St::ttns of 15 Antioch Insects Listed in Notice of 75 Review by the U.S. Fish "l.nd Wildlife Service INTRODUCTION The sand dune formation east of Antioch, Contra Costa County, California, comprised the largest riverine dune system in California. Biogeographically, this formation was unique because it supported a northern extension of plants and animals of desert, rather than coastal, affinities. Geologists believe that the dunes were relicts of the most recent glaciation of the Sierra Nevada, probably originating 10,000 to 25,000 years ago, with the sand derived from the supratidal floodplain of the combined Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. The ice age climate in the area is thought to have been cold but arid. Presumably summertime winds sweeping through the Carquinez Strait across the glacial-age floodplains would have picked up the fine-grained sand and redeposited it to the east and southeast, thus creating the dune fields of eastern Contra Costa County. -

Caterino1,4, Stylianos Chatzimanolis2, and Maxi Polihronakis Richmond3 ABSTRACT.—California’s 8 Channel Islands host a large diversity of insects, the vast majority of which are shared with mainland southern California. The existence of a small number of recognized endemic species, however, sug- gest that, for some lineages, the islands are isolated enough to have permitted significant differentiation. Here we investigate the phylogeographic relationships of 4 beetle species (Thinopinus pictus, Hadrotes crassus, Hypocaccus lucidulus, and Nyctoporis carinata): all occurring on the mainland and on multiple (up to 6) Channel Islands. Sequences of the cytochrome oxidase I mitochondrial gene (and, for one species, an intron in the nuclear guftagu gene) are analyzed by Bayesian, haplotype network, and population genetic methods to examine relationships and gene flow among island and mainland populations. -

Shinta Puspitasari April 2016 2 Abstract Beetles comprise not only the most diverse group of insects, but also contribute significantly to vital ecological functions. A quantitative formula to determine the optimal level of investment in the beneficial beetle conservation is still not available. I aim to establish specific attention to beetles and their role in tropical island ecosystems in small archipelago in Indonesia. The study aims to give further insights into beetle diversity patterns on islands in the Kepulauan Seribu Marine National Park and on Java, and how island isolation and area affect assemblage composition. My research also provides insights into the effects of anthropogenic activities on beetle diversity on these islands. A first important result is the substantial number of highly abundant island species and a high number of unique island species found in the study areas, indicating islands as potentially important for the global conservation of genetic resources. My results also highlight the highly varied results relating to the use of two different types of traps, pitfall traps and FITs, for sampling beetles. It underscores the need for complementary trapping strategies using multiple methods for beetle community surveys in tropical islands. -

3.4 Terrestrial Biological Resources 1 3.4 TERRESTRIAL BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES 2 This section of the Revised Analysis of Public Trust Resources (APTR) describes the 3 terrestrial biological resources (i.e., onshore above the tidal zone, including freshwater 4 habitats) with the potential to be impacted by the Broad Beach Restoration Project 5 (Project). Terrestrial biological resources include local habitat types, biological 6 communities, and sensitive species, as well as invasive species. This section also 7 evaluates the impacts that Project implementation may have on these resources. 8 Analysis in this section focuses on terrestrial biological resources at both the CSLC 9 Lease Area and the Public Trust Impact Areas that may be affected directly or indirectly 10 by any of the primary Project components. This analysis is based on information from 11 the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) California Natural Diversity 12 Database (CNDDB), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) critical habitat map portal, 13 Applicant-funded biological reports pertaining to Broad Beach and down coast areas, 14 and reconnaissance-level field surveys of Broad Beach and immediate vicinity 15 performed by AMEC Environment & Infrastructure, Inc. (AMEC). 16 The information presented here is intended to inform the California State Lands 17 Commission (CSLC) as it considers whether to issue a lease for those portions of the 18 Project within the CSLC’s jurisdiction. Implementation of the Project by the Broad Beach 19 Geologic Hazard Abatement District (BBGHAD or Applicant) is statutorily exempt from 20 the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Public Resources Code 21 sections 26601 and 21080, subdivision (b)(4) (see Section 1, Introduction). -

Am. 103(5): 785Ð795 (2010); DOI: 10.1603/AN10037 ABSTRACT The California Channel Islands have been the focus of multiple conservation studies on charismatic vertebrates and plant species, but very few studies have focused on insects. In this study we examined the phylogeography of Coelus pacificus Fall (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), a dune- inhabiting darkling beetle, endemic to the islands. Our aim in this study is to decipher the relationships between C. pacificus and the congeneric species Coelus ciliatus Eschscholtz that is distributed on the mainland, to examine the biogeographic relationships of the islands and augment the conservation efforts on the islands with insect data. We sequenced 235 specimens of Coelus for the cytochrome oxidase I mitochondrial gene. We performed phylogenetic analyses to assess the historical relation- ships of the different species and islands. We also examined the connectedness of the islands by using pairwise ⌽st and hierarchical analysis of molecular variance to test alternate hypotheses of geograph- ical structure. Based on the phylogenetic analyses, C. pacificus is a valid, multi-island endemic species. Haplotypes were grouped into two clades: one clade composed of Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and San Nicolas; and the other clade composed of Santa Catalina and San Clemente. The highest haplotypic diversity was observed in San Clemente and San Nicolas islands, but all islands had unique haplotypes.
