SCNA’S WEST L.A. FIESTA PARTY LIVES UP TO ITS NAME Saturday, May 11 – The theme for our party each May is Viva Fiesta, and members certainly rose to the occasion this year with some amazing Mexican dishes for us to enjoy. The pot luck included some excellent homemade dishes, from enchiladas and chili relleno to tacos to fruit salad, it was all good! I give a special mention to Melanie, who cooked up a potato salad that had a special delayed kick to it. The brownies, apple pie, and turnovers completed the feast. Thanks to all who contributed. And let us not forget the sunshine! May is notorious for gray skies over LA but not this day. The sky was clear and bright, and many spent the afternoon laying out on the lawn working on their new tans. Mike brought out his "Catch Phrase" game, and Rolf brought his “Cards Against Humanity,” another favorite. Afterwards, Akila brought out her homemade sheet cakes so the club could celebrate the birthdays of both Tim and Ricc. Visiting the party were Melanie and Nathan, a couple of NEW MEET-UP LOCATION journalism students from CSUN who interviewed members for a school project. They said they were quite impressed with the OPENS IN CARPINTERIA number of people who came (nearly 3 dozen) as well Beginning June 18, and every third Tuesday of the month thereafter, SCNA is expanding north with a new monthly dinner meeting in Carpinteria for its Friends of Bates Beach (FOBB) division. This new location is the Best Western Carpinteria Inn at 4558 Carpinteria Ave, Carpinteria 93013, about a quarter-mile west of Linden Ave. on the north side of the street adjacent to the 101 Freeway. Directions may be found on page 7. FOBB will host the dinner meeting starting at 6:45PM to about 8:30PM. The meeting is in a second floor meeting area (just to the right of the elevators) with a huge picture window overlooking the atrium gardens below. The hotel serves “restaurant-style” meals ($10-$15), but sandwiches, salads, and appetizers in the $6-9 range are also available. While all Meetup meetings serve as a great introduction to those curious about , this Carpinteria meeting will mostly focus on the status of nude recreation in Santa Barbara county and protecting the existing beaches there. Even though the ordinance allowed nudity during the race, I heard many nudists were hesitant to join in. From what I observed, there were perhaps 750 naked runners this year – most of them men – instead of the usual 2,000. It seemed to me that many women just stayed away, which is too bad because it was a fun day to run with warm temperatures and sun all the way. SCNA Newsletter for June 2013 Page 5 of 12 HOORAY FOR ST. FRANCIS: PATRON SAINT OF NUDISTS! Many of us watched the unfolding of the Papal election. I know of no one who would have related that story to naturism except Richard Mason, President of South Florida Free Beaches. On April 14, the following letter-to-the-editor appeared in the Miami Herald: “Naturists and nudists of the world are rejoicing in the selection of the name Francis by Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio for his term as Pope. He selected the name in honor of Saint Francis Di Assisi, a person who believed his mission from Jesus was to be an example of sharing their wealth with the poor. Francis Di Assisi demonstrated this mission to the extreme by giving away his clothing and walking the streets of Assisi nude. “While current day naturists and nudists do not advocate walking the streets nude, they do point out that the mere nudity that Francis of Assisi practiced was not a criminal or irreligious act, and it could not have offended God or ADVERTISE IN THIS SCNA Jesus or the Roman Catholic Church of its day. Saturday, June 22-23, Meet at 10:30 AM NUDE HIKE/CAMPING TRIP TO DEEP CREEK Location: Bowen Ranch, San Bernardino Mountains Gate Fee: $5 /Person Per Day, Plus $10 If Staying Overnight SCNA is joining the Camping Bares and NitOC in a joint event at Deep Creek hot springs. You are responsible for your own camping equipment, food and drink to pack in (and to pack out any leftovers!). You may go for Saturday only, or stay overnight along with perhaps 20 other nudists (the number we usually average on these trips). There is no tenting allowed near the springs. We hike in at around 10:30 AM Saturday and set up tent camping next to our cars overnight that evening after a great day at the springs. This makes it easy for day visitors to join the campers. Pay at the Bowen Ranch entrance, exact change in envelope with license number if no one is there to collect your fees. Note: The 5-mi dirt road from the gate to the parking lot is in poor condition. It is our opinion that no long RV's can make it down to the parking lot, and even short ones would probably have difficulty. A truck or pickup with a camper on it would be fine; a 4-wheel drive is better. RSVP early to (818) 225-2273 so we can get a head count and arrange for car-pooling.

Because we provide a safe, family-friendly environment at our activities, SCNA reserves the right to screen any or all non-member guests through the Megan's Law national database before the event.

HOW TO RSVP AND PAY FOR SCNA PARTIES AND ACTIVITIES Payments by cash or check are accepted, but we prefer members pay by credit card through our on-line PayPal (you don’t need a Pay Pal account yourself to use ours). We accept MasterCard, VISA, Discover, and American Express. Party cancellations are also accepted no later than 48 hours before the start of the event because that is when we buy the party supplies and food. No Refunds are given after that deadline. Thank you for understanding. To encourage payment in advance, we have instituted a $5 surcharge for people who reserve during the last 48 hours because in the past too many people RSVP without paying and then just don’t show up after we buy the party supplies.
