• Analytic, Descriptive, and Prescriptive Components of Evolving Jazz: a New Model Based on the Works of Brad Mehldau
Analytic, Descriptive, and Prescriptive Components of Evolving Jazz: A New Model Based on the Works of Brad Mehldau Mark Edward Baynes An exegesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts The University of Auckland 2015 ii Abstract Jazz has steadily evolved from its inception in the late 19th century to the present. As is the case for other genres, musicological analytic research on jazz evolution has lagged behind its practice; consequently, there is a paucity of in-depth descriptive and analytic research on the music of recent innovators. Among the most recent examples of this evolution, the works of Brad Mehldau as a solo/ensemble pianist and as a composer arguably embody some of the most compelling innovations in the field. Non-academically oriented jazz writers and fans have consistently assigned these works vanguard status, but Mehldau’s output has not yet been sufficiently examined to prescribe performance methods. This exegesis contains (1) descriptive analysis of improvisation contained within a broad cross-section of Mehldau’s music; (2) definition of a new analytical lexicon derived from a holistic study of consonance, dissonance, and research into perceived motivation in music; and (3) prescriptive musical tools relating to consonance and dissonance that have informed the researcher’s performance. iii Acknowledgements I would like to express my special thanks to Dr David Lines, Associate Professor W. Jazz Collection: Lyle Mays Dienstag, 19. November 2013, 21.00 - 22.00 Uhr Samstag, 23. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Mr. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional "jazz guitar" sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Mr. Metheny has continued to re-define the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. As well as being an accomplished musician, Mr. Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). Over the years, Mr. Metheny has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records for Still Life (Talking), Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards in 12 different categories. Host: Bill Glovin serves as executive editor of The Dana Foundation. JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

NEW RELEASE O N I N T U I T I O N R E C O R D S R E C E I V E D 4 G R A M M Y N O M I N A T I O N S OREGON’s latest project, Oregon In Moscow, is a double CD with the Moscow Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, and the group’s recorded debut of their orchestral repertoire—a prodigious body of work that has been developing over the life of the band, but never documented. In the thirty-year history of OREGON, there has always existed a strong kinship to orchestral music. The use of the double reeds alone has given the quartet an identity and expansive sound associated with the symphonic orchestra. This association isn’t confined only to their use of many orchestral instruments, but applies also to the composition and presentation of the music, including the careful attention to details such as articulation, dynamics, phrasing and tone production derived from their respective classical studies. Chief composer Ralph Towner explains, “OREGON came together as a group in New York City in 1970, and from the outset it was clear that our unusual instrumentation and collective musical experience invited a different approach to composition and improvisation. The jazz tradition of improvisation usually consists of the soloists taking turns improvising on the song’s harmonic structure, recycling the chord progressions and returning to the original melody only on the last repeat of the cycle. While still using and honoring this tradition, we began composing longer, more sectional forms that allowed each soloist to improvise on different material within the context of a single piece.
