Pablo Trapero’s “The Clan,” Pablo Larrain’s “The Club,” Federico Veiroj’s “The Apostate” and Paula Ortiz’s “The Bride” also made the best pic cut for the third Platino kudofest, awards aimed at highlighting talent and movies from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Starring Elena Anaya and Benjamín Vicuña as a couple battling to overcome the loss of their small son, “Memory” competed at 2015’s Venice Days and took the Silver Colon at Spain’s Huelva Fest. Sold by Germany’s Global Screen, it most recently received plaudits from critics and audiences at this week’s Latin American Fest in Lleida, Spain. Handled by Filmax Intl., melancholy friendship dramedy “Truman” has swept awards at multiple events this season. Produced by Spain’s Impossible Films, the seventh feature of Cesc Gay is co-produced out of Argentina by K & S and Telefonica Studios/Telefe, two shingles behind Damian Szifron’s “Wild Tales” — which swept the 2nd Platino Awards — and “The Clan” — also in the running this year. Produced by Peru’s Pendulo Films and Tondero Films, Argentina’s Cepa Audiovisual and Colombia’s Cinerama and Proyectil, “Magallanes,” which is the directorial debut of Peruvian thesp Salvador del Solar (“Pantaleon y las Visitadores”), is one of the highest- profile titles from a national cinema, Peru, which, like Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela and this year Chile, has seen local movies fire up appreciable market share at their domestic box office. -

At the 91st Oscars in February, the bland Green Book beat the superior BlackKklansman to the best picture award, although Spike Leewon his first competitive Oscar in the adapted screenplay category. Rami Malik scooped best actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, but best actress Olivia Colman (The Favourite) stole the evening with one of the funniest and most self- deprecating acceptance speeches ever (complete with raspberry-blowing). More significantly, Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma won for cinematography, direction and best foreign language film, despite naysayers’ complaints that Netflix-backed movies were essentially made-for-TV films. That attitude is now history: in the forthcoming awards season, the platform has several contenders, including Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. The Irishman marked a watershed moment for “digital de-ageing”, with innovative technology allowing Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci to play characters much younger than themselves. We’ve seen de-aging elsewhere (from Captain Marvel to Gemini Man), but never this unobtrusively. Alongside the release of its first original animated feature, Sergio Pablos’s Klaus, Netflix also picked up distribution rights for I Lost My Body, which made history when it took the top prize in the Critics’ Week section at Cannes in May. More family-friendly releases – Frozen II, Toy Story 4 and a weirdly photorealist rehash of The Lion King – may have dominated the box office in 2019, but I Lost My Body was my favourite animated film of the year. -

The Films of Ciro Guerra and the Making of Cosmopolitan Spaces in Colombian Cinema Maria Luna and Philippe Meers Abstract: This article proposes to use the concept of “cosmopolitan cinematic margins” to analyse the paradoxical meeting of the cosmopolitan meaning and discourses of Ciro Guerra’s Colombian films and the spatial restrictions and immobility of the rural and remote places in which they are set. Such areas as seen on screen are usually interpreted by urban audiences as exotic locations, independently of their actual distance from cities. The article explores how films that, at first sight, show images of marginal and remote places like the Colombian Amazonian Jungle, when inserted into a global context—such as the hierarchical system of international film festivals—become symbols of cosmopolitan cinematic margins, and represent a country in the global spaces that legitimise the importance of that country’s film production. The cosmopolitan cinematic margins in the films of Guerra are then strategically situated in environments of global mobility and international prestige. Introduction The three feature films directed thus far by Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra— Wandering Shadows (La sombra del caminante, 2004), The Wind Journeys (Los viajes del viento, 2009) and Embrace of the Serpent (El abrazo de la serpiente, 2015)— were all produced by the independent production house Ciudad Lunar. They show the dynamics and tensions in the making of a cosmopolitan cinematic space within a peripheral cinema or “small cinema”, expressions that will be used in this article to remark the particular position of the cinemas of the “remaining countries” beyond the dominant production of Argentina, Mexico and Brazil—also known as “the big three” (Falicov and Middents 115). -

Falling into the Embrace of the Serpent by Deborah Shaw Mediático is delighted to present a consideration of the much heralded Colombian film Embrace of the Serpent by Deborah Shaw, Reader in Film Studies at the University of Portsmouth. Her research interests include transnational film theory, and Latin American cinema, and she has published widely in these areas. She is the founding co-editor of the Routledge journal Transnational Cinemas, and her books include Contemporary Latin American Cinema: Ten Key Films (Continuum Publishers, 2003), The Three Amigos: The Transnational Filmmaking of Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Alfonso Cuarón (Manchester University Press, 2013), The Transnational Fantasies of Guillermo del Toro, co-edited with Ann Davies and Dolores Tierney (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), and Latin American Women Filmmakers: Production, Politics, Poetics, co-edited with Deborah Martin for the World Cinema Series (forthcoming at I.B.Tauris). Every so often a special film comes along and slaps us in the face and demands our attention. A film that reminds us why we became and remain academics, critics and teachers. We take on these roles because we love films that teach us about the world we live in, and because we want to share our enthusiasm and that knowledge. Learning and sharing knowledge is one of the central themes of Embrace of the Serpent. It is an award-winning film, securing Colombia’s first Oscar nomination, for director Ciro Guerra previously known for two films that were well received on the festival circuit: Wandering Shadows (2004) and The Wind Journeys (2009). Like Guerra’s previous films Embrace of the Serpent has been exhibited on the festival circuit, but it has also found its way on to global screens small and large. -

Synopsis Paul Carpenter is a new intern at the mysterious London firm J.W. Wells & Co. Sure, Paul is grateful to have a stable job at a respectable and worldwide company, however, he and Sophie, Paul’s hate-at-first-sight love interest, become steadily aware that their employers are anything but conventional. Initially they notice just little peculiarities, like the extremely peculiar receptionist, a long stapler moving on its own, or those bizarre artifacts in the company’s basement (such as several contracts for people’s souls and a Portable Door!) But when goblins take over at the office after-hours, it’s pretty much confirmed that J.W. Wells & Co. is into a bit more magic than mediation. Harry Potter meets The Office. Genre: Comedy/Fantasy/Adventure Live Action Feature Film Anticipated Rating: PG Tagline: Paul Carpenter, an intern at the mysterious London firm J.W. Wells & Co., learns that his employer deals in magical transactions. Director’s Statement “The story explores what it is to be in your 20’s, searching for your place, discovering who you are as an adult, coming up against a world that is challenging you constantly. And a reminder that we all seek the pure joy of elevating the mundane to the magical. For this film, I’m looking to Kaufman pictures -Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-films that fuse emotional impact and humour with a heightened world of fantasy and imagination. A certain carelessness with the camera that makes the wildness of what you’re seeing, more surprising.
