Mystery Writers of America Presents 2014 Grand Master Interview Mystery Writers of America presents 2014 Grand Master Interview Wednesday, April 30, 2014 - 5:00 to 6:00 pm Grand Hyatt New York Broadway Room – Conference Level East 42nd Street at Grand Central Station Please join us as we celebrate Robert Crais and Carolyn Hart – our 2014 Grand Masters. In 1976, after years of amateur film-making and short story writing, Robert Crais moved to Hollywood and found work as a screenwriter, crafting scripts for such major TV shows as Hill Street Blues, Cagney & Lacey, and Miami Vice. In the mid-1980s he left television and began writing novels full-time. Upon the death of his father in 1985, he was inspired to create his main character Elvis Cole using elements of his own life as the basis of the story. It resulted in his breakout novel, The Monkey’s Raincoat, which was nominated for Best First Novel Edgar Award. Eleven books followed in the Elvis Cole series. Joe Pike, Elvis’ partner, and Carol Starkey, an LAPD bomb expert, are recurring characters and also have their own books. Crais is known for his thought provoking plots and his ability to weave present day issues and social commentary into his mysteries. He has been nominated for every major award in the mystery field. Carolyn Hart is a native of Oklahoma City, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oklahoma, and began her writing career at her local newspaper. In 1964 Hart won a contest looking for a mystery novel that would appeal to teen girls which resulted in her first published book. She wrote a number of young adult books over the next seven years. In 1972, she turned to writing for an adult audience and has published fifty novels, a remarkable achievement for any author. Hart's series Death on Demand contains twenty-three novels, including: Southern Ghost, Death Walked In and Dead Days of Summer. She writes two other series (the Henrie O mysteries and the Bailey Ruth Raeburn series), and has published a total of eleven books in both. In addition, she has written numerous stand-alone suspense novels. She has been nominated for many writing awards, and is a past president of Sisters in Crime. They will be interviewed by our 2013 Raven Award recipient, Oline Cogdill. Oline is a trusted book reviewer and has been handling our Grand Master interviews for many years. • Tor in Oklahoma All the Experiences That Went Into the Making of the Nation Have Been Speeded Up
Tor in Oklahoma all the experiences that went into the making of the nation have been speeded up. Here all the American traits have been intensified. The one who can interpret Oklahoma can grasp the meaning of America in the modern world." —Angie Debo, Oklahoma: Footloose and Fancy Free, 1949 Every one of these United States touts its unique place in the American Story, but few have as curious a history as Oklahoma. Its place on the continent would have predicted statehood much sooner than 1907, when Oklahoma became the 46th Star. But the federal Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the establishment of an Indian Territory would put the land on a different path, diverging from the logical progression of the white man's Manifest Destiny. csnl^afo /jeu-cr The relocated tribes were promised their new land "as long as the waters run" by U.S. treaty. The tribes would find the promise broken in the latter years of the nineteenth century when Indian Territory saw the breakup of reservations, and then in the early twentieth century when the collective tribes were denied a state of their own. Instead, the territory would join with Oklahoma Territory to form the new state. When areas of the territories were opened for settlement through land runs and lotteries, African Ameri cans came to fulfill the promise of equality, only to see the promise shattered with the establishment of Jim Crow laws. Even the "promised land" promoted during the runs and lotteries would ultimately lead to broken dreams for many Euro-Americans, who would see desperate hardship in the depression, drought, and farm crisis of the 1930s.

  • Carolyn Hart, Text Only
Carolyn Hart: Oklahoma‟s Agatha Christie By Amy Dee Stephens These days, Agatha Christie is sharing a bookshelf with Oklahoma author, Carolyn Hart. Twice a year, Hart churns out a new, best-selling murder mystery. To her millions of readers, it’s no mystery why she’s so popular… Hart‟s books always have “intricate plot, appealing characters with rich emotional lives, non-stop action and a gripping climax,” said Mary Kennedy with Crime Fiction Examiner. Book reviewers from Publisher’s Weekly to The New York Times agree, calling Hart‟s writing “masterful” and “fabulous.” “I do try to hide excellent clues in my book,” Hart said. “At the end of the book, I hope readers either think “I was right!” or “Of course.” Hart uses human emotions to drive her storyline, stating that murders are about fractured relationships. To reach a believable murder outcome, she must ask the question: “What causes an ordinary person to succumb to this weakness or anger that then leads them astray?” She often finds the answer by picking up the morning newspaper. “Human passions are the same in a small village or a city alley,” Hart said. “The point is not who committed the crime, but why.” For this reason, she believes that mystery novels are an important part of our culture and actually reaffirm goodness. “Mysteries lift the human spirit, because readers care that justice is served and decency is applauded,” Hart said. What caused this petite, green-eyed girl from Oklahoma City to choose a life of crime writing? It goes back to her childhood… Hart grew up on a steady diet of reading.
