  • Graphic Storytelling: Exploring Contemporary Comics (Issues and Problems in Twentieth-Century Literature and Culture)
1 Rutgers University, Department of English Spring 2013 Graphic Storytelling: Exploring Contemporary Comics (Issues and Problems in Twentieth-Century Literature and Culture) 03:350:393 Instructor: Tahneer Oksman Murray Hall, Room 301 Contact: [email protected] Tues./Thurs., 1:10 – 2:30 PM Office: Murray Hall, 036A Office Hour: Tues., 2:30 – 3:30 PM and by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION In her introduction to The Best American Comics 2011, cartoonist Alison Bechdel writes, “Art and language are always in flux, of course, but the somewhat younger mode of comics seems to be in a particularly molten state. Close readers may observe rivulets of lava cooling into new conventions right before their eyes” (xv). In this course, we will read a variety of contemporary comics, mostly from North America, in order to examine how comics can help us rethink genre. Specifically, we will attempt to decipher what graphic narratives can teach us about the assumptions that we make about storytelling conventions, and how contemporary cartoonists play with or breach such conventions. Some forms of storytelling that we will consider through readings of comics of various lengths, including texts commonly referred to as “graphic novels,” are documentary, fantasy, diary, short story, and memoir. We will focus heavily on the formal complexities of reading visual-textual interactions, with the goal of developing a common vocabulary for thinking, discussing, and writing about comics. We will address questions such as, is there an equivalent, in comics, of what we commonly refer to as “voice” in works of prose? In what ways do comics differ from other media, including film and prose? We will also briefly consider digital comics, and the ways that they force us to rethink the possibilities of the medium.

  • Gotham Episode 3 Review: Penguin Returns, Catwoman Eludes Gordon
Gotham Episode 3 Review: Penguin Returns, Catwoman Eludes Gordon Author : Robert D. Cobb This episode could have been a filler episode. It has a non-descript villain. I got the feeling that it was building to the next part of the story. Fortunately, there were some awesome scenes and a cool twist at the end that created some intriguing possibilities. Bruce Wayne gets files related to his parents’ murder. It was just another part of his evolution into Batman. The Penguin also made his return. Penguin came back to Gotham was back to his old tricks. He managed to get inside the rival crime family that is opposing Carmine Falcone. There is no doubt that he will cross paths with Fish Mooney again. Robin Lord-Taylor was the standout performer in the episode once again. Another great scene was the “Cat” and Jim Gordon scene. The Catwoman and Gordon scene was interesting. It was odd that he went down into a sewer and didn’t have her get the wallet. She made him look foolish by escaping. It was another reminder of what she will become and it was appropriate for the character. It was one of the best scenes in the episode. Speaking of Fish Mooney, she was scheming again. She told the two cops about Gordon’s “murder” of the Penguin. It set up a confrontation between the two parties. They clearly don’t like each other and will eventually come to blows. It was clever to plant those seeds of doubt about Gordon. Mooney remains an interesting character to watch as the series evolves because she is proving to be unpredictable.

  • These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things!
Hello, BAA Parents! We are looking forward to seeing you very soon! New York City is an exciting place to live. The city is a different experience for everyone who lives here. Whenever we have friends visit, we never know what kind of "New York" activities to do, since we're not tourists! Since we know many of you will have a lot of time to kill here in NYC, we asked our staff how they would spend an obligation-free day off in the city and where they like to go. Our answers are below. As you plan for your stay in New York, we thought this might be helpful. Please feel free to contact any of us with questions! At the bottom of this e-mail, please find information about getting around in the city. The subway is your friend! THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS! Rachel Brown ([email protected]) If you had a day off with no obligations, how would you spend it? Relaxing on the beach in Coney Island in Brooklyn (take the subway!) with my friends family, listening to music and playing awesome summer games including something with water pistols. Favorite restaurant for dinner: Patzeria Family & Friends on 48th and 8th- Great Italian Food and very reasonable prices right in Midtown!!! Favorite place to grab a coffee: I am obsessed with Dunkin Donuts- lame I know but I love their iced coffee! Favorite Broadway show: Everyone should see The Play That Goes Wrong. It's not a musical and is now playing at New World Stages (so technically off-Broadway now) but my tummy and face hurt from laughing so hard- old fashion Shtick comedy and just so much fun! Favorite place to shop: La Duca Shoes of course (mostly window shop :)) Favorite neighborhood to walk around: Along the Hudson River on the West Side down in the Village around Christopher Street.

GOTHAM 2nd Revised Network Draft (013114) CLEAN Written by Bruno Heller "GOTHAM" Written by Bruno Heller 2nd Network Draft © 2014 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. This script is the property of Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. No portion of this script may be performed, reproduced or used by any means, or disclosed to, quoted or published in any medium without the prior written consent of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. TEASER FADE IN: EXT. GOTHAM CITY - DUSK (D/1) We’re ten stories above the street, perched on the edge of an old office building. A stone GARGOYLE gazes blindly at a majestic mountain range of Gothic stone spires and sleek glass towers under a darkening blue sky, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. SELINA KYLE (14) - an elfin girl dressed in street Goth style, the future CATWOMAN - appears alongside the gargoyle and scans the streets below, a hunter searching for prey. Without any hesitation, she launches herself from the edge of the roof onto a fire escape one floor below and - using drainpipes, window ledges, and light fixtures - descends to street level with amazing nerve and agility. EXT. THEATER DISTRICT STREET. GOTHAM Imagine New York City’s Times Square in the 1970s and then turn the dial to eleven - squalid but sexy, dangerous but glamorous. Colorful GOTHAMITES and gawking TOURISTS watch TWO GANG MEMBERS brawling violently in the middle of the road. One gangster wears crude HOME MADE BODY ARMOR and wields a machete, the other wears a garish ZOOT SUIT and is armed with a hammer. Nobody notices Selina slide from a store awning onto the sidewalk.
