Gene Expression Data Support the Hypothesis That Isoetes Rootlets Are True Roots and Not Modifed Leaves Alexander J
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Gene expression data support the hypothesis that Isoetes rootlets are true roots and not modifed leaves Alexander J. Hetherington1,2, David M. Emms1, Steven Kelly1 & Liam Dolan1,3* Rhizomorphic lycopsids are the land plant group that includes the frst giant trees to grow on Earth and extant species in the genus Isoetes. Two mutually exclusive hypotheses account for the evolution of terminal rooting axes called rootlets among the rhizomorphic lycopsids. One hypothesis states that rootlets are true roots, like roots in other lycopsids. The other states that rootlets are modifed leaves. Here we test predictions of each hypothesis by investigating gene expression in the leaves and rootlets of Isoetes echinospora. We assembled the de novo transcriptome of axenically cultured I. echinospora. Gene expression signatures of I. echinospora rootlets and leaves were diferent. Furthermore, gene expression signatures of I. echinospora rootlets were similar to gene expression signatures of true roots of Selaginella moellendorfi and Arabidopsis thaliana. RSL genes which positively regulate cell diferentiation in roots were either exclusively or preferentially expressed in the I. echinospora rootlets, S. moellendorfi roots and A. thaliana roots compared to the leaves of each respective species. Taken together, gene expression data from the de-novo transcriptome of I. echinospora are consistent with the hypothesis that Isoetes rootlets are true roots and not modifed leaves. Te frst giant (> 50 m) trees to grow on Earth, the arborescent clubmosses, were tethered to the ground by rooting structures termed stigmarian systems whose homology has been debated for more than 150 years1–9. Stigmarian rooting systems consisted of two components, a central axis (rhizomorph) on which developed large numbers of fne axes (rootlets). -

Journal of Palaeogeography (2019) 8:1 https://doi.org/10.1186/s42501-018-0018-y Journal of Palaeogeography RESEARCH Open Access The Jurassic fossil wood diversity from western Liaoning, NE China Zi-Kun Jiang1,2, Yong-Dong Wang2,3*, Ning Tian4,5, Ao-Wei Xie2,6, Wu Zhang7, Li-Qin Li2 and Min Huang1 Abstract Western Liaoning is a unique region in China that bears diverse types of Jurassic plants, including leaves, fern rhizomes, and wood, providing significant proxy for vegetation and palaeoenvironment reconstruction of the well-known Yanliao Flora in East Asia. In particular, the silicified wood is very abundant in the fossil Lagerstätte of the Jurassic Tiaojishan Formation in Beipiao, western Liaoning. Previous and recent systematic investigations documented a high diversity of the Jurassic wood assemblages. These assemblages are dominated by conifers, followed by cycads and ginkgoaleans. In total, about 30 species belonging to 21 genera of fossil wood have been recorded so far, which are represented by Cycadopsida, Ginkgopsida, Coniferopsida, and Gymnospermae incertae sedis. The evolutionary implications of several distinctive fossil wood taxa as well as palaeoclimate implications are summarized based on their anatomical structures and growth ring patterns. This work approaches the vegetation development and evolutionary significances of the wood taxa and their relatives, and provides clues for the further understanding of the diversity of the Jurassic Yanliao Flora in East Asia. Allen Department o f Earth Sciences, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia B3H 3J5, Canada The Mabou Group, attaining a maximum thickness of7620 stituents of the lower Mabou Group. The types of carbonate m, lies conformably above the marine Windsor Group and rocks present include laminated lime boundstones (stromato unconformably below the fluviatile Cumberland Group. It com lites), floatstones, and grainstones. The stromatolites occur pre prises a lower grey lacustrine facies and an upper red fluviatile dominantly as planar laminated stratiform types and as later facies. The grey lacustrine facies consists predominantly of grey ally linked hemispheroids, some having a third order crenate siltstones and shales with interbedded sandstones, gypsum, and microstructure. -

APPENDIX B HYDROGEOLOGIC AND SOILS FACTORS INFLUENCING LEAKAGE POTENTIAL FROM THE CONCHAS-HUDSON CANAL SYSTEM, ARCH HURLEY CONSERVANCY DISTRICT, QUAY AND SAN MIGUEL COUNTIES, NEW MEXICO by John W. Kennedy, GIS Specialist/Hydrogeologist New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute October 2005 INTRODUCTION The following discussion of geology and soils in the Arch Hurley Conservancy District (District) study area introduces the major landscape features (landforms) and surficial geologic units of the Conchas-Hudson Canal system between Conchas Reservoir in San Miguel County and the eastern part of the Tucumcari (irrigation) Project in Quay County. Emphasis is on hydrogeologic and soils factors that influence leakage from not only the canal corridor but also the complex network of laterals, ditches and field- drainage features that characterize irrigated parts of the District. Of particular importance is the historic role played by Project operations (since 1946) in recharge of the shallow- alluvial and bedrock (Entrada Sandstone) aquifer systems of the Tucumcari Metropolitan area. The latter topic was first addressed in detail by Trauger and Bushman (1964) and is only briefly covered here. 112 The geologic setting of the entire study area is the subject of a recent comprehensive review paper that was written specifically for a general audience by Adrian Hunt (Director, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science; 1998). Hydrogeologic characteristics of major stratigraphic units exposed or shallowly buried along the canal corridor are summarized in Table B1, which also includes a list of supporting references. Distribution patterns and leakage potential of surficial-geologic units and soils are summarized in Tables B2-B5 in Attachment B1 to this Appendix. -

Log-probability curves of the grain-size distributions when compared to the work of Visher (1969) indicate environments ranging from distributary channels to marine wave deposits. The Mesa Rica delta prograded into the marine Tucumcari Basin from the north as shown by the south-trending to southwest-trending paleocurrent directions, and the decrease in mean grain size and thickness to the southeast, south, and southwest (lobate geometry). Also, a decrease in percent cross stratification to the southeast, south, and southwest (accompanied by an increase in percent bioturbation and burrowing) indicates a transition from predominantly fluvial to predominantly marine conditions. If the Mesa Rica Sandstone is correlative with the lower fluvial interval of the Dakota Sandstone north and northwest of the Tucumcari Basin as suggested by Scott (1970), then the Dakota Sandstone represents the fluvial facies of the Mesa Rica marine delta complex. -

Since Nielsen's records began in 1998, Pratchett has sold around 10 million books in the UK, generating more than £70 million in revenue. His agent and original publisher, Colin Smythe says Pratchett has either written, co-written or been creatively associated with 100-plus books, notably Discworld titles, Despite this prodigious output, Pratchett is one of the UK’s most collectable authors, particularly for his early books and special editions. Pratchett‘s first book, The Carpet People, was published in 1971, while his first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, appeared in 1983. 36 more Discworld books have followed, many of which have topped the UK hardback and paperback lists. Pratchett's novels have sold more than 60 million copies and have been translated into 33 languages Until Pratchett’s recent diagnosis of an early stage of a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease, he usually wrote two books a year, which reputedly earned him £1 million each. When asked “What do you love most about your job? “ Pratchett replied “Well, I get paid shitloads of cash...which is good”. Pratchett donated £500,000 towards Alzheimer’s research in March 2008. Pratchett anticipates dictating novels from 2009 onwards due to his illness. He recently told the BBC, that compared to his once rapid typing, that he now types “badly - if it wasn’t for my loss of typing ability, I might doubt the fact that I have Alzheimer’s. -
