLATT_FINAL (DO NOT DELETE) 2/12/2015 1:10 PM THE ADVENTURE OF THE SHRINKING PUBLIC DOMAIN ELIZABETH L. ROSENBLATT* Several scholars have explored the boundaries of intellectual property protection for literary characters. Using as a case study the history of intellectual property treatment of Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional character Sherlock Holmes, this Article builds on that scholarship, with special attention to characters that appear in multiple works over time, and to the influences of formal and informal law on the entry of literary characters into the public domain. While copyright protects works of authorship only for a limited time, copyright holders have sought to slow the entry of characters into the public domain, relying on trademark law, risk aversion, uncertainty aversion, legal ambiguity, and other formal and informal mechanisms to control the use of such characters long after copyright protection has arguably expired. This raises questions regarding the true boundaries of the public domain and the effects of non-copyright influences in restricting cultural expression. This Article addresses these questions and suggests an examination and reinterpretation of current copyright and trademark doctrine to protect the public domain from formal and informal encroachment. * Associate Professor and Director, Center for Intellectual Property Law, Whittier Law School. The author is Legal Chair of the Organization for Transformative Works, a lifelong Sherlock Holmes enthusiast, and a pro bono consultant on behalf of Leslie Klinger in litigation discussed in this Article. I would like to thank Leslie Klinger, Jonathan Kirsch, Hayley Hughes, Hon. Andrew Peck, and Albert and Julia Rosenblatt for their contributions to the historical research contained in this Article.

  • Violent Comic Books and Perceptions of Ambiguous Provocation Situations
MEDIAPSYCHOLOGY, 2, 47–62. Copyright © 2000, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. Violent Comic Books and Perceptions of Ambiguous Provocation Situations Steven J. Kirsh Paul V. Olczak Department of Psychology State University of New York-Geneseo This study investigated the effects of reading very violent versus mildly violent comic books on the interpretation of ambiguous provocation situations, independent of trait hostility. 119 introductory psychology students read either a violent comic book, Curse of the Spawn, or a mildly violent comic book, Archie & Friends. After reading the comic books, participants read six short stories in which a child caused a negative event to happen to another child, but the intent of the peer causing this negative event was ambiguous. After each story, participants were asked a series of questions about the harmdoer’s intent, potential retaliation toward the harmdoer, and about the harmdoer’s emotional state. Responses were coded in terms of amount of negative and violent content. Results indicate that those male participants reading the violent comic books responded more negatively on the ambiguous provocation story questions than male participants reading the mildly violent comic books. For females, responding was primarily governed by trait hostility. These data suggest that hostile attributional bias may be influenced by gender, trait hostility, and exposure to violent media. Over the past two decades, voluminous research has focused on media influences (e.g., television, video games) on aggression. These studies consistently find that exposure to violent themes in media is significantly related to aggressive behavior and thoughts (Anderson, 1997, Berkowitz, 1984, Cesarone, 1998). An additional, yet understudied, source of media violence to which individuals are frequently exposed is comic books.

  • Kahlil Gibran a Tear and a Smile (1950)
“perplexity is the beginning of knowledge…” Kahlil Gibran A Tear and A Smile (1950) STYLIN’! SAMBA JOY VERSUS STRUCTURAL PRECISION THE SOCCER CASE STUDIES OF BRAZIL AND GERMANY Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan P. Milby, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Melvin Adelman, Adviser Professor William J. Morgan Professor Sarah Fields _______________________________ Adviser College of Education Graduate Program Copyright by Susan P. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.
