It will take place at the Shang Cineplex from August 31 to September 3. Pinoy bands and international artists team up with nine silent lms for a unique fusion of live music and cinema's most classical form in this year's International Silent Film Festival at the Shangri-la Plaza Cineplex from August 31 to September 3, 2017. This year, Rivermaya and Sandwich join the festival for the rst time as they score music for silent lms from the 1920s. On September 3, Rivermaya will provide live accompaniment for Austria's Café Elektric (1927), a lm about a “love square” of characters who frequent Café Elektric, a somewhat liberal cafe set in the backdrop of conservative Vienna in the 1920s. “We chose Rivermaya because the band understands what the lm wants to convey, and we wanted a band who knows exactly what Filipinos want to listen to and know what they are looking for when they go to a concert. We want the music to bridge the gap between a silent lm and a modern audience,” said Zelpha Bombais of the Austrian Embassy at the press conference for the festival. Meanwhile, Sandwich is set to score the classic melodrama Pandora's Box (1929) from Germany also on September 3. Based on two plays by Frank Wedekind, this lm by Georg Wilhelm Pabst is notable for its lesbian subplot and Louise Brooke's portrayal of a seductive woman from the 1920s, which turned her into a star. Shadin Kitma from the Goethe Institute tapped Sandwich to work on a silent lm for the rst time. “Seeing Lulu dance reminded me of how Raimund [Marasigan of Sandwich] would sometimes perform,” he said. Spain's opening act at 8:00 PM on August 31 with El Golfo (1918), an elaborate action comedy lm that spans two decades, also features new music by festival rst-timer Talahib, a world-music rock band that pays homage to homegrown music using indigenous instruments. "It’s about bringing onstage somebody who can portray the actress in the movie and be herself, and provide music for this movie,” said Macalintal. "For this movie, I will be singing mostly in French, and playing the electronic harp, which is like the expression of femininity because it looks delicate but requires strength to play,” she said. This year’s festival also sees the premiere of Una famiglia perfetta (A Perfect Family), a new silent lm made of footage of a real family over the course of a decade and completed this year by Italian-Filipino director Ruben Maria Soriquez. The family drama, which also has a touch of crime and tragedy, will be accompanied by instrumental rock trio Tom’s Story on September 2 at 3 PM. Japan’s gangster drama Dragnet Girl (1933), meanwhile, introduces the combination of a live interpretation of a katsudo benshi, who acts as a narrator, actor, and storyteller, and musical scoring by a live band. The addition of a live narrator is new for the festival, but not in Japan, where benshi, who followed the tradition of narration also heard in kabuki and bunraku, were stars in their own right. Ichiro Kataoka, one of the best- known professional benshi in Japan today, will be narrating the lm along with traditional Filipino music provided by the Celso Espejo Rondalla (CER) on September 2 at 5:30 PM. The Philippines also offers something new with Gym Lumbera’s Taglish (2012), a drama about the indelity that comes between a husband and wife in their twilight years. Lourd De Veyra returns to the festival with his new band Kapitan Kulam, an instrumental stoner-metal quartet featuring members of Pastilan Dong and Radioactive Sago Project, to score this meditation on love and language on September 2 at 8 PM. Buster Keaton represents the United States with The General (1926), his most ambitious work as a director and one of the most revered comedies of the silent era. This action/comedy, which features the most expensive stunt involving a train in those times, will be accompanied by soul band Flippin Soul Stompers on September 3 at 8 PM. “We’ll try to sound like a soul band from the 1920s and end the festival with a party,”said Bing Austria of Flippin Soul Stompers. This year’s festival will also feature an exhibit at the Atrium of Shangri-La Plaza by Para sa Sining, a community of creative collaborators who will also present contemporary lms of the silent lm genre. The group will present Musika x Pelikula, featuring short lms that will be scored by live musical performances from young and upcoming artists at the Atrium on September 3 at 2 PM, 7:15 PM, and 9:30 PM. Byahe Pa Rin: Noel Cabangon Live in Legazpi was held at Mexita Pizza and started with opening acts namely, Arian, Karampag, Sofia Capili and Jan Aldrin who are all from Legazpi. Noel Cabangon started his set with classic OPM songs such as “Overdrive” by Eraserheads and “Ulan” by Rivermaya. He also sang his own rendition of “Tadhana” by Up Dharma Down and performed a duet with Sofia Capili with the song “With A Smile” by Eraserheads. Of course, the night wouldn’t be complete without performing his orginal songs “Tuloy Pa Rin” and “Kanlungan” where the audience didn’t hesitate to sing along! The night was filled with nostalgia as everyone was enjoying the music, their food and their company. This event was surely memorable and kept Original Pinoy Music alive in the hearts of Filipinos. YEAR AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Philippine Music is divided into four eras or traditions, namely Ethnic, Spanish Colonial, American Colonial and Contemporary traditions. Majority of Philippine Music really revolves around cultural influence from the West, due primarily to the Spanish and American rule for over 3 centuries. Oriental (ethnic) musical backgrounds are still alive, but mainly thrive in highland and lowland barrios where there is little Western influence. II. THE ERAS ETHNIC TRADITION (9th to early 16th century) Philippine ethnic musical traditions are diverse in nature, although there are many common instruments and life-cycle functions. They differ and vary mainly in form and structure, performance media, style, aesthetics, and theoretical properties (temperaments, scales, modes, and terminologies). The diversity of ethnic musical traditions arises from several significant historical accidents. The Philippines had proto-Malays as the first inhabitants, followed by settlers from mainland and insular Southeast Asia. In essence, the separate regional settlements in the country were a result of this wave of migration. Chinese, Malay, Indonesian and Arab merchants started dynamic trading with the people of Ma-i (now Mindoro). With the trading, the merchants not only traded goods but also religious and social ideas. Indian culture was very much evident and had a strong imprint in the culture then. Islam was introduced in the 14th century in the island of Sulu. Various communities adopted this new religion, which very much influenced their culture and music. Indigenous music can be instrumental or vocal. This musical tradition may mark rites of passage and life-cycle events for the early Filipinos.

"2 of 293" The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond James Gabrillo Abstract This dissertation provides the first detailed account of the mass musical culture of the Philippines that originated in the 1990s and continues to be the most popular style of musical entertainment in the country — a scene I dub the New Manila Sound. Through a combination of archival research, musical analysis, and ethnographic fieldwork, my ex- amination focuses on its two major pioneers: the musical television programme Eat Bula- ga! (Lunchtime Surprise) and the pop-rock band Aegis. I document the scene’s rise and development as it attracted mostly consumers from the lower classes and influenced oth- er programmes and musicians to adapt its content and aesthetics. The scene’s trademark kitsch qualities of parody, humour, and exaggeration served as forms of diversion to au- diences recovering from the turbulent dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos from 1965 to 1986, when musical works primarily comprised of state-commissioned nationalist an- thems, Western art music, and protest songs.

In its heyday, silent lms were accompanied by musicians and bands while they played on screen. Live scoring became a phenomenon during the early stages of cinema. Today, that practice belongs to cultural and artistic vaults and museums. It’s reduced to a mere cult of the past. This phenomenon can never be replicated but we can always try to revive it and never let it die. That is the purpose of the International Silent Film Festival (ISFF). From left: Mark Escueta, Mike Elgar, Nathan Azarcon, and Ryan Peralta Established in 2007 as the very rst event of its kind in Asia, ISFF-Manila or ISFFM brings screen junkies and music geeks together inside the theater for an extraordinary experience. This year, the Philippine-Italian Association, the Japan Foundation Manila, Goethe-Institut Philippinen, the Film Development Council of the Philippines, Instituto Cervantes, the British Council, and the embassies of the United States of America, France, and Austria, are extremely proud to present the 11th edition of the International Silent Film Festival in Manila.
