Closure of Important Parks Canada Archaeological Facility The
July 19, 2017 For Immediate Release Re: Closure of Important Parks Canada Archaeological Facility The Newfoundland and Labrador Archaeological Society is saddened to learn of Parks Canada’s continuing plans to close their Archaeology Lab in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This purpose-built facility was just opened in 2009, specifically designed to preserve, house, and protect the archaeological artifacts from Atlantic Canada’s archaeological sites under federal jurisdiction. According to a report from the Nova Scotia Archaeological Society (NSAS), Parks Canada’s continued plans are to shutter this world-class laboratory, and ship the archaeological artifacts stored there to Gatineau, Quebec, for long-term storage. According to data released by the NSAS, the archaeological collection numbers approximately “1.45 million archaeological objects representing thousands of years of Atlantic Canadian heritage”. These include artifacts from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, including sites at Signal Hill National Historic Site, Castle Hill National Historic Site, L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, Terra Nova National Park, Gros Morne National Park, and the Torngat Mountains National Park. An archaeological collection represents more than just objects—also stored at this facility are the accompanying catalogues, site records, maps and photographs. Federal and provincial heritage specialists, private heritage industry consultants, university researchers, conservators, community groups, and students of all ages have visited and made use of the centre. Indeed, the Archaeology Laboratory is more than just a state-of-the-art artifact storage facility for archaeological artifacts—its value also lies in the modern equipment housed in its laboratories, in the information held in its reference collections, site records, and book collections, and in the collective knowledge of its staff. -

'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors. -

While we have not yet had time to develop the complete design and details for the proposed relocation, we have looked at the house and we are confident that it can be successfully moved and restored. We have reviewed your comments in your letter of July 22, 2019 to the IBI Group, specifically items 2 & 4 in the comments on the HIA. Item 2 requests clarification regarding the preservation of the stone foundation when the dwelling is moved. We believe that preservation of the visible portion of the stone foundation between grade and the brick would meet the intent of the designating bylaw and the approach which we have used on previous similar projects is to salvage the stone from the foundation, place the building on a new concrete foundation constructed with a shelf in the concrete, and re-lay the salvaged stone so no concrete is visible in the finished project. In cases where the stone wall is of particular importance, we have documented the positions of the stones and replaced them exactly as originally located on the building, although in most cases the use of the salvaged material laid in a pattern matching the original is sufficient to meet the intent. -

Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Original Earthen Bastion of French Period Fort Beausejour National Historic Park Aulac, New Brunswick At the middle of the 18th century the dividing line between French and British influence in Acadia lay along the Missaguash River, one of the four rivers that drain the southern slope of the Isthmus of Chignecto. In 1710 New England militiamen and British regulars had captured the French Port Royal, thus in one engagement effecting the conquest of the Nova Scotia main- land. The Treaty of Utrecht, concluded three years later, formally transferred Acadia to Great Britain. But what was Acadia? The British hopefully believed parts of what is now New Brunswick were included. The French, confident that they would soon win back the Nova Scotia mainland, could not consider such a broad definition of the geographical limits of Acadia. They were determined to hold as much ground as they could. Time seemed to be in their favor. Against the weak and ill-disciplined garrison at Annapolis Royal and the few detachments occupying isolated posts in the peninsula, the French could send Indian raiding parties. While the British struggled against the harassments of the Indians, the population of Acadia—over whelmingly French—could be provoked to at least passive resistance against their alien conquerors. Britain’s Magnificent “Forts” The Freedom Freighters of WW 2 By Geoff Walker For our non-seafaring friends, many would associate the word “Fort” with some kind of medieval bastion or land based strong hold, but in the case to hand, nothing could be further from reality. Fort was the name given to a class of Cargo Ship built in Canada during WW2, for the British government (MOWT), under the Lend Lease scheme. All Fort ships, except two which were paid for outright, were transferred on bareboat charter, on Lend - lease terms, from the Canadian Government or the U.S. War Shipping Administration who bought ninety of the 'Forts' built in Canada. The construction of this type of ship commenced in 1942, and by war’s end well over 230 of these vessels had been delivered to the MOWT, (including all “Fort” variants and those built as Tankers) each at an average cost of $1,856,500. Often, confusion persists between “Fort” and “Park” class ships that were built in Canada. To clarify, “Fort” ships were ships transferred to the British Government and the “Park” ships were those employed by the Canadian Government, both types had similar design specifications. All Fort ships were given names prefixed by the word “Fort”, whilst “Park” ships all had names ending or suffixed with “Park” at the time of their launching, although names were frequently changed later during their working life. These ships were built across eighteen different Canadian shipyards. Their triple expansion steam engines were built by seven different manufacturers. There were 3 sub-classes of the type, namely, “North Sands” type which were mainly of riveted construction, and the “Canadian” and “Victory” types, which were of welded construction.
