This popular annual celebration marks the reopening of the Arboretum’s full bonsai display for the season and includes educational programming related to bonsai trees and maintenance. As part of the event, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., representatives from the local Blue Ridge Bonsai Society will be on site to present informal programs related to basic bonsai information, including how to get started and how to maintain a bonsai, as well as discussing what design features are desirable in a good bonsai. These programs are free to the public and club members will also be available to answer questions. “We are excited and thankful to have members from the Blue Ridge Bonsai Society at the Arboretum to share their knowledge with our visitors and members, and help us celebrate the reopening of our bonsai display,” said Arthur Joura, award-winning bonsai curator at The North Carolina Arboretum. Asheville Zipline Canopy Adventures: is a 124 acre zipline course that takes you into 150 year old trees that overlook historic downtown and the Blue Ridge Mountains. While providing more than 88,000 jobs, the program is ensuring that high quality resources, particularly in science and technology facilities, are available to students and researchers as North Carolina transitions from a manufacturing-based economy to one that is more knowledge-based and able to compete in the global environment. Over the last year, the campuses have made considerable progress. • All 318 of the bond projects are now under design, in construction, or completed. Through July 2007, 10 projects are under design, 80 are in construction, and 228 have been completed. • $2.38 billion or 95% of bond program dollars are now committed to design or construction contracts, or completed work. • The program will exceed $2.25 billion (90%) in expenditures in September 2007. • As part of its continuing commitment to contribute resources to its capital needs, the University has requested and the General Assembly has approved over $3 billion in projects from nonappropriated sources since 2000. • The program continues to exceed State goals recommended for Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs) by more than 67%.

(May 9, 2016) – Tiny trees will be make a big impact this weekend as The North Carolina Arboretum, a 434-acre public garden located just south of Asheville, celebrates World Bonsai Day on Saturday, May 14, 2016. World Bonsai Day is an international event dedicated to furthering bonsai awareness and appreciation worldwide. Initiated by the World Bonsai Friendship Federation (WBFF) in honor of Mr. Saburo Kato, the world bonsai patron and founder of WBFF, World Bonsai Day is recognized annually on the second Saturday of May. In addition to the event, the Arboretum will reopen its full bonsai display to the public for the first time in 2016; the display is located in the Arboretum’s newly renovated Bonsai Exhibition Garden. “Because plants in containers, including bonsai, are more vulnerable to freeze damage, the Arboretum’s bonsai are removed from display in the garden through the winter months and stored in an unheated shelter,” explained Arthur Joura, the award-winning bonsai curator at The North Carolina Arboretum. “World Bonsai Day is a fitting time for celebrating the return of the full bonsai display to the garden, and we are glad to once again be sharing these miniature marvels with our visitors.” During the World Bonsai Day event, Joura will host a live demonstration from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. inside the Bonsai Exhibition Garden.

    NOVEMBER 2018 – MARCH 2019 GROW News, Classes, Events & More Continuous Improvement by George Briggs, Executive Director During the late 1990s, as the Arboretum grew beyond its early entrepreneurial phase, we began to implement a new management model. Even then, we sensed the increased speed with which communication, technology and information were moving, and we made two strategic decisions that continue to define our operations today. The first was to change our view of strategy from “continual” (happening periodically) to “continuous” (happening without interruption). Our Strategy Council – three directors and myself – continues to meet weekly, but more importantly, stays in constant communication as we navigate an aggressive curve of change while keeping strategic thinking front and center. The second decision involved viewing improvement, like strategy, as a concept that never rests and that permeates through our culture here. This commitment to continuous improvement has led to many innovations in our programs and facilities. For example, our Branching Out newsletter and our Growing in Mind adult education catalog have both performed quite well as separate publications. However, based on CONTENTS surveys of our supporters, members and students, we have combined the publications, fine-tuned the content and scheduled three issues per year. The resulting product, 3 Featured - Winter Lights GROW, will give you more of the information you want, more often, while also providing more funds for mission delivery. 4 News & Notes As you walk around the Arboretum campus, you will find continuous improvement 5 Becoming a “Maker” all around you. Changes this year include renovating the Plants of Promise Garden, new Holiday Decorating with Plants plantings and landscaping along the entrance road, and Willow Pond, where significant 6 Exhibits renovations will begin shortly.
