II. -Object. The Society is instituted to examine, preserve, and illustrate the Archaeology and Natural History of the County of Derby. HI. Operation. The means which the Society shall employ for ettecting its objects are : I. — Meetings for the purpose of Reading Papers, ihe Exhibition of Antiquities, etc., and the discussion of subjects connected therewith. 2. — General Meetings each year at given places rendered interesting by their antiquities or by their natural development. 3. —The publication of original papers and ancient documents, etc. IV. Officers. The Ofificers of the Society shall consist of a President and Vice- Presidents, whose elections shall be for life ; and an Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary, who shall be elected annually. V. Council. The General Management of the affairs and property of the Society shall be vested in a Council, consisting of the President, ——— VIU ' RULES. Vice-Presidents, Honorary Treasurer, Honorary Secretary, and twenty-four Members, elected from the general body of the Subscribers ; eitjht of such twenty-four Members to retire annually in rotation, but to be eligible for re-election. All vacancies occurring during the year to be provisionally filled up by the Council. Vr. Admission of Members. The election of Members, who must be proposed and seconded in writing by two Members of the Society, shall take place at any meeting of the Council, or at any General Meetings of the Society. Vn. —Subscription. Each Member on election after March 31st, 1878, shall pay an •Entrance Fee of Five Shillings, and an Annual Subscription of Ten Shillings and Sixpence. All subscriptions to become due, in advance, on the ist January each year, and to be paid to the Treasurer. A composition of Five Guineas to constitute Life Membership. The composition of Life Members and the Admission Fee of Ordinary Members to be funded, and the interest arising from them to be applied to the general objects of the Society. Ladies to be eligible as Members on the same terms. No one shall be entitled to his privileges as a Member of the Society whose subscription is six months in arrear. Vni. Honorary Members. The Council shall have the power of electing distinguished Antiquaries as Honorary Members. Honorary Members shall not be resident in the County, and shall not exceed twelve in number. Their privileges shall be the same as those of Ordinary Members. IX. Meetings of Council. The Council shall meet not less than six times in each year, at such place or places as may be determined upon. Special meetings may also be held at the request of the President, or —— kULKS. IX Five Members of ihe Society. I'ive members of Council to form a (juorum. X. —SUB-COMMITTEKS. 'The Council shall have the power of appointing from time to time such sectional or Sub-Committees as may seem desirable for the carrying out of special objects. Such Sectional or Sub- committees to report their proceedings to the Council for confirmation. XI. General Meetings. The Annual Meeting of the Society shall be held in January each year, when the Accounts, properly audited, and a Report shall be presented, the Officers elected, and vacancies in the Council filled for the ensuing year. The Council may at any time call a General Meeting, specifying the object for which that Meeting is to be held. A clear seven days' notice of all General Meetings to be sent to each Member. XII. Alteration of Rules. No alteration in the Rules of the Society shall be made except by a majority of two-thirds of the Members present at an Annual or other General Meeting of the Society. Full notice of any intended alteration to be sent to each Member at least seven days before the date of such Meeting. LIST OF MEMBERS.     The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology th The 20 Revision October 2018 The MacKenzie Chronology Project The Project In the late 1990’s Nick Leefe and Bob Beck launched an effort to document the physical presence and movements of the great architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie. That effort sparked club secretaries, historians, architects, professional writers, enthusiasts – in short, a global community of MacKenzie admirers – to share their knowledge. This, the 20th Revision of “The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology,” is the latest product of that collective and continuing generosity, and once again expands upon the previous revision. Why are MacKenzie’s whereabouts important? A timeline establishes a foundation of fact. Upon this foundation researchers can build their narratives of history. Without this fact base, large gaps in time appear, and speculation is the all too-common and unfortunate result - the quality of scholarship is impoverished.     1 Header April 2021 Body of text A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF THE VILLAGE DURING THE PANDEMIC As this edition of the News is published just over a year after the first national lockdown, I thought it would be good to remind ourselves of all the amazing support and lockdown activities that have taken place. I refer to some individuals by name but please forgive the fact that I am unable to name check everyone. As we went into the first lockdown the Parish Council provided funds for some mobile phones and the shop swung into action setting up prescription and food delivery/emergency help Whatsapp groups as well as establishing a team of street wardens to keep a check on any residents who may not have had access to social media. Both prescription delivery from Eyam and street wardens are still in operation. Peter O’Brien, our District Councillor, kept us posted on information from Derbyshire County Council and, most importantly for many of us, details of bin collections! Even during these difficult times stalwart volunteers, along with managers Sarah and Andrew kept the shop open and it even went online. The virtual shop idea which evolved from that is developing further and will hopefully mean an expanded range of goods available online sometime over the summer. Our local Spar (White’s)introduced a delivery service which along with our shop provided a lifeline to those who were shielding and found it impossible to get a delivery from one of the large supermarkets. It was hard to go hungry when Terry from the Sir William decided to start fish and chip Friday with delivery by Diane and Bob Wilson and John and Pauline Bowman.

As promised in the last volume of the Marriage Registers of Derbyshire, the marriage records of St. Alkmund's form the first instalment of the Registers of the County Town. The Editors do not doubt that these will prove especially interesting to Derbyshire people. In Volume V they hope to print further instalments of town registers in the shape of those of St. Michael's and also some village registers. It will be noticed that St. Alkmund's register begins at the earliest possible date, 1538, but of the remainder, two do not start till the seventeenth century and one, that of Quarndon, synchronizes with the passing of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act. 1379092 It will be convenient to give here a list of the Derby- shire parishes of which the Registers have been printed in this series: Volume I.     Church Broughton Parish, Derbyshire: An oral history, 1900-1940 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Janet Arthur De Montfort University June 2019 Abstract This study is an oral history of a Derbyshire dairying parish during the first forty years of the twentieth century. The aim was to discover the nature and cohesion of society in a parish with no resident lord of the manor, the effects on the parish of changes in agricultural practice and the impact of government interventions on the lives of individuals. The lives of residents were affected by the history and layout of the parish, based on the geography and previous ownership. Having no resident lord of the manor generated a social structure with three layers: firstly, seven key people, outsiders who did not own land, secondly, networks of small landowners and artisans, who had lived there for generations, finally, labourers, many also families of long standing. Religion was important in supporting this social structure. Being an ‘open’ parish had enabled a chapel to be built and the provision of a school, though not all children attended this school. Through widespread ownership, there was a freedom to live and work without being beholden to neighbouring estates, as alternative employment could be found elsewhere for any surplus workers. Mechanisation improved farming practice, but, though government intervention during the First World War helped, the downturn afterwards and competition between farmers meant dairying was precarious, until the foundation of the Milk Marketing Board in 1933 to control production and price. The sale of the Duke of Devonshire’s farms in 1918 to the occupiers and the County Council removed the prestige that his tenants had enjoyed.

His photo is of a Spring Starflower or Springstar , part of the onion and amyrillis family. The flowers are honey scented, which is no doubt what attracted the ant. Alfie is a keen photographer with his own Olympus DSLR camera, and this scene caught his eye under a large yew tree at the bottom of Church Lane. His creativity is not limited just to photography: Alfie loves cats and in Year 5 he and a friend made a comic called Cat Man! A total of 39 people took part in our photographic competition this year and we hope you had fun and found it an interesting challenge. We have all had to adapt our ways of doing things over the last year and transferring this competition to an online format, though different, has been a great success. Now that we are beginning to open up and get back to our normal lives, maybe this is the blueprint for the future of the competition? 39 people submitted a total of 124 photographs across the four categories, with nearly 100 taking part in voting for their favourite entry.
