DRAMATURGY GUIDE School of Rock: The Musical The National Theatre January 16-27, 2019 Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber Book by Julian Fellowes Lyrics by Glenn Slater Based on the Paramount Film Written by Mike White Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie Packet prepared by Dramaturg Linda Lombardi Sources: School of Rock: The Musical, The Washington Post ABOUT THE SHOW Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school to earn a few extra bucks. To live out his dream of winning the Battle of the Bands, he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching the students what it means to truly rock, something happens Dewey didn’t expect... they teach him what it means to care about something other than yourself. For almost 200 years, The National Theatre has occupied a prominent position on Pennsylvania Avenue – “America’s Main Street” – and played a central role in the cultural and civic life of Washington, DC. Located a stone’s throw from the White House and having the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site as it’s “front yard,” The National Theatre is a historic, cultural presence in our Nation’s Capital and the oldest continuously operating enterprise on Pennsylvania Avenue. The non-profit National Theatre Corporation oversees the historic theatre and serves the DC community through three free outreach programs, Saturday Morning at The National, Community Stage Connections, and the High School Ticket Program.

  • Frank's World
Chris Rojek / Frank Sinatra Final Proof 9.7.2004 10:22pm page 7 one FRANK’S WORLD Frank Sinatra was a World War One baby, born in 1915.1 He became a popular music phenomenon during the Second World War. By his own account, audiences adopted and idol- ized him then not merely as an innovative and accomplished vocalist – his first popular sobriquet was ‘‘the Voice’’ – but also as an appealing symbolic surrogate for American troops fighting abroad. In the late 1940s his career suffered a precipitous de- cline. There were four reasons for this. First, the public perception of Sinatra as a family man devoted to his wife, Nancy, and their children, Nancy, Frank Jr and Tina, was tarnished by his high-octane affair with the film star Ava Gardner. The public face of callow charm and steadfast moral virtue that Sinatra and his publicist George Evans concocted during his elevation to celebrity was damaged by his admitted adultery. Sinatra’s reputation for possessing a violent temper – he punched the gossip columnist Lee Mortimer at Ciro’s night- club2 and took to throwing tantrums and hurling abuse at other reporters when the line of questioning took a turn he disap- proved of – became a public issue at this time. Second, servicemen were understandably resentful of Sina- tra’s celebrity status. They regarded it as having been easily achieved while they fought, and their comrades died, overseas. Some members of the media stirred the pot by insinuating that Sinatra pulled strings to avoid the draft. During the war, like most entertainers, Sinatra made a virtue of his patriotism in his stage act and music/film output.

MASTER & STUDENT: (left to right) Sierra Boggess & Tyne Daly in revival of Master Class on Broadway. Photo: Joan Marcus Theater Review Master Class: Tyne Daly's gutsy take on Maria Callas MASTER CLASS Book by Terrence McNally Directed by Stephen Wadsworth Through August 21, 2011 Manhattan Theatre Club at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre 261 West 47th Street, (212-239-6200) www.ManhattanTheatreClub.com By David NouNou Revivals are a great way of re-examining a theatrical piece and its durability, especially if the work is an award-winning play. I must admit that I am a sucker for revisiting seldom-revived plays, and Terrence McNally’s Master Class is no exception. It was the 1996 Tony-winning drama for Best Play, Best Actress, Zoe Caldwell, and Best Featured Actress, Audra McDonald. I know back then I was really rooting for it to win Best Play, and there was no contest in the Best Actress category. No one had a chance running against the legendary Ms. Caldwell, La Divina of the theatrical world. Seeing what Master Class was up against that year, I can understand the victory in 1996. (The other Best Play nominees were weak and, in some cases, big, pretentious bores). However, if it would have opened earlier this year, and qualified for the 2011 Tonys, other than Tyne Daly as Maria Callas for Best Actress, what else would it have been up for? This is not to say that Master Class is not still enjoyable, entertaining, and enthralling. In this version, it seems less of a play and more of an extended monologue.
