More than half of this stock is shared by the three biggest libraries of Budapest, viz. the National Szé- (j'héiiyi Library (1748), the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1159), and the University Library, Budapest (1035). In the provinces, the collection of incunabula housed in the Li- brary of the Kalocsa Cathedral and that in the Episcopal Library of Székesfehérvár follow in order of magnitude, possessing over 500 copies each. The Library of the Esztergom Cathedral is known to contain 290 copies, the Library of the Abbey of Pannonhalma 236, and the Simor Library of Esztergom has 232 copies in its possession. The Library of the Episcopal Semi- nary of Győr possesses approximately 200, and the former Fran- ciscan Library of Gyöngyös, in the custody of the National Széchényi Library, has preserved about the same number of incunabula. The Great Library of the Transtibiscan Reformed Church District of Debrecen contains 145, paid the Diocesan Li- brary of Szombathely has 102 fifteenth-century printed books in its possession. Nearly 700 incunabula of the national holdings are shared to different degrees by 44 other libraries and institutions.

The following paper offers an overview of the history of much of the research and scholarship concerning the figure of the king in European folklore (particularly the folklore traditions of Central Europe), followed by a discussion of the historical lay- ers of inter-ethnic (international) Matthias folklore. Keywords: King Matthias, Corvin, Hunyadi, renaissance, myth, legend, folklore, Hungary, Central Europe Kralj Matjaz King Matthias of the Slovenes, successor to Kresnik, and legendary conqueror of the Turks. Like Kresnik, Matjaz too was married to his sister, Alencica, whom, in legend, he rescued from the Turks, or in Slovenian traditional ballad, from the underworld. Matjaz is also a king in the mountain, sleeping till the day of Slovenia’s utter need, when he will emerge and save everything… It is said that during World War II the peasants thought King Matjaz would ride again and save Slovenia (Funk & Wagnalls, 1950, v. 1, 589–90). The above citation is the only entry in which reference is made to King Matthias in the 1950 Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary of Folklore Mythol- ogy and Legend, which to this day remains the most famous such reference work. Yet in Hungary and the bordering countries it is a well-known fact that the deeds of King Mátyás (Matthias) Corvin (original family name: Hunyadi) are of interest to this day not only to historians and cultural historians, but also to folklorists.

  • BOOK REVIEWS Egy Elfeledett Magyar Királyi Dinasztia: A
Hungarian Historical Review 10, no. 2 (2021): 382–385 BOOK REVIEWS Egy elfeledett magyar királyi dinasztia: a Szapolyaiak [A forgotten Hungarian royal dynasty: The Szapolyais]. Edited by Pál Fodor and Szabolcs Varga. Budapest: Research Centre for the Humanities, 2020. Published within the framework of the Mohács 1526–2026 Reconstruction and Memory project, Egy elfeledett magyar királyi dinasztia: a Szapolyaiak [A forgotten Hungarian royal dynasty: The Szapolyais] fills a major gap in the secondary literature and also offers an encouraging springboard for further research. One of the important objectives of the book is to present the history of one of the most important noble, aristocratic, and royal families of the late Middle Ages and the early modern period in a consistent manner, thus addressing a serious lacuna in Hungarian historiography and providing a summary of the most recent findings. The book does this by focusing on a topic and a historical period in which we have come to see very differently as a result of research which has been underway over the course of the past few years and decades. The volume is not a traditional monograph, however. Rather, it is a volume of studies which summarizes knowledge of the subject at the moment, offering presentations of the findings concerning the period by established researchers in a manner that will be engaging and precise to specialists but also accessible to the general readership. The editors may have chosen this form (a collection of studies) precisely because it has enabled the fourteen authors to produce a work which encompasses everything we know about the period and the dynasty, from political history and royal symbols to religious and literary history and material culture.
