212 WOMEN’S Gymnastics NATIONAL COLLEGIATE 2002 Championships Highlights Alabama proved unstoppable on its home floor. The Crimson Tide edged rival Georgia for its fourth overall title and third when hosting the championships. Despite a last-minute injury to Raegan Tomasek, Alabama rose to the challenge behind a domi- nating Andree’ Pickens, who posted three 9.95 scores on the night. Meanwhile, Cory Fritzinger rallied Georgia to its second consecutive runner-up finish. UCLA’s Jamie Dantzscher won the all-around title and then claimed the vault and floor events. Pickens grabbed second in the all-around and first in the uneven bars. Elise Ray won the beam title for Michigan. NATIONAL COLLEGIATE WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2015 Championship 2 History 4 Brackets 17 2015 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Florida’s McMurtry finishes off triumphant title victory: Alex McMurtry is the youngest member of the Florida gymnastics team. Maybe the 18-year-old isn’t old enough to feel pressure. Maybe she didn’t know she should. On the final rotation Saturday night -- the uneven bars -- Florida needed a 9.95 or better to win its third consecutive NCAA gymnastics title. All McMurtry did was execute her best routine of the season, earning a career-best 9.95 to propel the Gators a final score of 197.850 and the national championship. “I didn’t necessarily know what score I had to get,” McMurtey said. “I think that would have made it even harder for me so I knew I had a job to do and I knew my teammates had my back. Going last is sometimes a good position, sometimes a bad position, and we had five girls hit routines so I knew my teammates had my back and I just had to do my job. It all worked out for me and that was one of the best routines of my career.” “It’s amazing that she came out under this heavy pressure situation as a freshman and performed as well as she did everywhere,” Florida head coach Rhonda Faehn said.“To anchor that bar lineup, to have that fight for every little thing, it’s not only amazing, it speaks volumes for what she will continue to bring to this team in the future, which is exciting.” Faehn had her back to the scoreboard and paid no attention to the other teams competing.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championship 2 History 4 Brackets 17 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Oklahoma Wins Second NCAA Title: The motto for the Oklahoma women’s gymnastics squad this year was to make it count. On Saturday night, the Sooners did just that. With a 197.6750, the No. 1-seeded Sooners secured the 2016 NCAA Championship inside Fort Worth Convention Center. The title was their second all-time, with the first coming in 2014. The Super Six appearance was OU’s sixth in the last seven seasons and in each of those, OU has now finished within the top three nationally. The victory made history in the gymnastics world as Oklahoma became the first school in history to win both the women’s and men’s national titles in the same season. Earlier on Saturday night, the men’s team rolled to the 2016 crown in Columbus, Ohio. “What do you say? One of girls this morning, when she woke up, tweeted, ‘It felt like Christmas Eve last night—I couldn’t go to bed anticipating today,’ It turns out that’s exactly what it was,” 10th-year Oklahoma head coach K.J. Kindler said. “Christmas Day is always a wonderful day when you’re a kid. Today was just an amazing and wonderful day for these ladies and our entire team. They had to fight for it. We learned a lot last year, I think, and they applied it today.” No. 3 seed LSU came in second place with a 197.4500, No. 4 Alabama (197.4375) finished third and No.

WORLD ACROBATICS SOCIETY The World Acrobatics Society Legends The World Acrobatics Society inducted its class of 2012 Gallery of Legends on September 20 at the Circus Circus Casino and Resort in Las Vegas during the WAS Congress. The Legends are elected annually in eight acrobatics categories or disciplines. The WAS has been making inductions since its first class in the year 2000. Standing from left to right are: Kelli Hill, Lifetime achievement; Gary Smith, Trampoline & Tumbling; Jennifer Chandler, Diving; Jon Culbertson, Lifetime Achievement; Megan Neyer, Diving; Jack Miles, Artistic Gymnastics; Stoyan Deltchev, Artistic Gymnastics; Tory Sharpe representing his deceased father David Sharpe, Professional Performer; Matt Chojnacki, 2006 WAS Legend; and Linda Peterson representing Linda’s deceased son Jeret “Speedy” Peterson, Extreme Sports. Each Legend was introduced and eulogized by Master of Ceremonies Dick Albershardt, a 2003 WAS legend. Additionally, each Legend was presented in video that highlighted various accomplishments of their careers in acrobatic disciplines. Legends of earlier WAS classes stepped forward to hang a WAS medallion on each of the 2012 Legends. It was a memorable evening with good food, fun, and an opportunity to hear each Legend speak about their career in an acrobatic sport or discipline. Written by: Bruce Davis Page 1 of 11 Edited by: Don Leas World Acrobatics Society 2012 Winter Newsletter The World Acrobatics Society Program Day Presentations George Hery made a video presentation called “Acrobatics now and then.” Using videos spanning over many years, George pointed out how acrobats in the sports of artistic gymnastics, trampoline, and tumbling have improved their skills in their respective sports activity due to coaching, equipment improvement, and knowledge of performance.
