WE FOCUS ON THE'IMPORTANT A r t s & Entertainment ISSUES SUCH AS THE Bea Lillie, from pg. 20 rehearsals but later she unbent; de Wolfe was a darling to work with from the very ENVIRONMENT, THE ARTS beginning. When the show reached the Winter Garden on Broadway it was a nightly battle of wits between the two leads. Lillie would do something outrageous in a sketch and, not to be outdone, de Wolfe would do something just as zany. No one is certain just AND FEATURE NEWS. who called a halt to the horseplay, because it was ruining the pace of the show, but my firm guess would be the producers. Lillie was a born clown and never did the same bit of business twice. She would do some crazy something, physical or facial, that would cause the audience to laugh until they almost cried. But as easily and naturally as it happened, it also disappeared. She would never use it again. She couldn't lock in a performance, and that is not easy to cope with as Tammy Grimes found out when she starred with her in High Spirits, the musical of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirits. One of my favorite stories about the lady was told to me by Donald Pippin, the musical director I worked with at Radio City Music Hall. Pippin also did almost every Broadway show that Jerry Herman wrote and conducted the original company of A Chorus Line, One of Ms first jobs was playing piano for Lillie's one-woman show. He was frightened out of his wits as to how she would react to him, and also soon learned that the star was not fond of rehearsing. He did not feel completely prepared but, hopefully, things would go well. On opening night Lillie, the star, made her entrance carrying a huge shillelagh. She headed straight for the piano, lifting the shillelagh on high. Sud- denly she stopped, looked directly at Pippin and said, "Mr. Pippin, take this thing out and have it straightened." The audience roared at the line, but even more at the bewil- dered Pippin's take. In High Spirits, one of the last shows that she did, Lillie played Madame Arcati, Bright & Airy "Updated" Four Bedroom Family Home with over 3,500 Sq. Ft. the sensitive spiritualist who could communicate with those who had passed over. For- tunately, I was able to come into the theater and watch some of the final rehearsals because the producers were friends. Mr. Coward would be sitting in the audience whoop- ing it up as Lillie pranced and cavorted on stage. Poor Tammy Grimes (one of my favorite students from my jazz classes) was close to a nervous breakdown. Lillie was like a mischievous child and Tammy's disciplined performing abilities were constantly being shakenl The afternoon I was there she went that little bit too far and Coward leapt to his feet and gave her a sound verbal thrashing. It didn't phase her. I later learned that for one of the early previews, unbeknownst to anyone, Lillie • $2,195,000 had purchased a pair of those huge, furry, bunny house slippers with great big eyes and • 120' BEACH Near Beach, Tennis, Pool, updated floppy ears. Tammy was not entertained. My strongest memory is of her in the first act finale of Ziegfeld Follies. She made her entrance sliding down a bannister in full harem costume and then curled up on an FABULOUS £AST END LOCATION ornate couch and started sucking her thumb (this had been a potent bit of business in the much-touted film with Carroll Baker as Baby Doll.) Tastefully furnished She probably entered the Pearly Gates wearing a long skirt, on roller skates, in pool home. Great for some get-up she had worn in one of her early revues. Passing through the gates, she family Jiving or would have undoubtedly lifted her skirts a bit and clanked the cymbals strapped on entertaining. each leg at the knees together.
