▪ Pasadena, city, county, , U.S. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. The area was part of Rancho el Rincon de San Pasqual, a northeast section of the San Gabriel Mission (1771). The city was founded in 1874 by Thomas B. Elliott as Indiana Colony; the name Pasadena, a Chippewa word meaning “crown of the valley,” was adopted in 1875. The city’s growth as a winter resort and citrus center was stimulated by the Santa Fe Railway, and subsequent freeway construction brought it within easy commuting distance to Los Angeles, which lies 12 miles (19 km) southwest. As of the census of 2000, there were 139,529 people, 50,307 households, and 32,749 families residing in the city. The population density was 8,720.9 people per square mile (3,367.0/km²). There were 54,367 housing units at an average density of 3,398.1 per square mile (1,312.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 45.0% White, 30.8% African American, 0.5% Native American, 3.3% Asian, 0.1% As of the 2010 census, there were 144,229 people residing in the city. A total of 38.2% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. ▪ Pasadena’s economy is partly based on the California Institute of Technology (1891), which includes the Jet Propulsion Laboratory operated in conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The city has become a center of scientific research and light manufacturing, chiefly of precision instruments and electronic, aircraft, and missile components. ▪ Pasadena City (community) College (1924), (1945), and Art Center College of Design (1930) are located in the city, which is also the home of the Pasadena Playhouse. The Norton Simon Museum of Art (formerly Pasadena Art Institute and Pasadena Museum of Modern Art) is renowned for its collection, as is the Huntington Library in nearby San Marino. The Pacific Asia Museum contains exhibits on the history and arts of Asia and the Pacific; its grounds contain a Chinese courtyard garden and koi ponds. The city is perhaps most famous for its New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses, first held in 1890, which features a televised parade attended by several hundred thousand people., The , a National Historic Landmark, is host of the first and most famous college football postseason bowl game, the Tournament of Roses Rose Bowl Game, every New Year's Day. In 1895, the Tournament of Roses Association was formed to take charge of the parade. In 1902, the association declared that a football game would be added to the day's events. This was the first post-season college football game to be played on New Year's Day; many other football stadiums followed suit. After two decades, the game outgrew its original facility, and a new stadium was constructed in the Arroyo Seco area. The new stadium hosted its first New Year's Day football game in 1923. It was soon christened "The Rose Bowl", as was the game itself. Many young professionals live in Pasadena and residents tend to be liberal. The public schools in Pasadena are above average.
