11-0389 CD7 CONSIDERATION OF MOTION (ALARC6N- CARDENAS) relative to designating the intersection of Glen oaks and Van Nuys Boulevards as "Marie Harris Square."

Recommendations for Council action:

1. DESIGNATE the intersection of Glenoaks and Van Nuys Boulevards as "Marie Harris Square."

2. DIRECT the Department of Transportation to work with other City departments, as needed, and in consultation with Council District Seven staff, to design and install the appropriate sign(s) at this location to implement the above action.

Marie Harris passed away due to complications from pneumonia and Valley Fever on December 2, 2009, at age 87, surrounded by family. Ms Harris was a leader of the Pacoima community for the improvement and empowerment of the residents of the Northeast and their quality oflife. With her passion, organizing skills, and her leadership, Mrs. Harris helped develop Pacoima's Community Center and its first new major shopping center at the intersection of Glenoaks and Van Nuys Boulevards. She served on the Board of Directors for the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley, as a Commissioner for the Children's Museum and as a Commissioner for the San Fernando Valley Fair. She also served on the Board of Directors of Valley Vote as well as the Board of Directors of the Pacoima Chamber of Commerce and was very involved every year with their Pacoima Christmas Parade.

Ms Harris was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She later moved to Detroit, Michigan where she began a distinguished career as a dress designer and co-owned the elite Boulevard House of Fashions. She captured the "Formal Award" in a nationwide competition from the National Association of Fashion and Accessory Designers (NAFAD). When she moved to Pacoima in 1960, she served as Fashion Coordinator for NAF AD spearheading their Designers Showcase at the Beverly Hilton in 1963 & 1964. Also in 1964 she produced a series of Designers Showcase Fashion Shows to help raise funds for St. John of God Hospital and to build a new educational unit for Parks Chapel AME Church in Pacoima. In 1973, she became a columnist for the North East Valley Post writing 2 weekly columns, "Fashions LTD" and "Kaleidoscope" society scoop.

In 1980, Marie was appointed to Mayor Bradley's Committee on the City's Bicentennial Celebration in the Sepulveda Basin. Recognizing the pride of individual Pacoima homeowners could benefit the community at large, Mrs. Harris established the Pacoima Property Owners' Association (PPOA) to work on community beautification projects and launched the "Back to Pacoima and We Love it Expo" a free two day outdoor family event and concert at Hansen Dam Amphitheater to honor Pacoima's superstars, professionals and trailblazers from 1980 through 1987.

On December 13, 1986, Los Angeles City Councilman honored Marie Harris as the Honorary Mayor of Pacoima. Mrs. Harris served as a delegate to the California State Democratic Party Convention for I 0 years and was honored by the California State Legislature in 1994 and 2004 as Woman of the Year.

I THEREFORE MOVE that the City of Los Angeles reco1,>nize the great contributions of Mrs. Marie Harris to the people and community of Pacoima and to the City of Los Angeles by naming the intersection ofGlenoaks and Van Nuys Boulevards as "Marie Harris Square" in recognition of Mrs. Harris' public service, life, and achievements.
