SMITHSONIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE EARTH SCIENCES • NUMBER 15 Sands in the Alboran Sea: A Model of Input in a Deep Marine Basin Daniel Jean Stanley, Gilbert Kelling, Juan-Antonio Vera, and Harrison Sheng SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION PRESS City of Washington 1975 ABSTRACT Stanley, Daniel Jean, Gilbert Kelling, Juan-Antonio Vera, and Harrison Sheng. Sands in the Alboran Sea: A Model of Input in a Deep Marine Basin. Smith- sonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences, number 15, 51 pages, 23 figures, 8 tables, 1975.—The Alboran Sea, an almost totally land-enclosed, mountain- bounded (Rif, Betic ranges) basin, lies east of Gilbraltar in the westernmost Mediterranean. A petrologic study of the sand fraction in river, river mouth, and beach samples collected on the coast of the Alboran Sea defines the compo- sition and distribution of the principal light and heavy mineral groups along its margins. The investigation details 20 mineralogical provinces on the southern Iberian and northern Moroccan margins and the Strait of Gibraltar sector and identifies the major source terrains and fluvial and marine point sources of terrigenous sediment entering the basin. Significant sample-to-sample changes in the proportion of mineralogical com- ponents are attributed to marine processes, particularly nearshore currents, which move sands laterally along the coast and, while so doing, modify the proportions of light and heavy mineral components. Lateral trends observed within Moroccan and Spanish mineralogical provinces provide evidence on the actual sense of nearshore sediment dispersal. Marine transport agents have a more pronounced effect on the light mineral fraction, while even unstable heavy mineral species appear to suffer less modification as a result of the transport in the marine environment.

  • MOROCCO: EARTHQUAKE 1 March 2004
MOROCCO: EARTHQUAKE 1 March 2004 The Federation’s mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity. It is the world’s largest humanitarian organization and its millions of volunteers are active in over 181 countries. In Brief Appeal (Preliminary) no. 06/04; Operations Update no. 2; Period covered: 26 – 29 February 2004; Appeal coverage: 100% (note: contributions are now being recorded in the Federation’s systems, and will be reflected shortly on the web page for this operation). Appeal history: • Launched on a provisional basis on 24 February 2004 for CHF 2,832,000 (USD 2,282,852 or EUR 1,799,553) for 6 months to assist 30,000 beneficiaries. • Disaster Relief Emergency Funds (DREF) allocated: CHF 75,000. • With Operations Update no. 2, this is now considered a full (and final) Appeal. Outstanding needs: none; this appeal is fully covered. Related Emergency or Annual Appeals: 2004 Annual Appeal for North Africa (no. 01.88/2004) Operational Summary: With after-shocks and tremors being felt continuously in the northern Moroccan province of Al Hoceima, the entire population of approximately half a million people remains in a state of alert. Exposure to freezing night temperatures together with occasional rainfall is a major concern since some 30,000 of the directly and indirectly affected people are living and sleeping outdoors, mostly in makeshift, improvised shelters. The immediate distribution of tents and blankets is therefore considered a pressing priority. Within its own capacities and available resources, the Moroccan Red Crescent’s (MRC’s) response, supported by the Federation’s Field Assessment Coordination Team (FACT), has been perceived by the affected population as extremely positive, but there is growing pressure on the national society to fill in gaps in the overall response.

PACIFIC DISASTER MANAGEMENT INFORMATION NETWORK (PDMIN) 1 Jarrett White Road MCPA-DM, Tripler AMC, HI 96859-5000 Telephone: 808.433.7035 · [email protected] · http://www.coe-dmha.org Asia-Pacific Daily Report February 24, 2004 Asia Bans on US and Canadian poultry products following outbreaks of avian flu; UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warns of economic costs in Asia The EU and South Korea today reportedly banned all US poultry product imports after the outbreak of the highly contagious strain of the avian flu in the state of Texas, where the strain was reclassified from low pathogenic to highly contagious over the weekend. However, Dr. Ron DeHaven in US Department of Agriculture said that the avian flu in the US is not the same H5N1 strain that jumped to humans and has killed at least 22 people in Asia. DeHaven said that it was the first time a high-pathogenic avian flu has been found in the US since 1983-84. Two other strains of avian flu have turned up recently in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. However, there are no known connections between those outbreaks and that in Texas, and they reportedly do not resemble the H5N1 as well. Meanwhile, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan have also banned Canadian poultry imports after the discovery of avian flu on a Canadian farm. Canadian authorities also say the strain there is not the H5N1. The H5N1 bird flu has hit Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. Pakistan and Taiwan have been hit by a milder strain of the flu, which is not considered a threat to humans.

  • Effects of Earthquakes on Buildings in the Ibero-Maghrebian Region José Antonio Aparicio Florido
Chapter Effects of Earthquakes on Buildings in the Ibero-Maghrebian Region José Antonio Aparicio Florido Abstract The types of damage caused by earthquakes in buildings are closely related to the design and building techniques with which they have been built and the quality of the construction materials used. Most of countries with moderate to high seismic risk areas have implemented earthquake-resistant standards to prevent the collapse of buildings and minimize the severity of the damage. However, every new strong shake that occurs around the world reveals bad construction practices that could have been avoided, and the inadequacy or non-existence of earthquake-resistant standards aimed at reducing vulnerability to non-catastrophic levels. Based on the EMS-98 scale, in this chapter we will analyze three case studies of the Ibero- Maghrebian region that have been using similar construction patterns with similar catastrophic results for buildings despite the different dates in which they occurred and the different earthquake-resistant standards: SW Cape St. Vincent earthquake of February 28, 1969; Al Hoceima earthquake of February 24, 2004; and Lorca earthquake of May 11, 2011. Keywords: earthquakes, damage, buildings, standards, shear cracks, X-shaped cracks, plastic hinges, soft-story, vulnerability 1. Introduction The Ibero-Maghrebian region comprises the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, (including Andalusia, Murcia and Alicante) and North Africa from the Atlas range to the Mediterranean sea, bordering Tunisia to the east and the Atlantic coast of Portugal to the west, embracing Morocco and Algeria [1]. The seismicity of this region is characterized by the N-S to NW-SE convergence between Eurasian and Nubian plates [2]―with a possible rotational axis to the north of Canary Islands― and by the occurrence of shallow earthquakes (<30 km).

The earthquake (6.5 on the Richter scale) hit at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time with its epicenter approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Al Hoceima. Al Hoceima is one of the largest cities in northern Morocco located 185 miles (295 km) northeast of Rabat. Towns and villages to the southeast of Al Hoceima were hardest hit. Six villages, including Imzouren and Bni- Hadifa, with a combined population of well over 300,000, were badly affected. The town of Ait Kamara, with its mud- brick houses, was completely destroyed. Demand for tents therefore remains high, with each household hoping to receive at least one tent. The Red Crescent Society of Morocco (MRCS), supported by the Federation, has distributed a total of 5,552 tents to direct beneficiaries in the seven most affected rural communes and the urban commune of Imzouren city.
